As Tennessee families paused to give thanks around the dinner table Thursday, one of every six households was getting help from Uncle Sam.

"The new U.S. Census report shows that 17 percent of Tennesseans participated in the food stamp program in 2010, an increase from the 15.3 percent participation rate in 2009." Wow, that is alot. Bet it's even higher now in 2012
"In Tennessee, 24 percent of SNAP households have a household member who is working. Nationally, 40 percent of food stamp recipients have an employed family member, documents show." Another big difference between Tn's and nation's percentage of those with an employed household member. I know the job market is tough, but is it really that hard to find jobs? Serious question BTW. Or do you think we have more welfare trash than other states?

"Essex said a statewide network of non-profit outreach providers have helped them find families that are eligible and begin them in the program.
"(They) are responsible for providing information, at the local community level, to insure that people are kept aware of the program and their potential eligibility for assistance," she said."

This one I just don't get. Even though it is a non for profit, those people are still getting paid to do that. It is a job. I wonder who funds that? The govt? Do people apply for grants to start their outreach agency? What? And why are we scouting for folks to get assistance? I think everyone pretty much knows about the FS program. Do the outreach programs get funded by the amount of families they sign on? It seems that in just about every govt program they keep spending more so they can keep getting more budgeted. Is that what this is?
