I'd be more concerned with the police officers who use unmarked cars in place of their personal vehicles for off-duty transportation.

"becoming accustomed to the British driving position was surprisingly easy."

Hey, most boats are steered from the right side.

If the Morning Call enforces the "drive-in-the-right-lane, " like all other PA drivers, we may never receive our newspapers in our boxes.

Perhaps the MC can start delivering inside the door again???

The Morning Call should investigate and check up on the courtesy and safety practices of SOME of its route drivers - and be prepared to be shocked, too. Cars / vans stopped in the middle of a narrow street or road, with both doors wide open so no one else can get by, bright lights often left on to blind anyone else going by, loud voices, music blaring, driving erratically from side to side to deliver, etc., etc.

Time for a course in basic safe driving and common courtesy before letting those dolts out on the road.

Only if the Parking Authority/ Police could ticket them, They park where ever they want in Allentown, they should follow rules just like everyone else.

I have a question. What make and model are the USPS delivery trucks. And who makes them?

The rules as noted by the Road Warrior seem reasonable enough. However when you get behind one of these rural delivery birds it can get pretty nasty. The USPS should mandate that all local mail delivery vehicles be right hand drive.

The USPS is not a goverment agency , went private back in the 70's . They do not insure the trucks ,, employees must pay for the uniforms they wear , they do not pay gas or tires or any other tax! Even with all this they still lose money , if UPS and FEDX didn't pay taxes people would speak up with a loud voice , The tax payers pay the cost of thier taxes and the ever incresing stamp rate.

I work for the Postal Service as a city carrier and I can tell you we inspect our vehicles every morning before we begin our day it is the first thing we all do. And if something is wrong even if one blinker isn't working it is repaired that morning or we have HAVE to use another vehicle. If 1 thing is wrong with the vehicle you cannot drive it. By driving it with a defect you put yourself & the public in danger & assume all liability. So safety is # 1 thats why it is such a big deal when anything happens to a vehicle or person. What safety measures can prevent this & that from never happening again.

Actually USPS is a Government agency. In fact look on our website & it says the USPS is the Only self supporting Government agency. Which means the only money they get is from selling stamps or providing mail services. USPS does not receive tax dollars at all. Employees get an allowance every year that can only be spent on uniforms.

Most rural mail carriers are not contractors. Most are full time USPS employees. We provide our own vehicles and equipment. Driving from the center of the vehicle actually isn't as difficult as people think it is. You just have to learn to do it.

I might add that it's a little known fact that federal law gives all USPS carriers the right of way on every road they are on. I've had more than one run in with oil field crews that believe they own the roads because they have 80000 pound vehicles.

ANSWERMAN, your answers are all WRONG. Of course the USPS pays for tires and gas! I'm a city carrier and I put gas in my LLV once a week at the same station I use for my own car. I use a USPS-issue card to pay for the LLV's gas, and pay the same price as everyone else, including gas tax. How else do you think one puts gas in those vehicles???

Driving a right-hand drive vehicle isn't difficult at all once you're used to it. And the vehicle goes for inspection twice a year, I actually just got mine back all tuned up and clean.

Instead of asking about my postal vehicle having a license plate, you may want to consider asking about how many postal carriers are off the road delivering the mail and are rear-ended or hit head on by the "state inspected with a sticker" vehicles. Many carriers are injured and killed every year by those vehicles in a hurry.
