Tipping is a very nice gesture. Working with the public can be difficult and unpleasant because of rude people. The employees also run themselves to death and tipping shows that we appreciate them.

True, but I don't think they work any harder than someone at burger king. Do you tip the person for their hardwork at the burger king drive threw? I guess it would be different if they made like 2-3 dollars an hour like at restaurants.

Tipping a server is not about being kind, it's about the fact that actual SERVERS do not make the required minimum wage as an employee of Sonic or other fast-food chains do. The tip, the amount of which is based on perceived server performance, supplements the low wage.

You do not have to tip someone if you feel that they did not provide you the quality of service you feel they should have. This is both subjective (server was polite and helpful, server was bright and cheery, etc.) and objective (food came out within a reasonable amount of time, water glasses were re-filled, orders were placed and delivered correctly, etc.) Tipping does not show, "...that we appreciate..." servers and what they do. It shows that we appreciate servers' effort in providing services.

That is the difference between Sonic and Burger King. You get more service. They also work to get the orders out as fast as they can.Tipping is a courtesy that you would want extended to your wife, mother, sister, daughter, girlfriend etc. You don't have to tip, but it's a nice courteous gesture.

Again, it's not about courtesy, it's in direct relation to the quality of service. I know a lot of servers who think the same thing, that tipping is a courtesy and if you don't tip (or at least tip low) then you're an jerk. They're not a jerk, they're indicating to that they found the service to be below par. And it doesn't matter what the server thinks, in this case, the customer is always right.

As a former employee of Sonic (just not in Putnam County), I must say that your tips are greatly appreciated. Depending on the shift and location, your service and attitude, you can make $5 -$50 in tips nightly, plus minimum wage. What alot of you fail to realize, carhops are working in rain, snow, sleet, or shine. Carhopping is NOT easy, especially when you first start, and its more personal service than Burger King. To those who do tip, THANK YOU!

It's not about service then. Just because someone doesn't walk in and out doesn't mean that they didn't work their hardest to please you. It doesn't mean that they couldn't use that tip to support their family.

I go to sonic maybe 2 times a month and I have never had to wait more than 3 minutes tops.... if you stop ordering 2 of everything on the menu... maybe... just maybe... you can have your food in under 5 minutes

It is just a fast food restaurant like McDonalds or Wendy's. You don't tip there so it never occurred to me to tip at Sonic. They do make minimum wage just like the other fast food places. O'charley's and places like that do not make min. wage as they are paid through tips. However, a friend's child works at Sonic and says she makes about $40-$60 per night in tips on top of her hourly salary. I think that is great if people want to tip but I do not feel obligated to tip at a fast food joint.
