Woman Attacked By Pit Bulls

Full story: WREG

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies says Helen Marshall, 62, who lives on Meadow Trail Cove, took an early morning walk before work with her son's Husky, "Skye." As Marshall approached a home in the 8600 block of Oak Trail Lane about 3 a.m., three pit bulls ran from an open garage and attacked her dog.

I certainly hope Mrs. Marshall heals quickly, as well as Skye. I know that must have been a horrible experience. On another note, that ticks me off to read that the pit bulls owner was so irresponsible. This breed gets such a bad rap and this does not help the cause at all. There are good dogs and bad dogs and NOT all pit bulls are bad dogs. Please get better soon, Mrs. Marshall and Skye!

The owner(s) of the attacking animals should NOT ever see them again! If it happened once, it can happen again. Thank God the innocent victims are alive! The "responsible" (actually irresponsible) owner(s) should, in my humble opinion, be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Starting with leash law violation...up to felony assault, and everything in-between. In the late '80's my black chow bit a beagle down the street...and was euthanized. I loved my 2 yr old black chow...he was registered, and had all his shots. In retrospect, i now know his humane death was justified. I was furious at the time. These 3 pitbulls have drawn blood from HUMAN flesh! They should be "put down" immediately!

It's not the dogs that are bad, it's all in how they are raised. I pray Ms. Marshall and Skye have speedy recoveries.

I own one of these alnimals and she is as sweet as she could be. It all depends on how they are raised adn if they are taken to a vet regularly. My dog is great with my six year old daughter. I would not trade her for the world.

This is so tragic, yet so preventable..
Dog owners (Pit Bull owners especially)
Please be responsible and know where your dogs are, and what they are doing at all times! Do not let them out without a leash. There is a leash law put into place and it is there for a reason!
Pit Bull attacks will make it to the news each and every time no matter how severe, you have to keep your dog out of trouble!
I know for a fact that the media unfairly targets Pit Bulls because my Pit Bull was viciously attacked by two Huskies, and when I begged the media to do a story, I was told "it was not newsworthy".

Nobody should ever jump in between dogs that are fighting. I personally was bitten by a Lab at the shelter when I was trying to break up a fight between a Lab and a Cocker Spaniel. In the frenzy of the fight, your arm, hand, or whatever could be mistaken for the other dog and you can get bit.

In this story, it does not matter to the news that alot of dogs get into dog fights and can bite a person if they jump in, what does matter is that a Pit Bull was involved.
There is no doubt that ALL Pit Bulls will suffer because of this incident, when truly it is bad owners that are to blame!

In response to T_Hites comment, this is EXACTLY the problem with the Memphis community. They seem to think that the victim is always at fault somehow. Never mind that this "old" lady has a right to walk a dog at whatever time of the day or night that she sees fit and expect to be safe!!
Can't ever accept responsibility for the "crime" that has been committed...always someone else's fault...

This was not their 1st attack, from what we know it was at least their 4th !!! We live in fear because these dogs get out all the time and they are vicious. Enough is enough.

I hate when this happens! It gives a bad name for the breed, which it dose not deserve. These dogs had to be trained to do this sort of thing. You can take any large breed of dog, and with the wrong handling, they too can be dangerous! I feel so sorry for the lady and her dog, but I hope this dose not lead to alot of bad poplicity for the breed in general. If these dogs attacked, then they need to be destroyed, and the owner needs to be punished for raising them to be mean dogs. They were not born this way I assure you. And No, I do not own pit bulls! But I do know how sweet they can be if in the right hands. My son has one! She is sweeter and more gentle than my Goldens. I hope the lady and her dog recovers, and I will pray for them both!

I hope Mrs. Marshall and Skye come out ok. As for the owners of the dogs I feel they should face stiff penalties. These people have been careless.

I don't believe in bad dogs just bad people.

Pit Bulls, like children, are not born to harm other people. They are taught to do this. Mrs Marshall bares not responsibility for any of this except maybe walking her dog at 3a.m.. Even then, she should not be afraid to do so. Least of these will be the dogs. They don't know any better. It's the owner of the dogs who bares all the responsibility for this incident. Euthanasia would be appropriate for the owner.

I think they should just ban pit bulls all together. And, why do some of these pet owners let their animals just run freely in the neighborhood. Their need to be stricter laws against this.

Sure hope Mrs. Marshall and skye will be ok. Those dogs bite and will do it again if they get a chance. Hate to say it but they really need to put them down where this will never happen again.

ALL dogs bite if not properly trained! Get off the "pit bull" bashing. I have a dalmatian that would probably be vicious if she had been raised that way and never shown any affection!

i am a pit bull owner. and these attacks all speak for the owners. all anyone ever says is that pit bulls are bad dogs. its all how they are raised. i think that this just shows that people not dogs are to blame. i hope that the lady recovers i dont understand why she was out that late but thats her. i do not understand why dogs any kind should be treated so badly
