Just wonder if Corning will recover from all that's happening this year. Or will it only get worse?

Best option for mayor and coucil?

Like many small towns, Corning has lost its children. Now, people can debate why that is, but they are gone and it appears they are not coming back. This is the reality that the mayor and council face. If I had to give the city gov't directions to get to recovery, I would have to say you cannot get there from here.

Certainly not Rob again and Ray and Terry need to go. Mayor is responsible to manage his budget, but council is equally responsible to review each months expenditures to keep him checked. Council approved it. All 5 are responsible for keeping the budget balanced. No excuses.

I think the present council could work with a different mayor that was not so defensive. It is very obvious that there has to be spending cuts, most likely a cut in employees is going to be the only way to make significant savings. The mayor is too nice and wants to be friends with all the employees. You just cannot do that. It makes doing what has to be done just that much more difficult. The council knows and has probably told the mayor what has to be done but it is not their role to actually do the layoffs. The mayor has to step up and do what is necessary. And quick!!

Here is the problem. The town was always banking on tradition and a thread. At one point Corning was on 60 minutes for having the most millionaires per capita of any town in the country. But it all worked in a bubble, that didnt take much to pop. People came from Sucess, Datto, Neelyville, and at points Doniphan and Pocahontas, to go to the local Walmart. The more well off members of the community tried to keep new businesses from coming into town so they could keep their wages low. So after the technology boom in the late 80s to 90s. The kids got over the idea of having to drive 30 miles in some direction to get something more than Mayberry had to offer. So the ones that stayed did what was left. Drugs, sex, drinks, or church. Either way slowly but surely...all the work left, cant run a business with a bunch of foil boat sailors, cant support a family on minimum wage when there is j ok vs paying double that 30 miles away.

The world changes if you dont change with it, you get stuck in the mud and turn into gas like dinosaurs. Some of my best and worst memories were in Corning, but it doesn't even look like it did then.

If you get rid of Ray and Terry this town would be in a world of hurt!

You have that wrong. Ray and Terry are part of the problem when a councilman 'does not' review the monthly department funds as expected by the consituates who elected them. Ray and Terry seem to want to point the finger of fault at the mayor. Well, the mayor is at fault also for not sticking to his budget. The council is responsible for city finance and property. The mayor is a city figure head and administrator of 'his' budget as approved by the council. We have a case of gross mismanagement of the monies and property of all the citizens of Corning. A smart move now would be to replace the mayor and 'all' councilmen.

Was all the new police vehicles needed the last few years. If so why?

I believe the town needs good drinking water, roads without holes, mowed properties, Industries.
Having nice vehicles changes and helps nothing. We need things we already have and are paying for to be taken care of so maybe others will support our town instead of driving 30 miles to support other towns.

What you need is Local Government change.

Greg Arhent is your best choice! He has a lot of support and will work smart to help Corning. It will take time but Corning will prosper again. Many good people live there. I sometimes regret leaving there.

I don’t know the other candidates for council but did know ray vannoy. He is a smart, conservative businessman. You definitely need to keep him!

Ray Vanoy is part of the problem and his removal will be the solution for councilmen not doing their job of reading and understanding a fund that has more expenses than income. This good ole boy, friends with friends mentality will not fix the budget, drainage and water problems. These councilmen are getting a check each month, and their health insurance paid for. At this point, I seriously suspect that is the only reason their are there. We need new leadership with city officials required to understand basic income/expense bookkeeping. There are lots of line items in each city budget departments, and by Arkansas law can not remain in the Red, they must be made to stay black. Smart voters understand it is time to make city officials accountable.

Everyone wanted Phelan out and Rob was the only one running against him. Sometimes its best to just wait things out instead of shooting ourselves in the other foot!

A former council member didn’t like Phelan. HE got all this mess started, getting Rob to run. I’m sure he didn’t think he would win either. Hope you are happy former council member. Look what a mess we are in now. Bet your glad you are gone now.
