can a parent not drop there teenagers off at a movie theater anymore for a simple movie, without having to worry about them being raped? OMG! surely this "newly" remodeled theater had surveillance cameras around this building! Was this NOT caught on tape? I remember hanging out at the mall when I was a teenager, and they had a mall parking lot security guard. You couldn't even sit in a car without the cop watching your every move! It sucked then, cause I was the teenager, but I'd LOVE for that to be the case now that I have kids of my own! For such a busy place with unaccompanied kids to see movies, why not have a security guard walk around the parking lot? I myself would not want to park in the back lot myself, even if it is lit up!

14-year-old.... Not to state the obvious but this isn't the 1970's... the world is not sweet and innocent.... and 14-year-old children are just that CHILDREN. The movie theater is not a baby sitting facility. My mother never allowed me to go to the movies without her being in the building somewhere until I was 16 and even then it was an issue of calling when I got there and calling as I left. Not excusing the pure nastiness of the male that is accused of having done this but, what kind of mother leaves there child there? What kind of mother isn't there the minute the movie is over to pick up her child? What kind of mother doesn't teach their child not to walk to the car of strangers? And better yet what kind of mother expects a 14-year-old child to have the ability to use higher order thinking skills to realize what "could" happen. I am not saying suffocate but I am saying until that child is 18 it is your responsibilty to be there to make sure that they aren't given the opportunities to make such huge life altering choices.

I agree with you sort of, but I'm sure this mom feels bad enough without you driving that nail into her heart even deeper. I'm not saying she used good judgment in dropping off her kids either. Anything can happen to anyone even in the best situations.

Hmm... I was at the theater Saturday night... had my Glock on my ankle... didn't see anything strange... lots of random teenagers acting like jackasses... reason I hate going to restaurants and the theater on Fridays and Saturdays. If I found out my child when I wasn't around, acted like most of these kids do when left alone, I'd beat some ass old school style. Just read the article on Herald Citizen... Something seems off, but it might just be the skeptic in me. I've heard of too many times where things like this is made up... so I'll just wait for the test results to come back before making any judgments.

Doesn't matter if the child was 14 or 17, it could happen at either age, just as easily. And I agree, either the theater or the police need to keep a better watch on that parking lot. eh me wrote: 14-year-old.... Many fourteen year olds go to ballgames, movies, etc...without parents. She is old enought to go to the movies alone assuming she were actually in the theatre. This little girl met a stranger there and went around to the back of the building with him willingly. She knows better I'm sure but kids think nothing will ever happen to them. I remember kids going behind building all the time with boys they knew and making out. Stupid but they were with boys they knew. This was a strange and I don't know how old. Very very foolish but we are past that now. Now it is time to prosecute the S.O.B. to the fullest extent of the law.
While the girl was definitely foolish, I hope this doesn't became a bashing site for the girl. It is inexcusable what the man did and he should go to jail. I think this probably happened the way the girl said because no 14 yr. old wants to have to tell their parent and the be examined at the hospital. Nor do most 14 yr old girls pick up strangers to have sex since it is hardly a turn on at that age. It is horrifying.

Not bashing the girl at all, but her parents, that's another story all together. Fourteen year old children should be supervised. Sorry, sad but true, even moreso today than in years past when most people were more trustworthy and we knew more of our neighbors than we do now. I wouldn't let a 14 year old go out like that without at least one adult along to chaperone. And no, I wouldn't, becuase I didn't when mine was 14 years old. I agree with eh me, a theatre or other facility for entertainment is NOT a babysitting service, and for more years than anybody imagines, those types of places have been the jumping off spot for lots of "children" trying to act like "adults".

When i was a teenager, Getting droped off by myself at the movies meant two hours of running around town with friends. Make certain your kids are really watching movies when you drop them off, and not "fooling around". And just cause they show you a ticket stubb dont mean they watched the movie either. I see this going on all the time. Hell i used to do it all the time. I kinda miss it sometime.

As you & I are pretty close to the same age, I can agree that lots of times we "went to the movies" or "went skating" meant that we were somewhere else with our friends, doing God knows what. Actually, when I was 13, June 13 1999, I got the bright idea that this guy who worked at Wal-Mart was VERY hot. Well, we had a mutual friend, she called him, he came and got us, and we rode around with him til almost 11 that night. My pager was going off for two hours, he didn't know that we weren't allowed to go with anyone (though, common sense should have told him), and I finally called my mom who met us at Kroger. Luckily, this guy had enough heart to stay until we were safely in her car, at nearly midnight. Ten years later, he's now a police officer... trying to keep this same thing from happening to other kids/teens. I know, because I done it. Just because they say they're at the movies, and have "proof", doesn't necessarily mean anything. Our friends gave us their stubs, or we said "Oh I lost it" or "Oops, I accidentally threw it away with my popcorn" ~ yeah, heard that before?

The newspaper plainly said "A GUY"!!!! I have a 14 year old daughter! 14 year old girls do not make the best decisions. This is a no-brainer! Usaully when I go to the movies with my daughter and her friends I see one movie and they see another. I am in the building. Only thing that could 100% keep her from going behind the building is me sitting right with her and going to bathroom with her as well. 14 year old, 16 year old, or 20 year old....what is wrong with you people? THIS IS WHY IT IS RARELY REPORTED!!!! A guy rapes a girl, and the question at hand is "Where were her parents?" or "Why was she behind the building?" What about "What was she wearing?" Is that next??? How bout this worthless piece of s@#t who raped her? The crime of walking behind a building with a stranger is much less than raping a 14 year old girl. I take my girls to the fair. 14 and 16 year olds. I don't hold their hands. I have taught them and preached about this sort of thing; however, heaven forbid they ever make a bad decision such as this, I hope they never feel like they are to blame. This scum would have found a victim one way or the other. I am saying all this ASSUMING truth in it. I just cannot believe we are focusing more on the girl going behind the building than we are the rape! She walked behind the building with him....that is IN NO WAY an invitation to be raped! The guy is the one with the problem. All parents have to do to make sure their child is at the movies is to pay for the parent/chaperone feature with verizon. Tells you exactly where your child is. Doesn't flag you when your child is behind the building, but does give you the exact address of where the phone is. Call, and if they don't answer, you know they have left the phone at the theater and taken off. I have even had my daughter send me a pic of the movie at the moment. I just don't understand why the victim is under attack in these situations. Come on folks!
