this can be a new place where we can make our comments and ask our questions, that i am sure will not get answered.
#2 Aug 21, 2009
this whole town is in a up roar about this shelter and the conditions of it.
the animals are sick and pitiful, the place is very nasty, and there are paid workers there, there is no money, no vet will help out (because of personal reasons) HA HA HA
and the city/county just gave them 50 thousand dollars, and i would for one love to know what for?
no board member will talk to you(everything is personal)
there is no meetings, no books to be found, no records of any kind that we the people can see to see where the money "went" to!!!! wonder where?
#3 Aug 21, 2009
here is a few other questions...
is the shelter paid for?
is the power and water paid for by the city/county?
why can no one see the public books???
why is the board not appling for grants?
why has all this missing money and problems been ignored by the board and aldermen????? then still give them money????
why is there no pet of the week in the paper?
WHY???? will the paper no longer put sound off questions about the shelter in the paper?
since it is so broke, why have there not been any fund raisers?
how many times a week does the board members go to the shelter?
DO YOU THINK WE NEED ALL NEW BOARD MEMBERS???????
DO YOU THINK WE NEED A EMERGENCY PUBLIC MEETING WITH OR WITHOUT THE BOARD TO TRY TO HELP FIX THIS PROBLEM?????
DO YOU THINK WE NEED A VET TO TAKE CARE OF THESE ANIMALS AND HELP THEM LIVE?
WITH NO PROBLEMS????
the money has been there but now its gone poor management or whatever, the animals need cared for and adopted
my oponion is that every one there now, board, workers and anyone else almost BE REPLACED!! with new and caring people...

Well you hit the nail on the head! The board members may need to be euthanized?! No, Jk...!?
I believe all the animals need a right to life, clean conditions, and health care if wounded!
I understand euthanasia if the animal is beyond a state of treatment, but just to "KILL FOR THE SAKE OF KILLING" ? Come on!
Members of ANY BOARD should ALWAYS have the BEST interest of what you represent at heart!!!

Call ASPCA head quarter and spill the beans
on this bunch of money hungry thieves ! Corinth,
has too many dishonest people in control of this city! Makes me sick, knowing those poor innocent
animals are depending on Us and our elected city officials, can't get their shit together! Its Wrong ! Call the state officials in Jackson, Mississippi. God Help the Animals, not talking about the slime ball 2 legged ones! Jerry Latch
needs to get of his azz and make this correction
#7 Aug 21, 2009
Why are they not giving the animals another outlet..like rescue groups? They, the board just begs for tax payers monies. They don't run a proper Humane Society.
Our tax dollar is killing animals because this board does not know what they are doing. They needs to be run off.
What is going on??????????
#8 Aug 21, 2009
This is not very humane. Wake up Corinth. You have let a private people have your tax money and they kill animals. DEMAND something from your government!
#9 Aug 21, 2009
Nice city you have.

