I actually have a slumlord. I've been renting this house for over a year, and the landlord basically refuses to fix anything herself. She suggests the quickest and cheapest fix to everything and her most famous is having my bf or his dad fix everything for her. We've repaired the toilet, hot water heater and holes in the walls at our own expense. We have a mice problem here, can't use any of the cabinets or drawers in our kitchen because they're able to get into them from the basement somehow (shoddy cabinet work) and her solution was to buy a "mouser cat " and throw poison everywhere. They crawl into the walls and die leaving gross smells around the house, meanwhile there's holes on the side of the house where a skunk has dug tunnels (because there's no footing underneath) and caused the basement to flood. Her solution? Cement it up! Which isn't going to work because it go can anywhere around this house and simply dig in another spot. She even suggested my boyfriend spend time and money digging out the bottom of the house and setting a footer there cause it's "real easy". I'm done with her quick fixes, we have payed the rent on time for over a year, and were willing to fix things around the house with no complaints. Who do I report her to in the city of tonawanda?

Agreed. This thread is absurd. You clowns should get a job and get off welfare; then you don't have to live in $400/month apartments. Even if you decide to remain a welfare baby, you can live wherever you want if the landlord doesn't fix stuff: take your month of free rent as he evicts you and go somewhere else. Stop complaining entitlement mongers.

If I rented an apartment in Center Allentown and the landlord didn't repair a leaky roof, for example, I would do the following:

A.)Not pay rent
B.)Move out

I'm not sure why you people feel that this is a violation of tenant rights. This tenant rights group is a joke. A landlord doesn't force anybody to live in their apartment. Leaving is an option.

Another option is to buy your own house. If you can't afford to do that, then you have to deal with landlords, good or bad. If you get tired of dealing with bad landlords, you should work harder at your job and buy a place of your own. Go someplace else. Stop whining.

I get the feeling that people who complain about the place that they live in are just looking for handouts, an excuse to not pay rent but continue to stay there. If a place isn't up to code, why would you want to live there? LEAVE. Unless, of course, you don't have any money to leave. Take responsibility people!!

1)Your the clown
2)Not everyone who rents is on welfare, matter of fact there are many homeowners who get public assistance. About the same.
3)Stop being mad because the right man is in office. And that the republican party will probably not be in office for another 50 yrs. or ever again. Things are changing and it's time for the real "entitled" people to get their checkbooks out and pay more taxes.
4)There is no reason why a landlord need to be a slumlord and not keep up with minor/major repairs on their investment properties.

You are absolutely right. It will be great for our country to teach an entire generation to collect unemployment as long possible. Who cares as long as you get free stuff and the rich people pay more taxes. The true American dream... Living at somebody else's expense.

Also if a homeowner is on welfare then I guarantee that their house is not up to code, therefore they should be classified as a slumlord. If they have money put aside to deal with the repairs, at a moments notice, that are necessary in homeownership; then they do not need welfare. They are defrauding the system. But who cares as long as you get your money for not working. More taxes for people with jobs!!!

If you live in Allentown please contact us. We will assist you with the steps to take and assist you with the issues you are having. Don't count on just contacting the city and for them to do anything without us involved. www.taofallentown.org

Not everyone that rents is on welfare. I rent and I am not on welfare. Not everyone has the credit or money to buy a house.

You obviously don't know the laws and rules of renting. You can't just move out or not pay rent. There are steps and procedures you must take to do that which we do help the renter with. It is not okay for landlords to let their properties deteriorate or not have their properties up to code. There's no excuse for it. Landlords need to take care of their properties and their responsibility has a landlord. People shouldn't buy properties and rent them out if they aren't going to take care of their responsibilities.

Actually you can just leave, just because you have a lease agreement does not mean that you have to live there. If it is uninhabitable, and you leave, do you really think an slumlord would spend money to get a judgement against you if you don't own anything? What's he gonna do, put your clothes up for sheriff sale? A slumlord will never spend extra money doing things he doesn't have to do.

I realize that all renters are not on welfare. In center Allentown, where rents are lowest, is the area you are targeting. A vast majority of the renters there receive public assistance. Don't you see the correlation between these so calls slumlords and people on public assistance? Don't you think that the people who live in the apartments contribute to the condition of the property?
People shouldn't try to get the cheapest apartments available and then be surprised and upset that they are not up to code. Look in the mirror and take responsibility for putting yourself in that situation to begin with. It's easier for people to be lazy, live at the lowest cost possible and blame others; then to work more and live in a better environment.

Yes you can leave if the home is uninhabitable and declared uninhabitable by the city. However that's not what I was referring to. I was referring to a rental property that is habitable but is having issues that the landlord is refusing to fix. Only certain code violations make properties uninhabitable.

We are not just targeting center city. We are a tenant association for the whole city and every single part of the city. Yes some renters do contribute to the condition of the property but some also rent without doing anything wrong and then because of the landlord have to deal with living in a property that isnt up to code. Yes there are legal options which is one thing we educate renters about.

Bottom line is landlords need to be held responsible for their properties and actions as well as the renter. Again we do not support renters who dont pay rent for no legit reason or damage property. If your going to own and rent property then take care of your property and stop trying to find a way to get out of doing so or putting the blame on the renter.

I have mold in the basement, bathroom, upstairs and in my kids closet. There are obviously issues with the house I am renting as far as the roof and basement and nothing has been done about it.
I am behind in my rent because I had spinal surgery so I am awaiting a disability case so I am conflicted about complaining
I have been here 5 years so its not like I am new and I have always been honest with my landlord.
He tells me sparky it with bleach but it keeps coming back, there are huge black spots of mold that keep coming back I am concerned about the health if myself and my family.
What rights do I have and who can I call?

Unfortunately, right now there are no federal, state, or city laws regarding mold. The only way the city will get involved is if the mold is being caused by a structure issue.
