When it's warmer, I've seen the homeless sleep in Dogwood Park. And I know that the homeless shelter limits how long people can stay there. Where do they go when it's cold in Cookeville?

Is there even a shelter for homeless in this town?

They go to Walmart and hang out in there all night. We have the rescue mission, except to stay there, they actually have to put forth to better themselves. Some of them don't want to. I'd say a lot of them take shelter under bridges like on Spring Street and over the tracks. I see stuff piled up there sometimes.

You can stay at the mission only for a few nights if it is full.

Yes, the limit at the mission is 3 days if I am not mistaken, and I believe you have to have ID. This town isn't really equipped to provide resources to the homeless population. There's a program at Plateau that works with homeless population that suffer with mental illness. Most homeless in this area have make shift camps. It's so sad.

Maybe they travel south to warmer weather.

The mission is 3 nights/days....other than that there is nothing. Some of the local churches will put them up for a few days in a cheap motel. Other than that there is nothing here. We are in foreclosure on our home and pray we don't have to find out ourselves. :O(

There are so many families in trouble like you. I pray you are able to pull through without losing your home.

You are an example of why I am dead set against the United States sending money and supplies to other countries. We should be taking care of our own first.

Why send Christmas gifts to children in other countries when so many of our own children here will not have gifts.

If you will WORK OR HELP YOURSELF AND LET THEM HELP YOU, they will let you stay there past 3 days.. Your 3 day stay ends if you simply wont work, or leave daily to go sit by the interstate and beg in stead of work the job they give you (which pays like $9/hr for helping). They cook full meals, have warm beds, etc; and there is NO REASON why a hobo should not be able to go there and receive help, unless of course they cant be helped, or do not want to be helped.. ie: wanting to be a hobo and get handouts instead of work, or on drugs and wont get clan long enough to be helped.

They must be picky.

They have a range of the lowest of the low, hepatitis carrying needle junkies looking for a warm place to shoot up and things to steal, and then they have people coming in who have lost their home and have a child are struggling to get on their feet.

I would be picky too. That's how they keep it from being an all-night drug house.

Lies? I think not. Unless of course you're a drug user looking to abuse the system, you should have NO PROBLEM letting the rescue mission help you get on your feet, give you a place to stay, and get you a job.
