Any opinions on which is the best Mexican food restaurant in Corpus? I'm looking for a varied menu with some good quality margaritas. I'm going to list a few with my opinion. Could anybody add to the list or let me know if there's somewhere to try that I haven't yet? No taquerias without margaritas, btw I guess what I'm looking for, if you have been to Houston, is something the quality of the original Ninfa's on Navigation (not any of the chain versions). You pay around $20 for a plate of carnitas and around $40 for a pitcher of margaritas, but they are some damn fine carnitas and margaritas.
Los Comales (in Rockport, but I'll drive out of town for that one): Food is always tasty, salsas are hit and miss but mostly hit. Margaritas are strong and tasty.
Dos Comales (downtown): Hit and miss...mostly miss. I yelled at the manager one day because I had been there a couple of times in a row and they didn't have frozen margaritas, and the margarita on the rocks they served me was mostly sour mix. They told me they weren't going to get the machine fixed until tourist season. I got mad because I told them that locals would appreciate a frozen margarita, too.
Kiko's: wtf If I didn't have a friend who always gets seated ahead of the line, I would never eat at that place. It's mediocre Tex-Mex. Definitely nothing special.
La Playa: Pretty good. Food is tasty, salsas are usually good, margaritas could be better.
Sr. Jaime's: Just ok, and margaritas definitely no big deal. But...have only been there once. Let me know if it's worth another try.
Tequila Coast: only went there once for lunch and didn't have a margarita, so the jury is still out on that one. Don't remember what I ate.
Cancun: only have been there twice for lunch without having a margarita, so can't judge the drinks. First time I went, I really liked it (had fish tacos) and went again today and found it quite mediocre. Salsa was watery, enchiladas were those peculiar cheese enchiladas with that cheese whiz-looking cheese instead of cheddar, Carne guisada was pretty good, though.
That place on the corner of Williams and Staples: have tried it a couple of times. First time, the food was good and I don't remember the margarita quality. Second time, had mole and I don't think it was homemade. But...place seems very clean and the kitchen looks like they have their act together
Pepito's in Portland : pretty good. Nothing special
Pepito's in Aransas Pass: SUCKS!!!!! Their red salsa tasted like they put oregano in it, and their nachos are those fried flour tortilla kind, which I think is stupid.
