If you care about the Meal a Day center, be at the Commissioner's Court meeting Monday May 23rd at 9:00am. Brookshire is planning on closing the Meal a Day center. We can't allow this to happen. This is a real threat, it's on the Court's agenda

Herb is out of touch with life.

He takes direction from Pam Derr.

Maybe it's not just him or her wanting to shut it down. It may be lack of funds to keep it going. I for one do not know all or any details about it.But it will be interesting to see what happens and why. If it is lack of funds causing it then I completely agree with it. It is hard to keep something like that going without money. Or if there is something else they can do without to keep it going I'm in support of that too. But if there isn't any money from anywhere then it makes sense to close it.Just my opinion until I hear more facts. I'm not bashing anyone or supporting anyone here. I just want that to be known.

Of all the programs the County contributes to, this is one that definitely needs to be funded. I don't know all the specifics, but a large portion of the finding comes from ARK-TEX council of governments, so it can't be a huge draw on the County Budget. Besides it provides a meal a day for the elderly citizens of Delta County. People on fixed incomes. In some cases, it might be the only meal they get.

It's not just the meal a day that good ole Herb is going after. He's gonna try to shut down the jail and ship the prisoners to Franklin County (at $45 per day). He wants to have Hopkins County dispatch for Delta County (we will pay for 4 dispatchers at $38,000 per year each) and he wants to default on the jail payments and let the creditors repossess the jail. But, he's good at that in his own business background.

I for one know what it can mean to get meal assistance. I once had to have a home health nurse and these meals provided after a near death accident. Some people depend on these programs. It is the only meal some older people get a day. For some older people opening can goods and cooking is a challenge. These meals provide healthy meals to them. If you want to cancel something - take away coffee service and other unneeded expenses. Learn to buy coffee at the store. Miss the days when communities cared and took care of their senior citzens.

Can you picture how much crime will go up in Delta County, if the S. O. is closed down. The response time would be a long time when something bad happens. It would open a flood gate for anyone to be able to still, more drug deals, etc. Just think 30 min. time compare to maybe 10 now!

Someone said Herb won a thousand dollars and a new tv at some county convention he went to. Maybe he could donate that to the Meal a day and help out some.

I don't think that he has the power to shut down the s.o. or transfer inmates to different counties. I would say that would be a state ruling not a county decision. If it is I would also think it would have to be voted on by citizens anyway. But all or nearly all of the county budget problems could be solved if they enforced laws better. What I mean by that is instead of giving warnings for traffic violations. Give expensive tickets and enforce warrants if they are not paid. Same goes for deliquent taxes. If people don't pay their taxes they lose their home or face time in jail. Or they can easily get rid of drug problems in this town including theft if they made the inmates start working for their time instead of sitting around waiting on a trial. They could use the part of the land they use to put their so called evidence equipment....And make it into a garden and if the inmates want to eat they have to work. I think too much emphasis is put into humane treatment of people. I'm not saying turn them into slaves or beat on them and so on. I'm just saying that there was a time in this world when you had to earn your keep. That's my solution anyway. Eventually the people causing the problems will want to stay clear of trouble once they see how it is having to work instead of steal or sell drugs. But back on topic, I don't think we will have to worry about jail closing down any time soon. As for the meal a day program. Why cant the people of the community start donating money to help the people out? Or find out what it will take to keep it going from Herb Brookshire instead of just sitting back waiting to see what will happen?

Teague and Brookshire owe their political lives to Pam Derr.

What she says goes.

What to do with the jail is a County decision. The state regulates how it is run, but the Commissioner's Court has the final say. However in this situation, the Commissioner's haven't been consulted by Brookshire. Two Commissioners (Moody & Brantley) will oppose shutting it down. The other two, who knows. Pool blows with the wind, Templeton hasn't got a clue. It it's a two-two tie, Brookshire breaks it. Also, the Sheriff is opposed to the whole idea, and hasn't even been consulted by Brookshire. Brookshire thinks he's been elected boss of the County. Maybe he'll learn.

Whatever Herb won should be given to the county, since it was the countys $ to send him. The money and sell the gift and add that money to these programs.Save programs that are needed.Cooper is full of selfish people,so i wont hold my breath.

What a bunch of misinformation. I personally go to all the commissioners court and this is all a buch of wind except from "Jimmy" which is apparently is not from Athens, is from Cooper and has an agenda against Herb,Gerald, and Pam. Apparently he got his panties in a wad over the last election and doesnt know how to act like a big boy. Herb did win some door prizes at a meeting he attended for training but nothing like people are saying. Not thousands of dollars or a big screen tv. He brought it all up at court. They never said anything about shutting down the meal a day, only that it was costing more than it was suppose to when it changed locations and just wondered if there was some way for others to help share in the expense. No mention of shutting it down was ever uttered. The court including Herb knows how important it is to some people. Herb listens to the people and has his supporters but no one tells him what to do. He spends many hours studing and looking for the right thing to do for the county which is much more than most have done in that job. As far as the jail, Herb consults with Gerald and it is not a suprise to him nor is it being rammed down his throat. We would not be without a sherriffs office, just a jail and that would be a temporary thing. Previous people made a really bad deal on a bad building and the court is just trying to get us out of it. And not by defaulting by the way, we lease it and its in the contract we can stop. You dont have to believe me or any of these others guys. Come to court on every other monday at 9:00 AM and see for yourself what is happening in your county. Its much better than listening to people that just wants to stir up problems at the expense of their county.

Teague and Brookshire owe their political lives to Pam Derr? Are you kidding? I know a lot of Republicans who would disagree with you. She had one vote, just one. Many Republicans worked very hard to help get their candidates elected.

Well just a note to say, Herb thinks he is the boss at the Court House, but he is nothing, just one vote on the Court, course as you said Rip wants to be boss but is so dumb he cannot find it with both hands, and Wayne Poole, well he is being used by Pam Derr, Brookshire, and Teague, but he will find out one day when it is to late. The money Wayne spent in the Court House without aprovel is going to catch up to him soon. Any one seen the black car with the two men in black suits lately, well some us has and we know what kind of questions they are asking.

Sounds like soembody else with the same propaganda that commented above. We see that your agenda against all the Republicans is obvious. Get out and work for your candiates would be much more beneficial to the county than misinformation and wrong comments.

Yes SRJ the question they are asking you is,"Would please look directly into the little flashy thing?" They are also known as the Men In Black. Did they have a pug dog with them? And was the dog talking to you? Did you feel funny after you saw them? How many times did they flashy thing you? Are you aware of the aliens that reside here in Delta county? Are you an alien? Get a life already. If the feds want to know if anything is going on. They go directly to the source not random citizens to ask for information. And if they are directly at the source, they already have their information. And I can assure you the info. doesn't come from random citizens or off of any blog. And to Jadams777, I agree with what you are saying. It sounds as if your information is legitimate.
