A lot of Animal Shelter drama and it all stems from one thing: dishonesty. which has seemingly become the fabric and overriding culture of that organization. Question that should be asked is, how did it get there? and how do you take it somewhere else. What is the mission statement of this organization or does it even have one. It comes down to the most important resource: people... who ultimately make things happen. It needs real leadership if it's to become a viable entity. LOVE and PROTECT what's right...
It's very simple: the bottom line and best policy is to be honest. be honest to yourself and be honest to others and everything will be ok and where it should be.. if people of poor character and integrity arrive on the scene then it's all in shambles?.. that's WEAK. If it were a sound and strong organization with proper rules and regulations with an accounting system that would make it tighter than a bank safe then things would never deteriorate to that point..
You are thinking of the Last President, Mrs.Wright. Before her hostil takeover that place was great.
Thank you for your support, Mrs. Wright. Hope everyhting is ok with you and your family, may god bless you both:) have a merry christmas.

I am not Debra Wright! I was replying to a post from Corbin Transplant. She was asking about the other person who was wrongfully taking shelter funds.

At this time I am not a shelter supporter, But thank you for the kind words anway.

wow, carlie, that is completely TERRIBLE...
is there ANYONE you can go to? that's just terrible... heck, no wonder the kitten was so sick under those conditions... & to euthanze an animal so you don't have to deal with it.. just breaks my heart... i seriously want to cry...
i truely wish i hadn't read your post...
YOU ARE RIGHT- animals DO have a better chance on the street...
i am now VERY glad that the strays that find my door - I have found a home for - INSTEAD of taking them to the shelter...
i'm gonna go (cry) now....
thank you for the post - these animals need a voice....& WE as a community need to get this taken care of ASAP......
just plain sorriness & poor supervision i guess...
Wow, thank you for being so understanding and compassionate. I plan to volunteer there again and see if the conditions are any better. If not then I'm going to write a letter or report it to someone.(Who do you think?)

It was horrible though. I still think about the all of the animals still there and how I wish I could have done more for them than I did.(Especially the little gray kitten.)

Thank you so much for your consideration though.=]

I'm not trying to get off the subject that you are speaking of, but as I was reading your post I noticed you said there were pit bull puppies.
I personally went up there today (Tuesday) to look for my lost pit and I did not see one. I also, was not made aware that there were possible animals in the quarintine room.
If you do not mind I would love to know if there was "any" chance that my baby may have been there.
Thanks so much.
BTW I agree the shelter did not smell pleasant, but the lady I spoke to was real nice. Yet, she told me that had not had any pits there recently. Go figure...?
The pit bull puppies in the Quarentine room when I went were much smaller than your puppy. But I have been keeping an eye out for her (him?) since I've read your post!=]

I hope you find her (him?).

They probably said that they didn't have any pit bull puppies because they've already euthanized all of them. I heard that a woman's neighbor took her kittens down there and the woman called them only 2 days later to get them back, but they had already put them all to sleep.

That is absolutely horrible. I heard that they might have had a no pit rule for awhile, but they have recently done away with it.

This is for everyone, community, board, shelter, and county officials!

When animal control/sheltering services are funded and managed correctly they actually provide more services than what meets the eye.

Of course they should offer shelter, food, water, and a temporary home for homeless animals in our community. However, this is only one small aspect of what doing the job right should entail.

The people who work or volunteer in animal rescue really need to understand the importance of the big picture. Many not so fun calls have to be made. This job isn't just about the here and now. It's about the future and making our community a better place for all.

When these services are funded and managed efficiently they should greatly improve the quality of life for all. They should also help to ensure the health and well being for not only the animals at the shelter, but the community as a whole. How?

The general public is oblivious to the health threats stay cats and dogs pose to not only our pets, but to our families as well. Not only do these animals suffer needlessly, they also spread many zoonotic diseases such as, scabies, intestinal parasite (tape, round, and hook worms, giardia, coccida), ring worms, herpes, Chlamydia, and yes of course rabies. These are just a few on a very long list of zoonosis: Disease that go between animals and humans. Google it if you do not believe me. ZOONOSIS

The people who work for a shelter must take the health of the public as well as all shelter animals into account with every single animal they receive. This is why the sick ones are euthanized. It's heartbreaking I know, but if you don't do it, you run the risk of having to euthanize every animal in the shelter if these things spread. Then even worse a small child catches something. Like I said, it is necessary. Please remember that the Knox-Whitley animal shelter is operating on an estimated budget of $90,000 annually, not the million dollar budgets like the shelters you see on animal planet.

Things of this nature are spread through feces, urine, saliva, contact with infected area, and many are air born. All invisible to the naked eye. Now take a minute and think about the stray animals who poo in your yard, lay on your steps, share your pets food. Old timers actually wormed their children 1-2 times per year. But people don't do this anymore.

Then you also have the potential of dog bite, and damages to personal property. More education, support, funding, and people are needed to provide these services. I'm all for a annual dog tagging,

5 bucks a year is worth not having your trash shredded in your yard, not having poop in your yard, not having to worry about the safety of your family and pets, or not worrying about damages to your property. It would also help with providing valuable information in case of dog bite, if the animal is not found the person who has been bit must receive a series of painful shots.

The goal should be to get the population of homeless animals with in a reasonable number. But this isn't an easy task. You can learn more by visiting the HSUS website.

