Sure. Spend our tax money during this time of excess. The milk and honey flows freely and all people have everything that they need. No one is losing their homes or their jobs. So go ahead, most important LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY and throw away your useless old firearms and buy new ones. We have plenty of cash to afford your vanity.

I guess if my life (or my family)or the officer's life depended on a piece of euipment, I'd like to know they had the best. It's not like they are buying a new jet to get to califonia.

What are the odds (the chance an event will ocurr, expressed in numbers) your life or your family's life will depend on the gun a cop is carrying ?

Police depts don't keep you safe.

You are probably right, the chances are minimal,(let's say .01% probability). But then so are the chances I will have to use my carry gun, but I don't carry old crap either, regarless of the odds. Sounds like maybe you have had some run ins with your local law enforcement.

Old news story about chop and melt:

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/01/07/us/us-law-a...

Chicago has 8,500 to 13,000 cops (the true number is a secret). New York has 25,000 to 35,000 cops. We are near to living in a police state where only police, politicians and criminals have guns (while innocent people are still getting victimized by all three).

Virginia prohibits police from destroying functional firearms.

Guess that's why I have absolutely no desire to live in Chicago or New York. Out here, cops are our neighbors. They are respected. (except, of course, by the dirt bags.)

The notion or idea that police keep us safe is dangerous, and if we believe that idea, it increases the danger to us. My opinion is most applicable to the weakest members of society (women, seniors and the handicap).

The dirt bags that don't respect police, don't respect other people. We should be concerned that dirt bags don't respect us, not the police. The police are armed 24/7 while most others are not (the weakest people).

Cops can destroy worn or damaged service guns. They should auction to the public useable firearms. Gun control (when police destroy good firearms) is unAmerican. I don't respect unAmerican people.

I can agree. Same page, different perspective. I don't rely solely on law enforcement for my safety. Trust me when I say I can protect myself and my family. Law enforcement should be watching out for the weaker. I can also agree that destroying serviceable firearms is not only stupid, it's expensive. Most agencies trade them in and they are then sold to whoever wants a well used firearm, at least for sidearms.

Agreed that trade in is the smart way to go.
summitgunbroker.com always has police trade ins. They have a couple different lots of glocks, and a lot of S&W 5906 trade ins there now.
