Miss Williams was principal at O'Neal, which is where I went. I am almost 54, so I was a kid around the same time all of you were. Can you believe they tore down the old Carter Burgers??? That building has been in Cordele for as long as I can remember...formerly a DQ. And that woman at Crisp Theater was a grouchy something. She never believed that I was under 12! I also remember Marcus's Frosty Treat (later Horton's), and like many others, I got in my share of trouble at the Purple Jester!

I lived in Cordele all of my life until I was 36 years and moved to Cartersville, Georgia. I remember all of the wonderful years and memories you share. Elizabeth Williams was principal when my children went to O'neal in 1982 thru 1984. I am not sure she is still alive, but when my father was in Cordele Manor Retirement home, I would visit her there and she was just as sharp as ever.

I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments about Cordele. I live in Americus now, but there is not a day when I don't think about Cordele. I loved growing up there.
Did you know Emily Pullen or her brother Lee Pullen who use to live in Cordele on the Lake? I was close friends with them long ago, and I wonder how they are doing these days. Anyone know?

Oh no not Carter Burgers!!!! Now that is taking it just a little to far. What do these people think they are doing destroying our childhood memories. Ah yes Mrs Jones at the theater. I bet that old mean woman fantisized about torturing children but how we laugh about her now. She terrified me when I was a child just looking at her.

They tore down the old Carter Burgers, but built a new one behind where the old one was.

Miss Elizabeth Williams, the principal of JS Pate for so many years, is alive and well! She is living at Cordelia Manor Assisted Living. I see her every time I visit my parents. Such a sweet lady.

Thank-you still_here. I knew I had not completely lost my mind....yet. Miss Williams was definitely the principal at J.S. Pate when I attended from 1963-1967. Mrs. Frank Starr was my 1st grade teacher. Mrs. Audrey Watson taught me 2nd grade. Mrs. Rosa Williams, 3rd grade and Narcissa Charles in 4th grade.

Do you guys remember eating Sunday dinners at Wade's Cafeteria? How about when a few amusement rides would set-up in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot?

There was no food any better than Wade's Cafeteria!! Still isn't! S&S Cafeterias don't hold a candle to Mrs. Wade's! I remember the rides in the PW parking lot, but what I remember better were the cute bag boys that worked at Piggly Wiggly!! lol I bought a lot of non-essential items! What about the marble lunch counter at Ed Jones Drug Store? When mama or daddy went to the drive-through at 1st State Bank, I'd dig up a dime and run around the corner where I could go in the back door of the drug store and buy 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream on a cone with my dime.

I had not thought about that drug store in years. I was a fan also! It was actually a pleasure to get sick, go to Dr. Gower and wind-up at Ed Jones to get a prescription filled. When I was a child, Dr. O.T. Gower even made house calls at night and on weekends!

Was it Tarver's Hardware that Santa would sit out front of every Christmas?

Yes it was Tarvers. I loved their toy section! And at the Fair Store, there was a toyland upstairs at Christmas time. I remember Dr. Gower making house calls, and Dr. Wooten before him. When my sister and i would go to town on Saturday for something, we'd go to Ed Jones and call Mama to come and get us. While we waited, we ate ice cream and read comic books. Besides me, how many females still stand at the window and get hot dogs from the pool room???

When I am visiting Cordele and go for scramble-dogs, I still stand at the window. Is there any other way? lol. Does anyone remember the store called Smith Sisters? Mama would take me in there while she was shopping and was always afraid I would break something.

Do you remember when Pecan Street was a dirt road?
Yes, I remember when Pecan Street was dirt. the only houses there were the Royal house and Gower house. On the other side of the road was an old farmhouse looking structure. I was in band and I spent many hours marching down that dirt road, practicing our marching. There weren't many streets past 25th that had houses built on them at that time.

And it was COMER's pool, not Cromer's. Jack Comer was the owner.
