What style are you interested in?

A guitar teacher will teach all styles, regardless what style you're in to currently.

ie: Even if you love death metal, and super fast ripping, chances are that you'll learn blues, country, lite rock, chord progressions, etc; while mastering your rythym, timing, and becoming good enough to play the style you like very well.

Choose a teacher based on their vast experience teaching, not on the choice of music style you want to learn.

Testy, testy.
Although I agree with your perspective, it was only a question and not meant to offend.

Mal Stover all the way. Randy Gouge was THE BEST, but he is in Knoxville now. Mal is an older guy with lots of experience. He may not be able to teach death metal, but that's not what it's about. When selecting a teacher, you should find someone that can give you a good understanding of the basics, and several techniques. Once you develop your ear, you can teach yourself anything you want to learn. Don't go to the guys that just want to teach you a new song every week. That will cost you a lot of money, and progress will be slow. Travis and John at crossroads music are great musicians, but they are young and less experienced. Find Mal, and you will be a better guitarist.

I believe that Mal is still teaching in Algood. Last I heard, he was teaching from home. You should go to Algood Miracles Music, which is on the main drag in Algood, near the police station. Ask the owner, Gary, how to find Mal. He will be able to hook you up, but he will probably try to sell you his guitar lessons instead.

All of this seems to have been concocted to pad Stover's student roster... and pocketbook.
Nice try. I'm NOT buying.

Mal doesn't even advertise that he gives guitar lessons, or even have a "student roster" or anything and really just gives lessons to people who ask..(if he still gives lessons now)

I would say he's probably retired, to be honest.

I know he and Randy used to both teach, and were both revered as the best around.

That's how I found them when I was a kid.

I saw Randy at Miracle Music a while back when they were still open in the middle of Algood. I know he teaches in Knoxville now. He's right down the road from Guitar Center.

John is a good player, and a really nice guy. I think he would be a good teacher, but he is a little young. Nothing wrong with that, but I like experience. That's why I suggested Mal.

Not true. I haven't seen Mal in a couple years. Last I saw of him, was when he came to a gig I was playing at Boswell's HD. Other than trying to help a guitar student find the best teacher, I have no reason to recommend Mal. He is a great musician, who has played and taught in this area for MANY years. He will teach you enough theory to play what you want to play, but not enough to bore you. He is the best choice for someone who is wanting to be a great all-around musician.

Mal doesn't keep a roster, he takes anyone, at any time...

If you ever met the guy you'd see he's not in it to conquer the area...

Just a kind older man who loves teaching.
