Hello. I'm considering enrolling at Tennessee Tech and moving to Cookeville. We have a 2 year old child, so our main focus is finding a SAFE place to live near campus. Is that a reasonable expectation? We were looking at apartments on North Franklin Avenue and West 4th Street. Any info on these areas?

Also, does anyone know what the employment opportunities are like for CNA's in cookeville?

Thanks!

Cookeville is a great place to live and raise children. Like any place, there are bad areas. From 1st street to about 10th on the west side of willow ave is pretty sketchy. Especially around 4th and Franklin. I lived on 4th for a couple years, and it was pretty common to have crack heads knocking on the door in the early hours of the morning, wanting to bum money, cigarettes, or sell something they just ripped off. It's not terrible, but it's as bad as it gets for Cookeville. If I were a woman with a child, I would probably find a better neighborhood. There are lots of good areas near TTU, but that isn't one of them.

The people here suck, everyone is an ass and has an attitude problem. I moved here in '98 and tried to fit in, but I'm not an asshole so I never will. Stay away, drug addicts galore, no jobs and trashy, disrespectful, classless people everywhere. I have a great job an hour and 20 min away, that's how bad this place is.

Thanks for the info! I was wondering why the apartments there were only $400 a month...

Any info on Rice Circle or Stargazer?

Those 2 place suck. Anywhere near TTU is a crap hole. You just have to check out the neighborhoods for yourself, but I would be more than happy to give you my opinion as you select places. Basically anywhere you would pick around here is prone to a break in, usually during work hours when everyone is earning a paycheck and the drug addicts are out stealing your shit.

Unfortunately, in this economy & society, there are druggies and thieves everywhere. I live 3 hours east of you, in a tiny town of 750 people, and we still have the same problems here.

From what I've seen online, Cookeville's crime rates are very close to or even below the national average.

Perhaps it would be safest to just live on campus, spring for a security system, and purchase renters insurance?

In my opinion, Cookeville is a very nice place to live. I have been here for three years, and I love it. People are very friendly, and there are adequate shopping places and a variety of restaurants and fast food. Tech has a very low crime rate as far as colleges go, not much violent crime there, just some thefts, etc. I think you will find this a better place to move for school with a small child, than for instance, Murfreesboro, which has a higher crime rate overall and also at MTSU. Good luck with your plans. I would contact the sheriff's office and ask them which apartment complexes have the lowest and highest crime rates before leasing.

I forgot to say that CNAs seem to always be in demand in this area.

Have you visited Cookeville? Or are you just going off what the internet says? If you want to go to tech, then go for it. If you hate the town once you graduate move out to a better town, who knows you may love it there.

I own apartments off of Stevens near Walnut. Charge just over $400 a month, nice enough neighborhood, owned it for 3 years, some tenants have been there for years, some just a year then move out. Haven't had a break in, never had to call the cops. Cookeville is a nice place to live. You just have to be picky about where you live.

I guess it would depend on what you're willing to pay, and how many rooms you need. There are definitely some sketchy places in Cookeville. Just check out apartments before you pick. You'll know if a neighborhood is sketchy or not.

Anyways, Tech is a pretty good school, and no ideas on CNAs. I'm sure it won't be too hard to find somewhere close.

Just don't work for CareAll as a cna And you will be fine. Hospital is your best bet in this town for the money paid and all of that. People here are nice a lot of college students here. And Yeah we some not so bright people here, but every town is like that. Stay away from 18th street. Bad part of town for sure. We also have a lot of great schools for your child if your here during that time of your childs life.

I've been here for a few years, and wish I would've moved somewhere else. I laugh hard when people say cookeville people are friendly. They are to each other, but not "outsiders." We outsiders have grown Cookeville and made it what it is, profitable and thriving. The locals don't take too kindly to us, but they love our green. If you have any other options, I'd choose some place else. Our newspaper is filled daily with new meth busts, and adults raping our children. Any town, USA is always looking for CNA's. Look further

It depends where you move..

