I have not heard anything about LA Fitness, but I recommend trying the Y. The new and expanded Wellness Center opened today. The Center has a lot of space and is filled with very modern equipment.

It's a total rip off @ the YMCA. All othr gyms are cheaper than the Y. The average working/middle class family can not afford to join.Yet people getting everything else for free get free or subsidised there. So you basically get 2 groups there, the people who are doing very well and the free-loaders.

The Y is a very affordable gym. A full-time membership for one adult is $41/month. That comes out to just over $1 per day and you sign no six-month contract.

I think you have to pay $125 or $150 up front for a "start up" fee. Pretty sure it's just a one time thing though.

The Y has a setup fee that includes the first two months of membership. We have a family membership. Before that, we had program memberships so my kid had a reduced rate in swimming and gymnastics. Compared to other gyms (and I've been a member of another in town), they have free babysitting while you work out, free exercise classes (like Zumba) for full members, free family swim every day, free family friendly events and they invest their money in more facilities instead of lining the pockets of some out of town corporation. In the past few years, they have expanded to a new gym/spin room, expanded parking, new arts classes with the Stauffer Memorial program, and now the expanded Wellness Center. The Y has problems because it's trying to do so many things, but really, it's the best deal in town. And everyone is super nice - staff and members. Not an employee, just a satisfied member.

Joe has been outed as a freeloader by several people on topix.

He supposedly lives with his father and doesn't work because he's better than the average person who does.

The Y is another out of town corporation. If you wanted to keep your money local you would go to Work Out Plus or another locally owned exercise place, they are local businesses.

Work Out Plus ripped me off years ago. I will never go back there. I value well run, clean and professional business practices along with keeping my money local.

The Y is a world wide organization, but most of the money raised goes right back into local facilities and programs. How have other gyms invested in the community lately? Expanded facilities? Any blood drives, food bank or coat collections?
