Lack of business.....who would of guessed. That grill has never made a profit no matter who operated it including the City.

In fact it is passed time to shut down that tax eating enterprise called a golf course. Our City officials claim they need the course to support ecconomic developement. This reasoning is pure BS. There has been very little ecconomic devlopement over the years and I don't see much in future. Heck a person can't even buy a new car in Cove, but lampassas, 1/6 our size, has several car dealers.

Poor guy got tricked into getting a contract. He should have known better. Cheapskate golfers want the grill, but to cheap to use it with the excuse the food's not any good. Golfers will be urging city to staff it again, but they won't pony up and spend any money there. They won't go to Egg Town either. They will continue eating at McDonalds or Burger King.

The city used to operate this money syphon machine and got tired of losing money so they contracted it out. It has never made money and never will.

Ashamed? One of the candidates in his past life was involved in working against the citizens of this city. Hard to imagine how a scam company like No Touch could have silent local private investors. These investors lobbied the EDC to provide more money to their scam. By the time they were run out of town the tax payers lost about 1.5 million. We got a real haircut thanks to our EDC and the private investors.

This is a history lesson. Hope someone else can provide more details.

I wouldn't blame the golf course for lack of economic development in Cove. The EDC has a lock on that. The golf course could make money if it was properly kept up. You can't expect people to come out to a golf course that is in the worst municiple course of any in the area. At one time (not so long ago) that golf course was the number 2 source of revenue for the city. But hey, let's continue to pump the recreation budget into parks and pools that no one uses instead of a golf course that could bring in money.

Copperas Cove is a good city. It offers recreation opportunities for children and adults. A city the size of Cove, should definately have recreation opportunities, including a golf course. I think our city manager is a good asset along with our CCISD administration. We all have different opinions, but I am proud of Cove and think the city is continuing to grow and I support the efforts.

Since the golf course has always operated deep in the red, I must assume that the upkeep has been subpar, if you us retired cpo's logic. I say BS!!!

I'm sorry but hundreds of people use the city park every week. Sports, picnics, fishing-the occasional church group having fund raisers-Don't know where you live but the parks and pool at city park are used quite extensively. The tax dollars currently spent on the recreational areas should continue to be spent as they have been. I am unsure why they built a BMX track then plowed it under. Kids were using the BMX track. The pool on the other side of town has had issues in the past of someone throwing oil in it shutting it down but that little park down there seems to have walkers, bikers and kids playing in it too. The golf course did used to be (note I said used to) be nicer and I don't know how to fix that recreational aspect for you but money has been pumped into the golf course every year because it loses money. Pick another aspect like the money pumped into the road that will never be built to go after.

Show us the numbers that the golf course has "always" operated in the red. The golf course has only started to operate in the red after the second nine holes were built. I can see why you are wondering, since you are the one full of BS.

I don't know if it has always been a money loser or not, but I know that "19th Hole" grill and bar has.
The bottom line is general revenue tax money should not pay to support it. If it doesn't make money, figure out a way for it to be in the black - raise green fees, cart rentals, etc. If that doesn't do it, then close it. Parks and Rec seems to have no problems raising youth rec fees when needed.

Why shouldn't general tax revenue pay to support it? General tax revenue pays to support swimming pools, the civic center, parks and a lot of other quality of life things. What makes the golf course any different? Using your logic, why should I pay school taxes? My only child is 52 years old and has been out of the public school system for about 34 years. Like it or not, the course is a quality of life addition to the city and should be kept up and improved.
It appears that the new concessionaires at the snack bar, the Morrisons, are making a go of it comfortably. The City Manager changed the approach to negotiating the lease and instead of a fixed $600 a month lease payment the current contract calls for a percentage of the monthly gross. Even in the slow months that allows the Morrisons to retain a high percentage of what goes into the cash register. Good on Mrs. Gardner.
