Five 6th graders at Cornerstone Middle School were suspended from school last week over alleged involvement in a pill selling scheme.

Four boys and one girl, all in the 12-year-old age range, were accused of trying to sell pills to other students in the school, and some students did ingest some of the pills, according to Putnam Schools Assistant Director Jeff Comer.

Comer said initial investigation shows that “a group of kids had brought pills from home” to sell at school. He said some of the pills were prescription medicine and some were over-the-counter medications.

“As I understand it, they were trying to sell the pills and they gave some away.”

Cornerstone Principal Billy Stepp and other school officials became aware of the situation and conducted an investigation that led to the suspension of the five students under the Putnam school board’s zero tolerance policy for illegal drugs at schools.

The five students were turned over to the custody of their parents.

Following the suspensions, the students and their parents have the right to appeal that action through the board’s disciplinary hearing system, and in fact, hearings for some of the students are taking place today and through the rest of the week, Comer said.

Students who violate the board’s drugs at school policy may be expelled for the remainder of the school year. any one know the kids

Not only are they dealing drugs, they're also probably thieves! My grandmother was involved in an incident years ago where one of her grandsons/my nephew had been stealing her pain medication to sell at school. We turned him in and also pressed charges against him.

I know the LAW requires that thier names not be released; but WE as parents should know in order to protect OUR children.

Being under 18 should not shield someone from the repercussions of their actions when the crimes they have committed involve drugs or violence.

I hope you aren't planning on home schooling them because your writing skills are appalling.

I am thankful that the principals are taking this seriously. Drugs have been in our schools for a long time but seemed to be overlooked. It comes from the way these kids are being raised. Just look around Baxter and you will see what I mean. Drugs seem to be everywhere these days. The "not my kid" way of thinking is fueling this as well. I think that the kids getting busted a school sends a clear message. This will not be allowed in our schools.
