My husband and I just moved to the area and we drove to Pickwick Lake and were repulsed by the smell there. Everyone talks about how nice it is there but it stinks!!

It's the paper mill. It doesn't always smell, but it is awful when it does.

my husband and I came to Pickwick for the 4th of July weekend and we stayed at Grand Harbor. It was beautiful and the lake is nice, but honestly the smell ruined our trip. I feel sorry for the city of Counce because the revenue from tourists would be so much more if the smell did not make people want to stay away! we won't be back until it is fixed.

There is no fixed,, thats the way the plant has been for 50 years. It doesn't smell like that all the time u just happened to get lucky and show up on one of those days. I live half way to memphis from pickwick and a cpl times a year can smell it here. But as someone said, the company employes a very large number of ppl through many different means and all of which pay good money. Jobs vs tourism,, well the answer is no brainer, tourism is nice but nowhere near brings in what paper mill does. Even though it smells sometime you'd be amazed at the numerous millionaires that love pickwick more than life its self every week in their weekend homes.

That smell keeps grifters away. To live here and enjoy the scenery and the River, smelling the Paper Mill is a small price to pay a couple of times a year. Tourists don't drive the local economy, the Paper Mill and the people that choose to live here do. Tourists are fine but they move away or are fickle visitors. Go somewhere else because the smell offends you...the traffic here is about as dense as it needs to be.

I hate it when the standard reply to the paper mill stench is "Smells like money."
It smells like a 3 day old, twice overfilled nasty diaper.
And it does not just happen a few times a year. It fouls the whole nearby western shore of Pickwick at least twice per week.
I have heard it is the bleach and lack of maintenance on the stack scrubbers.
It burns your eyes and lungs, and leaves a nautious odor in your house and cars.
EPA should have a 365x7x24 monitoring presence in the area.
I also think it is a major detriment to the real estate movement in the Counce area.

It is vigorously monitored 24/7-365 by environmental engineers who are overseen by the EPA. The sulphur smell is a harmless (other than the smell) byproduct of the papermaking process. It is constant but due to atmospheric conditions, drifts high or low making the smell more prevalent. There is no bleach used at the Counce mill.

Awe, heck, Lily,it's the papermill, some days, are worse than others. Been there for a long time. Pickwick area IS very nice. Heck, I use to live in an area where there was a pickle factory and sugarbeet factory, now, that could stink, too, pretty dang bad, BUT, it supplied jobs to our community and surrouding areas.
So.... if you don't like it, then, by all means, don't go back there. But me, I CAN see the forrest for the trees!!!
