Full story: The Morning Call

Taxes are usually the last thing Chris Frankenfield wants to think about. ''We usually wait until the last minute,'' the Coplay man said.

At 7.5% unemployment this is hardly a depression...
However, since I was a girl, my mother always said ...

A resession is when your neighbor is out of a job, a depression is when it's you.

Don't worry, the secretary of the treasury, geitner will be lenient to you people that owe taxes, you will probably be able to say you used 'turbo tax' and that is why you didn't pay it. Or you could be like Representative rangel or ex senator daschle and weren't aware that you had to pay taxes.

LOL, don't count on it...it's the old "don't do as I do, do as I say"... The little guy will get thrown in the slammer for the kind of behavior Geithner is guilty of. These types have NO shame and never will, that is way they are so successful in the slime game known as politics.

Politics has a way of being about as hypocritical as can be. Who should get tagged with this hypocrisy? Surely not the anointed one, that the MAJORITY voted FOR...now there's another hypocrisy for you.

Getting a Refund?

You are an idiot. And are probably an Obama voter - expecitng the Government to 'take care' of you. How's that working out for you so far?

A tax 'refund' is simply an interest-free loan to the Government. And now California is simply confiscating your overpayment ("because they can")

No one should ever get a dime back - it only makes sense to OWE at the end of the year. Everyone, especially the 'poor', should maximize their deductions (and, yes, there are legal limits) to minimize their payment through the year.

Go figure, the IRS did an audit of my '06 returns -- that year I paid almost 18K in taxes. Can you believe they hounded me for an additional $136.00, that was not claimed interest earned on my checking account.

Yet look at these clowns in D.C. who owed/owe thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes. The IRS really needs to rethink the audit process, what was the point of spending all that time auditing my returns for $136.00? The IRS should not audit people who make less than $50K a year. I doubt these are the biggest tax cheats.

Nonetheless, I filed early. I have a job, but I need the extra money!

Agreed... however remember they have to be within 10% of what they owe in taxes. Anything less then 90% of the taxes is fair game for penalties.

As far as Calif... let that be a lesson to everyone in all 50 states for 2009

1st, this is not a depression and the Morning Call is just trying to get people upset to sell more papers

2nd, how can any of this be happening? I was told that as soon as President Obama took office, I would see an immediate change and the country would be ok again. Sure, I knew it was unrealistic, but that's what the media said would happen so why should I question it? The words the media used were,'Americans breathed a collective sigh of relief.'

Where's my relief?

Try Alka-Seltzer.
Government isn't the solution - it's the problem, as Obama told us during the campaign. As he employes more lobbyists & Clinton era insiders he'll charge the bill to our grandchildren. Putting a tax evader in charge of the IRS send us a signal that they aren't serious about tax laws. If you get an executive position w/government you must pay, otherwise - don't worry about those silly letters they send out. Charles Rangel is another fine example - no fines, just pay what you owe.
Obama pointed @ Bush spending too much on the wrong war. He's going to send the troops to Afghanistan & cut their budget by 10% in the right war. This doesn't exactly sound like "bring the troops home", does it?
No more corporate welfare says the candidate. Billions now headed to the corporations via the "bailout".

You don't pay someone $1,000 to detail a car worth $500, do you?

Damn, next time do it yourself.

I love H&R Block - but then, I got back over $5K (Yes I work, no, no welfare)

You are right, for most situations. You do have to be kind of thick to let the government hold on to your money interest free as a proxy for real self imposed savings. However, one thing keyed me in to this guy's situation. He has held nothing but part time or temp jobs for the past year. There is a tendency to overpay taxes when you are in this situation. The part time employer tends to take out the maximum. I am not usre how much lee way you have to change that depending on the nature of that part time and temp job.

Here's another situation. I got a severance package quite a few years back from a lay-off. The corporation took out 50% for taxes (I tried to recoup it at the time the severance check was cut to no avail) and I had no way to regain it until I filed my taxes the January!

It is brutely clear based on your post you are not very bright.

Anyone who gets a sizable refund is either not making enough money, or not very financially savvy.
So as a result of your apparent boastful nature, you are unknowingly flaunting your ignorance.

So if I'm you, I would not speak of a large refund around anyone other the dolts I am certain are impressed with your financial wizardry!!
