Seems like a relatively inexpensive start would be to build a pedestrian/bicycle bridge from the end of Coachman's trace to the end of Floral lane, a bicyle path from the end of Church St to the YMCA, and a bicycle path from the YMCA to Jetton St in Davidson. That route, if build specifically to not include autos on these new sections, could provide reasonably safe, low traffic pedestrian and bicyle routes all the way from Bailey Road in Cornelius to the Iredell County line. It would encourage more people to bike and walk and reduce the need for as many autos as well.
