I remember the Barq's ads ,, I was born in 86 though ,,, I posted earlier on this thread but like I said then ,, the sound of Walter Furley's voice on TV still makes me think it is lunch time in the summer and we have all just gotten in from the beach ,,,, yes ,, he was on KZTV but I swear I can also remember it as KSIX .. when did that come about ??

Dutchess; KSIX was also a local radio station that was the parent owner of channel 10. Channel 6 KRIS signed on in early 1956 and Channel 10 followed in fall 1956. At that time there wer 3 TV stations in Corpus 6,10, and KVDO 22. Stiff competion drove 22 off the air in 1957. You couldnt compete with Howdy Doody and DisneyLand.

I remember rushing home from elementary school and my Dad proudly showing us howdy doody that afternoon. Previously prior to watching local stations in CC we watched distant San Antonio stations WOAI 4 and KENS 5 from an antenna hooked to a tall tall pipe into the air. We had a motorized antenna that swiveled to pick up distant signals. If the weather was just right we watched clear signals from SA and Houston. Lots of snow.

KSIX did not use the call letters KZTV until maybe 6 months to a year after sign on due to the confusion with Channel 6.

Lots of good programming on 6 and 10 on saturday mornings. Westerns, Ski King, Fury, old westerns from 30's and 40's, roy Rogers, Gene Autry, also cartoons Heckle and Jeckel which is not politically correct today, and Mighty Mouse playhouse. And who could forget The Lone Ranger.

Also Captain Galliant of the Foreign Legion starring Buster Crabbe. KZTV also ran robin hood which was filmed in England, very impressive production

I grew up watching serials such as Rocketmen and TV news with John Cameron Swaze and CBS news with Douglas Edwards and every afternood Sargent Preston of the Youkon and his dog King.

Local Childrens shows were great. We appeared on the shows and won prizes and watched the cartoon with the host in the studios

KVDO had Captain Video and a Cowboy show and I dont remember the name of the cowboy but he made person appearances locally when a supermarket had a grand Opening. We never called them supermarkedts just Grocery stores.

It was great to grow up in the 50's.
The enemy was the Soviet Union and we ran through the neighborhoods at night catching fireflies in jars and looking to the skies to see Flying Saucers. Nobody locked their doors and summertime was swimmingtimg at the downtown Y or at Cudday park.

There were 4 Dept stores Fedway, Litchsteins, Pennys and Sears and we had a Woolworths.

The Centre and Ritz theater were downtown and Every saturday afternoon we caught the bus and rode downtown for 5 cents. the Six points area had the Ayers theatre.

I lived on the poor side of town western side and thought that six points area was the rich part.
I could write a book about my exoeriences and would call it the Age of Innocance.

Please forgive the spelling errors
PS if you wish to see snippets of early TV shows you can go to You Tube and search

Well , I guess I imagined remembering the KSIX and I am only a little behind you , but not much ,, the stories you tell make me so homesick , and miss my parents too lol ( they are both gone , well one is dead but mom is in advanced Alzheimers and I may as well be the Queen )

I always remember Walter Furley talking about all the stores on Ayers and Six Points and Leopard too ..it seemed as if everything was on Ayers ,, now I lock my door when I go down there.. I grew up in P.A. so it was always a treat to go into Corpus .. I remember in the Seventies ( early) listening to KSAT in San Antonio for Rock ...

I have something for you ,it has been in my you tube favorites for awhile ,, it is early 70's but still ,, it reminds me of (again) coming in from the beach in the evening or coming back in after fishing all day when the weather was warm .. getting ready for bed for school ..and everything was OK ..

I wonder do they still have the
Buccaneer Parade
the famous butter crust bakery in the six points area. We use to take rides with Mom and Dad and watch the men in white uniforms through the lg. windows baking bread and the SMELL was great.
Early tv stations televised jr. high football games on saturday mornings and the game betwee RAY and ME LLER (Miller) was televised.
I grew up on west side and went to Oak Park elem and Driscoll jr. High

I went back to CC in 2005 and it is bad. lots of trash etc. I started surfing and came across a forum called Why I hate Corpus christi. It reflects what i saw Goolee it I dont know how to copy and paste.