1. The humane society is a 501 c-3 charity that has rules , that by the way , ARE BEING BROKEN.
-A 501 c3 charity by the laws of the IRS has to have a copy of their by laws. Mr. Moore and the rest of the board haven't presented these to anyone and said "they didn't know where they were."
-by law the BOARD is required to have one public meeting per year with TAX PAYING CITIZENS OF CORINTH. Where's the meeting?????
2. Cathy Strait was fired because she knew the board was breaking these laws. Call it personal all you want. I call it being a coward. The law is the law. Cathy was the best thing that could ever happen to the humane society and as always, the people in Corinth that have a little money get to call all the shots.
3. I find it strange that the Daily Corinthian hasn't published one single sound off about the humane society and I know LOTS have been sent in.
4. I find it a conflict of interst that one of the board members has a local business here in Corinth that requires all of certain supplies to be purchased from "his" place of business. Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST????
5. I find it embarrassing that we have a board member who throws beer bottles at a person when they ask questions about the humane society. My gosh people, are these the type of citizens we want running a board???
6. There was 50,000 granted to the humane society. And I know the public is donating like crazy right now. So why is the BOARD trying to hard to find a vet to put all the animals down? Umm, they have already pushed all the vets away in Corinth. Next they thought Iuka would step in and we informed that vet what was going on and he backed out. There was a third vet, who is straight out of school, who also just backed out. OPEN YOUR EYES CORINTH.
7. The BOARD has to be replaced. There is no backing down from this. The animals shouldn't have to suffer because this town is all about politics. Call the mayor, he says call the alderman, call the alderman, they say call the mayor. BLAH BLAH. The mayor, the alderman, no one is listening or taking action. It's all about money and politics. None of these people care about the animals.
8. How can a BOARD be composed of people that do not even have education in animal care even be on a board? They don't even know what they are doing. Oh, lets put our name on a board for prestige, but never even visit the shelter until it appears on the dang channel 9 news? Who are the real animals here?
9. Tax payers of Corinth, be informed about what your money is going to and whos pockets its going in to. Now is the time for change. PLEASE STEP UP PEOPLE!!!!
#11 Aug 21, 2009
oh and by the way, back off Michael Boston. Atleast he ran the shelter and got dogs and cats adopted. I think the BOARD should stop spending the tax payers money on a lawsuit that is never going to FLY. The past is the past. We need to be focusing on the PRESENT and putting all that money towards the PRESENT. Not legal fees for something that supposidly happened. And if the board wants to point fingers on Michael Boston, maybe they should re evaluate what laws they have been breaking. Is it time for a lawsuit against them???????
#12 Aug 21, 2009
We have contacted the ASPCA and they are now informed on what is going on. Lots of people have called the "mayor" and he isn't going to do one single thing. We have already tried.
#13 Aug 22, 2009
Sounds like not only shelter board, but alderman, and MAYOR need to GO! LOOK at what goes on in our community folks!!! Vote for concerned people!!! Think!!! Get out of "good ol' boy" mentality!!!
#14 Aug 22, 2009
Thank God, Concerned made that call to ASPCA !
Also, contact Tupelo, Ms. Media, television station, they will come into town and do a feature story ! Please, someone make that call to any of the area television stations. Someone in Jackson, Ms needs to be aware of this situation !
Travis Childers, office should be contacted !
Jerry Latch is a Joke as a Mayor ! We are the voice for the Animals !

We contacted channel nine news out of Tupelo. They have came to Corinth two times already and aired it on the news.

This is a pound, not a shelter, this is a dog pound. Period. The old fashion kind. If they can't get a vet to put it to sleep then they do it themselves, by any means. The office is in shambles. Help is not greeted by smiling faces .Volunteers are asked to do what the staff is paid to do. The board are non exsistant figures that show up when peoople are watching but leave as soon as they feel they can. These people are more concerned with protecting thier own lives than the quality of the animals. When are we going to have an election or how about an impeachment??? This is the time to let this thing go and let the people who are truly concerned and dedicated to helping step in. There is no shame in admitting mistakes but there is a large amount in trying to cover them instead of correct them. Shame shame shame on the law makers of Corinth to keep handing the current board money. What is that old saying " give a man a fish and he eats for a day , teach a man to fish and he eats forever" I think this board has proved that it has no intention of feeding itself. It's time for some tough love. There are enough board members to fund the shelter privately if that is how they want to run it, as a "private" place of business. Six thousand a piece would in thier words " keep it running for two months". That mean it would cost each board member 33,000 per year to keep it running. Now, they aren't going to do that . 33,000 per board member per year to make that shelter run, approximatly... So does that mean they were planning on asking the city and county for 264,000 dollars for each year. That is about what it would be is it not? At 33,000 a year from around eight people its 264,000 a year. Now it sure seems like we should have alot more for that number doesn't it?