To Carlie who wrote that the shelter was a mess. Write a letter to the newspaper and let them know that. I was a volunteer last year for about a week. I agree that it was sad to see all the animals in dirty cages. I haven't been back since and I guess that it is still the same. What the people need to know is that about 80% of the animals brought in get euthanized. Everyone thinks they are going to get good homes (the animals), sorry to disappoint you but that is not true. If you bring your dog or cat in, come back in 2 or three weeks and see if it is still there. If they tell you it was adopted out, ask to see the adoption papers, you do have the right. Nine out of ten times the animal was euthanized and how sad is that. People wake up, get your cat or dog nuetered or spayed and stop the unwanted kittens or puppies from being born. If you can't keep them, then that is a great reason for nuetering and spaying. Otherwise your puppy, kitten, dog or cat, may just be killed, because of overcrowding.

Loathed One, I completely agree. I think I know who you are, if so, I would sure like to see you as Director for the shelter. If it is who I think it is, you know who I am (T), I thought about putting in as the Director, but I am very happy with the job that I have. If you do become director, I will volunteer my time, and help with anything that I can. You have my support, good luck.

you aren't kidding... i have spent quite a bit of time taking in & caring for strays while i find them homes....
i know this will bother you, but i have found abandoned kittens before that looked alot like you described... you clean that baby up, clean it's eyes with a warm wet washcloth (then - keep them clean), get some formula & i have had them LIVE...
my personal experiences with animals is why i can relate so well... i have told people i wanted animals before just to get them out of their present conditions & took 2 or 3 of them & give them away myself - so i knew they were ok, then had good homes....
i can only hope someone takes a print of this whole thread to someone who can actually GET something done, because it is clear from several posts that things are still really wrong here.. that amy chick was gone a while before you guys went down there... amy is nothing more than a scapegoat for the conditions you saw. as well as her actually breaking the law, she is being completely blamed for the mess that obviously occured from the animals AFTER she was gone...
sad deal here....

For your information, this is the first time that I have put anything on here. I just read it. I think it is crazy that people try to start trouble. The shelter needs everyones help. And yes she would have my support, she has had alot of training. Everyone would do something different. If you have a problem with me then tell me. And for everyones information, I was not fired from the shelter. I resigned in June of 2006, because my baby was born premature and he was very ill and I could not work for the first year of his life. I love the shelter and I would do anything for the shelter that I possibly could. I would love to be the Director, but I have a wonderful job, that I love. I would support anyone in the position, if they were in it for the right reason. If your heart is not in it, then you don't need to be there. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!

Gee, the loathed one seems to be so smart about the animal issues, but bitter about something. Why would anyone loathe you? Why don't you apply for the "Amy" position?

Rachael has used her real name on all her posts; why would she switch to a different name? Rachael is beautiful, inside and out. She is very talented with musical intruments and can also sing. Sounds to me like some jealousy is involved.

I agree with everything you have said, with one exception.

The Surrenders right to seeing the adoption paper work, or having any knowledge as to what happened to the animal they surrendered to the shelter. Why? Several reasons.....

1. While surrendering the animal you should be asked to fill out a number of questions and it should also state "by signing that piece of paper you are signing away all of your rights to that animal."

2. Doing so has there is a potential to create a legal liability. Proper adoption paper work should include the Name, Address, Phone number, and DL# of the adopter. This brings me to #2.

3. The potential of creating a very bad experience for all involved. If the Surrender decides they want the animal back, they know where to go to harass the person who has taken the animal.

4. BIG PICTURE REASON an animal shelter should be used as your absolute last resort! If you do not care enough about your animal to seek out every other conceivable option of placing him/her yourself, you do not deserve to know! You have given up all hope of finding someone else to take care of your BABY. This doesn't apply to all the people who bring owned animals to the shelter, but it applies for majority. Your signing your rights, and further association with your BABY over. TRY HARDER. If anyone is looking for options just ask around. TOPIX is a great place to find pets homes! Always use pictures! Many shelters have associations with other Animal rescue organizations who may even specialize in Fostering! This again should also be used as a last resort, so many animals and so little resources all the way around!

If your pet has a defect, ask around I'm sure someone will offer helpful advice here. Sometimes it's not the pet, but the owner. A pet is not a possession, or a social status. It is another living, feeling, and dependent being. They require food, water, veterinary care, shelter, exercise, dominance and love. Promise you if you provide all these things to him or her they will more than return the favor.

There are exceptions to every rule. If you have dire circumstances the shelter will do all in their power to find him a home. No one wants to take a life, especially when you devote your life to saving them (as in all of them). BIG PICTURE.

This is why I am the loathed one! I promise I am not hard or cold hearted. I have a love and respect for all living things. I want to see an end to suffering. Not just a quick fix.

I went up there today and I didn't like what I saw out of this so called new director. There was no one in the office, and she was talking to this, I'm assuming another employee and I just stood there and waited to be assisted. I mean they were cutting up, and everything. Ugh!- people that do that are so Rude...cheers to the new in-bred director..

I think rosemary is soo sweet.
she always treats me nice when I drop off my litter of puppies.
she should be director, not the new lady.
I mean not to sound rude, but rosemary just knows what shes doing that's all. I mean Come onn- Shes worked there what, almost 4 yers? yeah, that's why rosemary needs to be taking over. Why didn't they just let her keep the job as director insted of hiring someone else? She could have handled it!
noweing her perconaly, she is a wonderfol person, and she loves animals. People, I dont nowe? He-Ha-Ha
When Our family volontered one yeer, down there, thanks to the shelter, she bout all of us lunch while we were there. now how sweet of her. Like I said, Rose should have been the replacement director end of story, the board messed up
