what an idiot this lady was and a very bad driver-going through Soquel Village at a slow speed like she should of been doing, might of helped her see this man in the crosswalk. She should be charged. she took away someone's father, son, etc so sensely, and even if he did have a drink, he shouldnt be made to be at fault..Stupid..

you know, sometimes accidents are just accidents and the best thing is to give your condolences and let it go. Blame doesn't always factor into a situation. My sympathies to both families.

There should be blinking crosswalk warnings like other cities have.

If I am not mistaken, this is the same intersection or area on Soquel where the woman who left the oncologist's office was killed after she found out she cleared cancer. When is Santa Cruz County/City going to do anything with the traffic, deteriorating roadways and lack of bicycle lanes?
You are close---that lady was hit in the next crosswalk over...about 100 yards away...People haul down that stretch of road...just try and cross the street from the post office to the Bagelry in the morning and folks will speed by and pretend they dont see you. CHP, why dont you put a motor cop right there once in a while? You'll rack up the tickets!!

CHP in the past has worked this particular part of Soquel and for the very reason of citing people who don't stop for pedestrians. CHP should beable to write up a report and give it to the County that points out the problem spots and if someone dies after they've been told then maybe the County should be held responsible. But as of today, it's still a dangerous area and those crosswalks have not been improved. There has been nasty injuries in the past at these locations and you'd think that would raise a red flag? Sometimes I think there has to be a "body quota" before the county takes preventitive measures.

Good place for a cardboard cut-out on a skateboard, pulled slowly across the street. Maybe one with a bucket of paint in one hand.

It's a shame that you can't even cross the street especially in a crosswalk. I thought there was law regarding cars driving through a crosswalk when a pedestrian is in it. I stopped for a young girl today in a crosswalk and the car coming up in the other lane blazed right through. If the girl hadn't been paying attention I'm afraid she would be with Gary right now.

That crosswalk in Soquel village is extremely dangerous. It's a terrible thing that Mr. Flood has to lose his life to prove the point. Maybe now the powers-that-be will finally put in a signal. My sincerest condolences to the Flood family.

Try crossing Seabright by Linda's or Day's. Watch the valleys go flying by without even slowing down. Kooks everywhere.

Then there's the most well marked crossing in the city by 24 hour fitness on soquel av- step off the curb and slowly walk and usually 4-5 cars go by before anybody stops, on a good day.

And what's up with the "yield to pedestrians its the law" signs only up on Mission? I understand it's because of the caltrans/highway thing but why not approve these for the rest of the city/county?

I spent alot of time in 1993 to 1998 at the Star of Siam where Gary Flood created amazing sushi. We became friends and then he moved away and I moved down the hill (silicon Valley). Over the years I've often thought about Gary, his laugh, his handgrenades (some of you may have been lucky enough to taste one of those). I was incredibly sad today to learn of his death. I remember the love he had for his daughter Maddie. Gary was a really nice and fun guy. Shame on the Sentinel for slanting the story to look like Gary had too much to drink. He never did in all the time I knew him or was around him. He was visiting old friends at Sir Froggie's. He's probably crossed that street a million times. How does someone not see a guy the size of Gary at 6pm during summer daylight hours while walking through a CROSSWALK ??? unbelievable.

Shame on you Sentinel...your article, introducing speculation about how much Mr. Flood had to drink moments before he was killed, takes away from the fact that a man's life has prematurely ended... interviewing the daughter about her father's drinking habits while she is in mourning...dispictable. Come on Sentinel writers, you can do better than tabloid reporting, can't you?

We have a problem where I live with fast/drunk driving. When I went to the CHP to request a history of accidents that happened on our street over the past 10 years, they refused to produce. Turns out, even in the age of computers, they cannot and WILL not correlate accidents at a give road section based upon incidents. That is, they rely sole on either local outrage or personal recollection's to take action. This is so totally outrageous. I'm told by the county that this posture is simply fear of litigation. That is, if they collected the statistics that allowed them to clearly identify locations where accidents frequently happen, the county/state would be more liable for accidents than if they continue to ignore it. F*them. People haul a** on side streets because the the SC county won't deal with traffic issues. The highway 1 work was unilaterally done by the state, without local approval. This whole mess really makes me mad. Good guy dead - Everyone (state/local) wa*nks and the F's that stand in the way of improving local traffic flow have a death on their hands. They would love to blame it on a "drunk black man". eff*U.

Gary was a good man, friend and father, and was at Sir Froggies to have a drink with Rodger Loucks, whom had passed in October, upon learning this, he had 1 drink with "Bogie's" father and then headed to see daughter. He was not intoxicated, and was not at fault. There should be an apology issued to his family. His services will be held Saturday 8/2 at 11:00am. Rest in peace "Sushi Gary"
