I want all of our community to know, we have a system that has failed to protect our kids. My Daughter was babysitting for 3 children in this community, at their house I might add. These were people we trusted, the mother works for a Child Protection Service in Cookeville.(Doesn't that further say to you that you should be able to trust in this person. Well several months ago she went out of town for the weekend and my daughter was to babysit her 3 adopted children in their home over night. She has children that are her biological kids that are adults. Specifically one of her sons is 24 years old and married. However he decided to come down to visit but he was supposed to go out that evening. Instead he stayed with my daughter and the other children and played a drinking game with them...starting only with pepsi while the younger children were awake. But once they were put to bed he decided to give my daughter vodka shots playing a game that had consequences...if she lost she had to take a shower with him and have sex....after he asked her if she was a virgin. Well needless to say she lost the drinking game they were playing and he then decided this 15 year old child had to pay up. He showered her and then had sex with her...Then telling her that she can't tell anyone because he would get in trouble...he thanked her for him being able to take her virginity....he even told her that he was sorry he didn't last very long. He took total advantage of her. When we found out the details which are much more then what I am putting here we decided that he needed to be arrested. He raped my daughter!!! I was at first concerned about his mother and father..I had so much respect for them and was worried that they might face problems because it happened in their home. So I tried to go to his mother first. My mistake...she helped him by getting him a lawyer...well today I met the man who raped my daughter for the first time, only to find that his mother stood by his side with a smile that he was being able to plea to simple assault because he had no previous record. He was charged with Contributing delinquency to a minor and statutory RAPE...and because he had no previous record he got nothing more then simple assault. So now he can rape again.....and here she was smileing...she has young girls in her home and she was smiling. Maybe she draws these girls in for him to have is my thoughts now. KEVIN BUTTERWORTH RAPED MY DAUGHTER AND DOESN'T HAVE TO REPORT AS A SEX OFFENDER. HIS MOTHER KAREN BUTTERWORTH WORKS AND HAS TAKEN AN OATH TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM SUCH THINGS...YET THIS HAPPENED IN HER HOME....and today she had the nerve to say to me back away and I was out of line saying anything to her son. APPARENTLY SHE HAS NEVER BEEN RAPED...AND APPARENTLY SHE DOESN'T PROTECT CHILDREN...IS THIS THE WOMAN YOU WANT MAKING DECISIONS FOR WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY. Will she be smiling when Kevin Rapes another child that is in her care. THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED US BY ALLOWING A RAPIST TO GO VIRTUALLY FREE...HE GOT 1 YEAR PROBATION 40HOURS COMMUNITY SERVICE AND $100 FINE. THE BUTTERWORTHS ARE A DANGER TO OUR COMMUNITY PLEASE EVERYONE HOLD YOUR DAUGHTERS CLOSE TO YOU WHEN YOU SEE KEVIN BUTTERWORTH OUT!!!!

What a bastard. Maybe the next girl he tries to pull this sh*t on beats the hell out of him.

As for CPS, they are freaking worthless. I knew this drunk lady that worked for CPS. She would comment on how she enjoyed having the power to take people's children from them and how she could get away with anything because she knew judges in three different counties. She got fired finally, but nobody ever knew what for.

Great idea! Go to the media. Get CNN involved they have helped with a lot of issues like this (Nancy Grace, etc) Might get justice for your daughter yet. Please whatever you do; DO NOT give up!! Never give up; never surrender.

Neither CNN or Nancy Grace would go to Celina to cover something like this. Only way they would go out there was if a 10-headed baby was born.

From the first posting it says that his mother got him a lawyer and if she does work for CPS she should loose her job for not reporting the entire thing to them to have it investigated.

In my opinion he should at least have to register as a sex offender. Good luck.

If your daughter knew beforehand what the score was and still went along with the game how can you call it a rape. Sure she's underage and the guy wasn't too swift to mess with her but from your own account she sounds like she was going right along with him.

Fifteen year old girls are not innocent little angels anymore. She too should receive half of the blame. If this girl was mature enough to be babysitting then she was mature enough to know what she was doing.

Statutory age limits for consensual sex either need to be lowered or removed. A girl initiates the sex or is a willing partner then the guy is branded for life? Why is the juvenile female or juvenile male not held accountable as well as the accused.

Not trying to be mean or ugly but I think the girl is equally responsible.

