What is the law for food handlers in restaurants wearing gloves? I've noticed some do and some don't. McDonalds never wears gloves, but Wendy's does. I've just always wondered why some don't wear gloves when handling food. I've watched them go from handling money to putting a taco together at Taco Bell.

At a lot of fast food restaurats, such as; Mcdonalds, Taco Bell, Krystal etc... don't require gloves. However, You are required to wash your hands every time u touch something other than the food there. Whether they adhere to it or not really depends upon the employeees, or the manager on duty if they catch it.

Dinners Made Simple workers don't wear gloves either. The workers go from phone, to ink pen, to cash register, to fixing your food - all WITHOUT washing their hands. I won't eat from there any more unless I walk in to place my order and ask them to wash their hands before preparing my food.

The employees at Wendy's are wearing gloves every time I go in there. They are about the only ones I have seen in this area.

These are the facts: It doesn't really matter if they were the gloves or not, it should, but it doesn't. Think about it for a minute, and then ask yourself this.
How long have those gloves been on?
What all have they touched while the gloves have been on?
Have they cross-contaminated the food while the gloves are on,(like touching raw meats and vegetables)?
This has been a concern of mine for some time now. Here are some examples of things I have observed in different food establishments.

1. I witnessed an employee slicing deli meat with gloves on while scratching a very red and scabbing rash on the arm.
2. Saw an employee take out the garbage and then go right back into the resturant and begin serving food, the whole time wearing the same gloves.
3. An employee bringing food to my table, again, with gloves on, then walking back into the kitchen while wiping her hands on the back of her pants.
4. The always faithful wiping of the nose, with the gloves on.
5. Observed an employee cleaning tables, counters, etc, with cleaning solution, then going into the kitchen and preparing food.
6. Actually saw an employee at a fast food restaurant eating while handling and preparing food and that is a MAJOR health violation.

That is just an example of some of the things I have seen. I guess my point is this, disposable gloves are for the purpose of keeping the food we purchase as safe and bacteria free as possible. They are not to protect the wearer, they are meant to be worn to protect the food and us the consumer.
Don't be fooled into a false sense of security simply because you see someone wearing gloves, it might not always mean that they practice clean food preparation habits. I would much rather someone not wear them and keep thier hands washed and clean.
Just a little "food for thought"

So, it is nasty not to wear them. I won’t even eat food that my family touches, even if I know their hands are clean. But then again I am super crazy about stuff like that. I wash my hands more then I probably should... I even wash my hands before I pee.

It is very appropriate to wash your hands before you pee, this is protecting yourself from germs...very smart...a practice used by nurses and microbiologists!

Every restaurant has bad practices from time to time. You either accept it or do not eat out. When you pay people minimum wage and a little above you cannot expect more. Also it is alot of teenagers and similar workers who do not care. As long as you aren't food poisioned who cares? Either accept the consequences or eat at home.

If you only knew what you eat half the time at these laces, everyone in America would always cook at home.

your immune system will be weak from having no practice on regular germs. when some superbug comes by, you will die. I on the other hand let my immune system have a lot of practice. I don't wash my hands every time i eat unless there is actually visible dirt on them. i don't worry about what they do with my food at restaurants and I scratch my nose and eyes as much as I feel like.