Anywhere near Tech, this person is absolutely correct. The entire block near TTU in Cookeville is known for more rapes, murders, meth labs, robberies, drugs, etc; and honestly it is a horrible place to live.

However, I've lived in Cookeville 25 years now and must admit, the other parts of Cookeville are very nice, most people are friendly and helpful, and it is a great place to live, work, or go to school.. You just have to be careful where you live to make sure it's not like Dixie, Lee Ave, Washington, etc; and that area..

Good Lord, WHY? Are you just looking for a reason to ruin your family's life not to mention your own? If you DO enroll at Tech, make plans to get out as soon as you finish. This is a small town, with small ideas and small talk and small minds. Racism abounds, as does the clique-ish kind of behavior you saw in high school. In fact, a lot of people who went to high school in Cookeville married their high school sweethearts and never left. Does that tell you anything? They've never been anywhere, never done anything, and don't want to hear about those who have. You can fully expect difficulty getting a job based on the nepotism and good ol' boy mentality that pervades. Never mind about employment laws and EEOC - that can be easily circumvented because if you file a complaint, WHO'S GOING TO HEAR YOUR CASE? That's right baby - a relative, a friend from high school, or a relative of somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody. For a community who's terribly worried about "what people think" - they're surprisingly not too worried about what YOU think, and therefore have no qualms putting the screws to you, because there's no one - NO ONE - to call them on it.

How do I know this? I lived here for ten years, and it NEVER CHANGED. IT NEVER CHANGED, and IT NEVER WILL.

Go ahead and take advantage of all Tech has to offer - THEN LEAVE, AS FAST AS YOU CAN, and go somewhere progressive, open-minded, and tolerant.

If you don't believe ME, just watch this board a little bit longer - you'll see what I'm talking about, and watch the board for Murfreesboro and see what kind of brou-ha-ha they're cooking up for the folks who want to build the Mosque in that county.

Just read for yourself and see what kind of activity is being "suggested" as a "remedy" for the mosque - the most God-awful hillbilly-backwards nonsense you will EVER be subjected to, based on incredibly levels of ignorance and fear.

This is how they treat not just "outsiders", but EACH OTHER.

But hey - don't take MY word for it - just read. Read. Read. Read.

You'll soon see.......... what I mean........

My husband and I just moved to W.4th a few mos. ago and we haven't had any problems. We are expecting our first child next month. Cookeville seems like a nice enough place, most of the negativity we've encountered has been mild, definitely not enough to worry about, the neighborhood is surrounded by some low income homes but we haven't experienced anything as bad as we did in Knoxville. Good luck on ur choice!

Aren't you the same person who ("Kerrville TX") has been in every thread talking about how great California is and how bad everywhere else is?

Ah.. It all makes sense now how you say they "don't want to hear about it" because you're one of those righteous loudmouths that try to push your ways on everyone you meet and walk around like your sh*t doesn't stink.

This town is a very nice town, most everyone I work with is from another state than here, and most everyone you meet here is from somewhere else as well.

The crap she's spewing is lies. There are bad places in EVERY town, this town is no different and has that place too. It is over near TTU.

TTu is a good school, take in all it has to offer. Enjoy the laid back night life, and day life of everyone here as well as all of the good restaurants and hopefully you wont run into this hippy above telling you how to live your life like her from "California"..

Good luck, and I hope it works out for you.

Eh... Now that's where it strays off.. If they were everywhere, the police department wouldn't have time to screw off or sit on the side of the road to ticket 300 speeders in 2 days on 111..

There for the most part is one bad area, L-Block, which is the block attached to T-Mart, Murder Mart, Dixie, and Jere Whitson. The rest of the town is pretty nice and not over-run, however L-Block is over-run, no doubt about it.

They said violent crimes were down, but theft crimes were the ones up. Which shows in the crime reports.