Yes there is an age discrepancy. However, the girl willingly went along with him. I don't know either party or anyone involved but I can still be objective. I have to disagree that his mom should be fired. Since her son is not a minor then she is not responsible for his actions and would not be much of a mother if she didn't stand by him. Minors need to be taught that they too must act responsibly. Wasn't at all difficult to state my thoughts without name calling and insults.

Good point and I agree about young teenage girls not being nearly as innocent as folks like to think. That still does not excuse his behavior and he is guilty of statutory rape unless and until the law is changed and the age lowered. I happen to have known a few due to the fact that I have 2 boys, one is no longer a teenager but the other still is. The problem with many teenage girls is, they know what they have has an effect on boys but they have never been properly coached on how to control the resulting situations that occur. Too many think they can play and run away. It don't always work out that way. But what do they care? If it backfires, it's the guy who gets in all kinds of trouble and they sit and laugh so yeah; lower the age to 15 since parents cannot seem to properly educate their children on the inner-workings of sexual desire.

She could have said she didn't want to play the game and could have called her parents to come get her. She didnt have to go along with it. And no offense, but you only got her side of the story to go by...i know alot of girls that scream rape because the guy either turns 'em down or has sex with them and leaves 'em.

None the less, it is a sad story that shouldn't happen to anyone, and if it really was rape he needs his balls cut off and fed to him

We have two sets of twins and then 2 that were not twins. They are all between 13 and 18 years of age now. We have always talked openly about what is sexually appropriate and inappropriate as they were exposed to it such as through music, videos, peers, etc. They all understand about statutory rape and responsibility and we are praying they always remember what they have been taught. We have witnessed the way too many young ladies act toward young men and all to often the parents witness it as well but just smile or else ignore their daughters' behaviors. Young girls will also lie in a flash about their age and try to initiate sex. We can't be sure what our kids do when no adults are present but they all six know that they are responsible for their actions and that if they do something wrong we expect them to be adult enough to own up. I agree with every word you wrote and those are points that we've tried to make sure our kids understand thoroughly. Our girls have been taught not to use their female charms in an inappropriate manner such as teasing boys. They are all fully aware of disease and pregnancy. If they continue as they are now we won't have any problems like the one on this thread.
In closing I would like to say that I can't help wondering what the young man's story is. Some on here are saying that he got a slap on the wrist but we have only heard the girl's side. What he did was not a smart thing to do and is legally statutory rape but I would still be interested in hearing his half of the story. I don't feel the young lady is responsible enough to be babysitting if she willingly gets inebriated and has consensual sex while she is supposed to be safeguarding young children whether asleep or awake.

I'm glad you and your spouse have taught your daughters these things and of course there are still some good parents out there like yourself. However; know that you are an endangered species and we simply can't have young men's lives being ruined because the GIRL didn't know how to keep it in HER pants!! O ooh! Bet that remark will bring some comments. Anyway, I'm glad somebody out there in the parent world understands that this is indeed a problem and we need to do something about it. Perhaps require girls to have mandatory sex counseling if something like this happens and let the guy off easy for a first offense. If he does it again; then nail him! I don't know. Can't really think of a good solution at present. They all stink in one form or another but whaddya gonna do?

whoever is thinks that this is not that guys fault needs to pull there heads outta there asses for one he is contributing to a minor by bringing alcohol for a 15 year old girl to drink. how would you feel if this was your 15 year old girl what was takin advantage of by a 24 year old guy it dont matter if it was consensual or not can take the alcohol outta the situation and it more than likely would not have been consensual but even if it was its still statutory rape maybe you need to watch some more dateline nbc this guy is sick in the head to go over there and try to have sex with a 15yr old girl so my opinion is the guy needs to keep it in his pants and he should be in prison and let big bubba take advantage of him

Both parties made their own decisions and are equally responsible. They both knew what they were doing and they were both willing.
I cannot see where the mother did anything wrong nor do I understand why anyone would think she should lose her job.
That sexual encounter was discussed beforehand and no force or coercion was used.
Both parties knew how it would end---in bed.

I wish that the courts would use more discretion in all these cases. If this had been a 10 year old girl and a 24 year old man I would feel differently but 15 year old girls today don't have the innocence of those 30 or 40 years ago. Very sad how many are sexually active before they even hit their teens. I can not justify branding a man for life over consensual sex as in this case.
