I'd be willing to bet, that the people who want to close boat ramps, don't want a fence on the border between Mexico and the USA.
Hey,an invasise species, can take many shapes, and all of them cost the taxpayer lot's of money, and do a lot of damage. Closing a few boat ramps will not solve the problem with Zebra mussells. They will get in the lakes, even without boat traffic. Ducks and geese traveling from lake to lake, also transport the mussels larve. This problem would never have happened,if the politicians on the federal and state level passed good legislation,on ballast dumping from foreign ships on the great lakes. |

Gee, this is news, where did this come from, fish and game not monitoring it properly, when they had the funding?
Does that mean that Sandy beach is also close?
duhhhh, if the boat ramp is closed. Do you think the beaches are closed to, what a dumb question. |
The beaches are not closed. Just the boat ramps. Make sense? Duh |

Far be it from me to be a party pooper, but aren't all these efforts 'to protect' Berkshire lakes all a fool's errand?
Isn't the purpose of every living thing to multiply -- especially when presented with an environment where its own predators are limited? The state can close all the boat ramps it likes, but it's all just one big holding action against the inevitable power of biology and the evolution of aquatic life in Northeast US lakes. How're they going to stop errant birds that attempt to feed on stray mussels, dislike the taste, and end up dropping the still-living booty in other bodies of water? |

Legislation can't stop nature. Zebra mussels would've arrived eventually if there were no natural predators to limit their growth. European Homosapiens overwhelmed the New World; life adapts. Closing boat ramps is only giving state bureaucrats at the Mass. DEP something to do to justify the agency's budget. |
They better have a patrol to check fishin' gear used next to boat ramp, eh.
They can take there car wash theory and wipe
there butts, I for one am not going to pay to have my boat washed off. next you will have to inspect your lures and live bait. |

The Liberals who run the nanny state of Mass. think they can control human behavior and can regulate the most abundant element on the planet (Carbon), so trying to control something as mundane as Zebra Mussels shouldn't take anyone by surprise. Watch for MA DEP to ask for a large budget increase next year to fight the Zebra Mussel Threat. And watch for Legislators and MA House and Senate sub-committee chairmen to take $50,000 junkets overseas to attend Zebra Mussel conferences. Now do you get it? |

I have seen where they issue a ticket if you drop your boat in and there are weeds on your trailer from a previous drop.
This is crazy the Mussels are comming the Mussels are coming run... Look no lake has ever been lost as some would have you believe. no property values ever dropped and no one dies from zebra Mussels... Let's get a grip. If the ramp is closed to the public then we need to see the public money cut off. No dam repairs, no ramp upkeep, no stocking the lake. No week cutting, nothing. If it is going to become a private lake then let the people on th elake own everything. |

I hope they are lookin' at my 9 I carry on my boat when they try to issue useless paper. |

Some ways to deal with this problem:
Teach the zebra mussels to ride dirt bikes and let them live in Lanesborough instead of Laurel Lake. Ever see a redneck zebra mussel? Plenty of good eatin'. Give the zebra mussels gay porn to look at and they'll soon stop multiplying, although they'll want the same privileges to marry as anyone else. Put them in the traffic circle in Pittsfield at a Tea Party and they'll die from the pollution. Sell them at high prices at Guido's and watch them become extinct as they fly off the shelves to sea food hungry weekenders who still wish they had bought in the Hamptons. Stress the local, fresh, artisanal angle. anyone got any other ideas? This menace must be stopped before we all have stripes. |

I love how the stockbridge selectman who wants to close stockbridge bowls boat ramp and owns water front property. He would try and keep his boat in the lake. Not to mention that when the Josh Billings is in town Im sure that they will inspect every canoe Which my be carring Zebra mussels.

Effects of zebra mussels:
Zebra mussel infestation on the walls of Arthur V. Ormond Lock on the Arkansas River Zebra mussel-encrusted Vector Averaging Current Meter from Lake Michigan Zebra mussels are filter feeders. When in the water, they open their shells to admit detritus. Zebra mussels are a great nuisance to people. Since colonizing the Great Lakes, they have covered the undersides of docks, boats, and anchors. They have also spread into streams and rivers nationwide. In some areas they completely cover the substrate, sometimes covering other freshwater mussels. They can grow so densely that they block pipelines, clogging water intakes of municipal water supplies and hydroelectric companies. Also, as their shells are very sharp, they are known for cutting people's feet, resulting in the need to wear water shoes. Zebra mussels are also believed to be the source of deadly avian botulism poisoning that has killed tens of thousands of birds in the Great Lakes since the late 1990s.[2] However, zebra mussels and other non-native species are credited with the increased population and size of smallmouth bass in Lake Erie [3] and yellow perch in Lake St. Claire.[4]. They cleanse the waters of inland lakes, resulting in increased sunlight penetration and growth of native algae at greater depths. This proves beneficial for fish most of the time, helping the fish live in better conditions. This cleansing also increases water visibility and filters out pollutants. Do you people now see why there is a problem with Zebra Mussels? |