EVERYONE IS GETTING IT RIGHT -- THE NUMBER ONE MAIN PROBLEM HERE IS THE HUMANE SOCIETY BOARD!! THAT BOARD NEEDS TO BE DONE AWAY WITH AND RESTRUCTURED WITH INTELLIGENT ANIMAL CARING PEOPLE - IT SHOULD CONSIST OF A CITY ALDERMAN, A COUNTY SUPERVISOR, A VETERNARIAN, THE DIRECTOR OF THE SHELTER (WHICH DESPERATELY NEEDS TO BE CATHY STRAIT), AND POSSIBLY A SMART, ANIMAL LOVING CHILD. A CHILD COULD BRING SOME GREAT, FRESH, AND INNOCENT IDEAS TO PONDER. I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A LINE OR TWO AND SAY THAT THE WORKERS AT THE SHELTER ARE DOING A VERY WONDERFUL JOB. THEY ARE DOING THE BEST THEY CAN WITH WHAT THEY ARE DEALT. THEY ARE UNDER QUITE A BIT OF STRESS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF THE BOARD. THEY SHOULD NOT BE STRESSED OUT AT A JOB THEY ABSOLUTELY LOVE JUST BECAUSE SOME BOARD MEMBERS ARE THREATENED AND AFRAID OF WHAT IS ABOUT TO COME OUT INTO THE OPEN. INSTEAD, THE WORKERS NEED TO BE COMMENDED FOR DOING A JOB THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT TOUCH. THEY ARE SELFLESS INDIVIDUALS GIVING THEIR TIME OFF THE CLOCK AND THEIR OWN MONEY TO MAKE THE LIVES OF THE SHELTER ANIMALS A LITTLE BETTER.**WHOMEVER IS CHOOSING WHICH ANIMALS ARE TO BE PUT DOWN - I FEEL FOR YOU -- THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT BEING EVALUATED AND CHOSEN CORRECTLY. WALK IN TO THE SHELTER AND SEE WHAT ANIMALS ARE LEFT AND YOU WILL ALSO WONDER IF THEY WERE WEARING A BLINDFOLD OR JUST PUTTING SOME ANIMALS DOWN OUT OF SPITE. EVERYONE THAT IS MAD ABOUT THIS SITUATION SHOULD BE AND YOU NEED TO CALL YOUR SUPERVISOR OR YOUR ALDERMAN AND YOU DEFINATELY SHOULD GO TAKE A LITTLE VISIT TO THE SHELTER. ANYBODY CAN GO AND LOOK AT THE ANIMALS AND HOW THEY ARE LIVING. THAT IS IF THERE ARE ANY LEFT. SEEMS THE BOARD IS GETTING RID OF AS MANY OF THEM AS POSSIBLE THESE DAYS. NEEDS TO BE THEIR TURN!!

I am from Memphis so I have an outside looking in viewpoint.
There are a lot of comments - some wreckless and some well meaning, but first, are we talking about Corinth City Animal Control (The City Shelter/Pound) or Corinth Alcorn County Humane Society (a non profit org)???
These are two different entities so I am not sure where the problems lie. The city has little control over how a non profit is run. Does the Human Society have its own shelter?
Memphis has had a terrible history in animal control and have euthanized thousands of animals. The Humane Society is a separate entity. There is a group called "Change Our Shelter" that is organized and working with the city to resolve the problems at the city pound and they are making progress. I suggest that all who are concerned in Corinth form a similiar group and consult the Memphis group as to how to proceed.
They have already been through some of your battles so you can learn from them.
Also, get connected to every rescue group within a hundred miles and learn from them as well. Some may have openings to "foster" animals while awaiting adoption.
The root of the problem lies in irresponsible pet owners who do not spay/neuter and take care of their animals. It is then left to the city and non profits to deal with.
Get organized with a mass of concerned citizens, learn from other groups, get good at fundraising, and above all, identify and deal with the real issues in the right way. If needed, get legal counsel.

First let's clear up one thing 1st it is called the Corinth-Alcorn Humane Society and yes it is a non- profit. The past week the Humane Society Board has requested funding from the City and County $75,000 from each totaling $150k. Last year the Humane Society received only $27.5 in funding. What is going on here?? Sure we understand that non-profits are only controlled by the board that representes them, but wait a minute. When do we have a say the tax payers, in the way the money is being handed out and the way the Humane Society has been run. They have no public meeting or even make their records public. As I understand, it is public knowledge and should be requested by the city and county.
Mayor Latch is quoted in todays paper as saying "this is not a city /county function other than taking care of our animals".
Excuse me!! What the Heck!! They are requesting $150k jointly how can it not be a concern of the city/county.
I agree with Mr. Vann's opinion that the city/county should take over. I think that someone other than the sitting board should be in control of the Humane Society. I would be embrassed if I was a board member.
It's the Humane thing to do.
Citizens of Alcorn County need to have their animal spayed/neutered!! It is not their fault and are paying the price by being put to sleep. We the citizens of Alcorn County need to be more aware of our problems, the ones we have created!!
Please if you love your animal have it fixed!! If it runs loose in the yard have it fixed!!! We are not a county of mornons but it sure is looking like it from the outside!!
Please check out the link to our local paper.

A fully funded charity is an oxymoron and illegal under their 501 c-3 liscense. Anyone who contributes x amount of dollars will no longer have a tax write off. The shelter will not be able to fundraise (This BOD never did anyway)and will not be able to apply for grants.
The shelter will run on tax payers.