We always attended the naval air Show and i have picture of me setting in a Blue angel airplane at 6 years old. I can remember 3 jets crashing in midairout on the west side and watching a parachute w/o anyone in it drifting down slowly, I still remember that.

CC has always remained special to me but after seeing it in 2005 I wont go back. It is backwater now

please forgive spelling and syntax.

I cannot view youtube at work but will view at home and tell you what I think.

Talking about KSAT back in the 1980s i met a DJ from KSAT and we did some business together. DO you remember KSAT in the Summer had a pool party radio show. They palyed all the hits from the 50's while you heard pool chatter in the background. You may be too young to remember.

I told him how great it was to imagine a pool party and DJ and he laffed. the pool party was all canned and played as the backdrop to his pool party DJ program. I was so dissapointed to hear this.

EWe moving to houston we had KILT and believe it or not NO FM stations

I know what you mean ,, the topic of these forums is usually the same,, it is NOT the Corpus of our childhoods ,, neither yours nor mine . I am away right now for work for a year in Waco ( the dump) but it is hard to see it sometimes remembering how it was . I am happiest in Port A but the tourists and the winter people have made it nearly too expensive to live there . I couldnt dream of living in the home I grew up in ...
Yes they still have a buc days parade and the bakery is on Ayers , It looks closed but I cant tell . I have been privelidged to live all over the world for work but I always miss Corpus .

LOL the pool party thing sounds great !! I didnt hear it but I can imagine .. it reminds me of being at the Jack Tar motel in Galveston . They had this wicked swimming pool in the 60's with music and food and stuff for the guests ...

I look out the window to a bad part of Waco and I am ready to come home now ....

Wacky Waco when I attended A&M we Corps members made it a point to hastle the citozens of Waco wwhen we attended the games, I agree CC was great back in the 50s. 60s and 70s but now I dont think
it is so great. Like Dorthy in the Wizard of OZ, you never can go home.

Dutchess I hope all goes well with you in Waco (deep in the heart of Texas) If you have time go to the Dr. Pepper plant close by and vist the bottling plant. this is the only plant that still makes DP using pure cane sugar and not corn sugar and you can immediately tell the difference.

They still sell them in the glass bottles. you might find it on the shelves in your local store.

I think that KIIITV is probably the best of the three. Sure, it has some shortcomings, but compared to the other two, it is still a good option. They are community-oreinted, which the others aren't. However, I would like to see more Hispanic anchors, especially in the morning show. They used to have Regina there, but for some unknown reason, removed her. The other stations have no Hispanic anchors and that is really unexplainable at that time slot. I would like to see Katia paired with someone who is not too stuck up with his self-image and ego. Katia works very well on her own. Joe Gazin is too stuck up with his perceived self-importance.

U have got to be kidding! Uriarte thinks she is the cutest thing on the air and R. Garcia giggles her way thru the morning segment. The new girl Sabrina Hall gets stuck doing the so caled "feature" stories and the thinnly veiled commercials. I may have to change my worst station vote from FOX to KIII. Oh wait! There is another Time Warner conflict somewhere around the corner. Waa! Waa! from Dick Drilling.
I have to say Sabrina does a lot better job in the mornings than katy kiser. I would like to recommend that kiser take some reading classes or something, the poor thing has a lot of trouble reading the news. I do wish, they would bring Regina back to the morning show.

I now live in Houston and remember things about Corpus Christi......like how bad KZTV was with Walter Furley and Gean Looper, Christy White.....I recall The Domingo Pena Show and how he was often late to do the show.....Lilli Vela on KIII.....Charlie St John being drunk on the air.....Paul York car commercials.....Gean Looper doing live man on the street interviews and having trouble getting people to talk to him on the radio.....Joe Gazin screwing up not wanting to talk to an eyewitness that was inside the motel when Selena was killed, did he ever lived that down.....those were the days.

This truly proves that illiteracy is alive and well in Corpus Christi.

WTF is this supposed to mean anyway? Can I please get a translation?
