It is a really nice store, but I the prices are pretty steep for me. I go just to find a special gift now and then...I wonder if the kid's shop with be too pricey for me as well?

Prices of items are always the deal breaker. Choose the right price point and merchandise will fly out the door. Let's hope that happens.

I agree with you about Outside-In's prices. Perhaps their kitchen store would have done better had prices been reasonable. Aptos is not La Jolla, after all.
I will not shop at their kids' store, either. I'll go to Hopscotch since it has such a stellar reputation. People know children's clothing from Hopscotch costs a fortune! However, it is unique and high-quality.
Outside-In is, unfortunately, a tourist destination in my opinion.

Everyone has a kitchen, but not everyone has a kid... if the kitchen store didn't do well, then I think a high-end kids' store may struggle too. I like Outside-In and appreciate its unique selection and quality. I don't purchase there often, but once in awhile for gifts.

As for shopping locally owned Aptos shops, I support many merchants, but some of you need to help out the customer. Aptos Clothing: don't be afraid to discount your fall clothing - the stuff that has been marked down months before in other locally owned shops or in the major department stores.

Outside In is a great store but the last two times I went to the kitchen store for something I needed on a Saturday afternoon, they weren't open. So I don't even try them anymore. I head downtown to Chefworks if I need something. I know as a small business owner you want some flexibility, but realize that it comes with a cost.

I visited this store a couple of times. The prices were high in comparison. I wish them well but I hope they don't end up upside down instead of inside out.

These comments are quite surpising. We have a local store trying to make a change and adapt, yet these commments are negative and somewhat critical.

If you want local stores with high quality products then quit complaining about prices.

The below comments will only keep our economy in a recession...wake up people, shop local and be supportive.

people with no kids are losers

more social pressure to breed is needed-maybe a law-you must have at least 3 kids..........

and judge by the size of the brood too-

more the better..........

n yer selfish if you dont sponser a kid out of the 15 kid broods round the world.

Their markup IS too high......go to other local boutiques in our county and look at their prices...they will always be lower than Outside In....they buy very well and they buy a lot...the store is pretty but I won't support someone who charges too much....It's almost as if this article is saying that people are not buying as many candles and such from them so they decided to stock up on kid's things because people need them? That's their answer to the recession? Those prices will be inflated as well....so it's the same rip-off business model, applied to something that people really need...

Someone also mentioned La Jolla....La Jolla is in a very sad state right now...Aptos is sitting pretty (economically speaking) compared to it.

Aptos IS known as an upscale community to a lot of people I've found, but it would be nice if the stores tried to keep it more down to earth...I make it a point to shop local and hate to have to go shopping elsewhere, but I will because I won't spend money when I know I'm going to get ripped off.

Outside In is soooooo over priced. I found the exact same watch at BOE (Best of Everything) for $15.00 less. Is it just greed on the owners part? Not a neighborhood friendly store, just for the wealthy who have money to burn.

Aptos Shoes and Apparel has beautiful clothing, but I cannot afford most of them. I treat myself once in a while for a special event. Other than that, no way. I do buy my shoes there every so many years ( cuz they last that long ). Their Labor Day sale rocks.

BOE? I'll have to check that out. BTW I did find a great deal on a soy milk maker at Le Chef in Aptos.

It's hardly in the "San Francisco Bay Area." Aptos is in the Monterey Bay Area!
