I usually don't read these, but after reading majority of this post.. It is sad to see how people put each other down all the time. No not everyone in Delta County is like that. Don't blame a whole town, city,or state for the bad mouthing that a certain few people do. Every town, city, and state has people that do that.. that's just that. We are supposed to be helping each other and setting good examples for those that look up to any of us. I'm praying for this town and I know there are a lot of wonderful people still in this town and that is what keeps my hopes up about this town. So before putting down a whole town, city, or state, look in the mirror and make sure your not one of those people first. I don't know the truth about Mark, but it's also not my place to judge that because if he is guilty of it then karma will catch up.

I couldn't agree more with the comments above. In rural areas there will always be small-town politics to deal with. However, I have never seen as much gossip, back-stabbing, and cut-throat mentality as I've seen in Delta County. Sheriff Bassham's situation is a prime example of a good person "going down" for the sake of another's vengence. It truly is juvenile. It takes quite a pessimistic approach for one to want to put others down in order to raise themselves up. I agree that Sheriff Bassham made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The law is the law and I don't necessarily think that his mistake should be completely ignored. However, when we have a government (at all levels) that will chase a crime such as this over murderers, rapists, drug trafficing, embezzling, and many other sorts of "media-attention-drawing " crimes commited by law enforcement personnel, it really raises a red flag! Our justice system doesn't always account for a person's character. I believe that selfish, evil people in Delta County have abused our justice system to hurt Mark Bassham. It's shameful to me that the local government is allowed to function in this manner. To counter this on-going problem, each citizen of Delta County needs to wake up and vote on the officials that will make a POSITIVE impact in the county. If enough RIGHT decisions are made, it will eventually weed out the negative, backwards-thinking mentality that is currently in office.
That sounds like a great idea.

Although these comments are old I can't help but comment. I know several LE officers in Hopkins County and with the cattle raisers association that know Bassham. He was offered the job in Delta county after Benny Fischer died. However, he was about to be unemployed and he actively began inquiring about the position immediately after the death of Sherriff Fischer. Everyone I know in LE that knows Bassham will tell you that he is a nice guy, but that he is not trustworthy. The charges that were filed against him were merely the tip of the iceberg. He committed several other offenses that were not filed because everyone that knew about them in Delta county "didn't want to get involved". He probably owed half of the county's residence money when he went down. There is no telling how much money was never impounded when making arrest. Bassham had a gambling problem. This problem motivated him to lie and steal. He was/ is no different that the criminals he was put into officer to capture. He should never have worked in LE. Those of you that think he was so great really should call everyone that knows him especially in Hopkins county and check in to some of the situations he was involved in. Some will leave you with more questions about his character. He deserved to go to jail, and honestly he deserved more time that he received.

Hi pictures and documents!
I keep hearing that Mark took money from the Sheriff's Department but, I haven't seen anywhere that he was ever charged with taking money or brought before a grand jury much less tried for stealing. I'm sure that if there was any money missing the County Auditor would have found it when she audits the books. From what I understand the County Auditor is on top of everything that goes on in the Courthouse and that nothing gets by her.
I've also heard that the Auditor is so strict that some of the people in the courthouse are trying to get rid of her. I've heard that she is accused of running an Income Tax Return preparation business out of her office in the courthouse! Some people will say just about anything just to get something stirred up!
I've also heard that people think that she comes to work late, goes to lunch early, comes back from lunch late, and leaves her job early at 4:00 pm even though she is a county employee and is supposed to work from 8:00 to 5:00 every day like every else. Well even if she does that I'm sure she gets more work done in the 4-5 hours that she works, that she gets more done than the one's in courthouse who "ride the clock" 8 hours every day and don't ever get anything done. Besides if all of that was true I'm sure the County Judge would do something about it.
Pictures and Documents, if you are typing a report I wish you would post it on here for everyone to see instead of saying you have all of this 'proof' and not ever telling what all of this 'proof' is.
It is because no one wanted to get involved. The county judge and county attorney at the time were just as worthless. They knew, but looked the other way whole that sorry excuse for a sheriff screwed the people of delta county. These criminal offenses should have been handled those the people of delta county elected to handle them, but they were scared or something. The only charges he faces were somewhat minor federal charges. If he would have been prosecuted locally and convicted he would have served much more time.
