If you are unemployed, or need extra cash... Etsy, Ebay, anything that you can self manage & self promote are great ways to make a good income!

I have purchased a number of items from Etsy sellers and have been very happy with them!

Etsy can be great when you find a good vendor, but I've gotten some real junk from a couple of their "artists." You take your chances with a site like that, with independent dealers! Buyer beware.

Etsy is a terrific idea in principle, and frequently in action as well. A couple "howevers":

When I first learned of Etsy a couple years ago it initially occurred to me as a possible place to sell custom electronics--I'm talking hand-designed, handmade things in very limited or one-off quantities. However, given the general nature of what's sold there and the clientele the site no doubt attracts, it's unlikely to be a viable venue, even if what I would be selling would be acceptable per site guidelines. Just something to keep in mind if you're considering selling things there.

Any potential buyer should also research the conduct and attitude the seller exhibits on-site, such as their store policy. In particular, carefully peruse the feedback page, keeping in mind that any comments are available for anyone in the world who cares to see, and take special note when things go negative. When I first visited the site, in just a couple hours I was able to dredge up all manner of foul conduct and petulant tirades from sellers in the feedback pages as well as the discussion forums. Think about how you the buyer, a private individual, want to be treated in a place where a permanent public record will be kept, and choose your sellers accordingly.(Of course this applies to ebay and any other site that works the same way.)

So some of you have used this as a way to promote yourselves. That's one way to make sure I won't buy from you.

I love the jerky woman who says she " values" her time, but anyone who doesn't have a job (read: whose time has no value) might want to bid on work. Since her time is so valuable, there is no reason to make demands upon it by ordering something...right?

I've gotten to know a few nice Etsy folks, but there are some true jerks on there, as there are everywhere...

I don't want to shamelessly promote my shop here, but I, too, am a local Etsy seller!

I LOVE Etsy. I have done most of my shopping on Etsy this year, and I have gotten some really great, hand-made items.

Thanks for running this article, Sentinel!

Why pay the ridiculous rents downtown when you can retail for so much less online?

Just so everyone knows, the Etsy seller that I mentioned in an earlier post has no idea that I posted her Etsy link. I posted her link not only for her benefit, but also because it may benefit potential shoppers who are interested in her kind of work. So I hope that no one jumped to a conclusion and thought that she used this forum as a way to promote herself. The article lists only a tiny few local Etsy artists -- there's nothing wrong with writing on the forum to include the artists who were left out.
Just my opinion

This is meaningless BS. Has anyone noticed that almost all Sentinel opinion pieces and anything else possibly controversial has been switched from Topix to some sort of Facebook connection where the poster has to identify themself. So bye bye any chance of insider exposure of corruption. Today's newspapers are too understaffed for investigative reporting, and now any chance of private exposure has been cut off. So sit back and enjoy reading Pravda, your state-provided press.

Wow. This was my first comment on a Sentinel article & I didn't really think it would hurt anyone to share my Etsy story real quick in the comments. Why NOT include a link to my store.

You might want to bid on a life.
