wondering

#1 Feb 10, 2010
I had a question for you girls or guys that may know. My grandmother has black and light gray hair. She wants to bleach it out where it's all white. She doesn't want the salt and pepper look. This will be a procedure that will need to be done again and again till her hair loses the darker colors. I have colored my hair several times at home, but never used peroxide. I was wondering, what products would be best and how much to use. Thanks!(oh yeah, she DOES NOT want to go to a salon, as she is on a fixed income.) I told her I would research it, and do it for her, as well as buy the products for her, to do it with.

To be honest with you I would not trust peoples opinions on here. I would suggest calling a salon to ask that question. Also you can sometimes get cuts and colorings for free at beauty schools for the students to practice on if she would consider doing that.

i do hair myself and if i were you i would not put reg bleach on her hair. it will cause it to turn orange and will damage it terribly. most salons will not give you any advise because they want you to come to them instead. if i were you i would go to sally beauty supply and get advise from them and do it with something a lot more professional. if her hair was to turn yellow or orange tones, get a violet based shampoo and wash it in it regularly that will help a lot.

thanks! I shop at Sally's anyway. I have noticed it's very hard to get any advice about this subject. My granny just can't afford to go to a salon to do this. If I could afford it, I'd pay for someone to do it for her, but I know this will be an ongoing process, so, I'll stretch my dollar to do it for her. She loves to go to the dances and just wants to be prettier, as do any of us. She's the love of my life, and never asks for anything, so I thought this was the least I could do for her.

i`ve done ALOT of bleach jobs. dont use chlorine bleach thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard.

you need to look up the color wheel and find out which toner you need..because you WILL need it. darker hair usually needs violet or blue toner. i am not sure about grey though.

ive been doing hair for 10 years...its hard on your hair..the toner will ensure you wont have to bleach anymore than you have to. though, achieving starlet white is pretty hard..and hard on your hair if you do it at home.

also..chlorine bleach is poisionous..and putting it on your hair may allow it in the bloodstream. why in gods name someone would leave something on their head that says wash hands immediately is beyond me.

Thank you! Totally agree with the chlorine bleach comments. Probably just someone poking fun at a serious topic.

First of all white hair has no pigment. So to get it white you have to bleach it out till it is white. Then the hair will be fried. So I would suggest to let mother nature take it's course or choose a differt color.

Did not know that. Maybe I need to suggest a light blonde color to her? She's never been blonde before, she may like that.

like i said...you will need toner. toner TONES the color to white. Ive had white hair...i assure you im not bullshitting...and i had black hair.
two bleachings with toner..and i was starlet.
also use silver shampoo. it has violet toner like product in it to keep water from tinging your hair yellow again..but it DOES NOT TONE your hair.

it only keeps the crap water adds to it out that causes discoloration.

do not bleach it alone to acheive white. her hair WILL FALL OUT. my 10 years started with trial and error...and a whole year where when i bleached my hair from med brown to white...without toner..
i didnt get my white..it was like the inside of a banana and if it was wet it was unbrushable because it was spaghetti noodle and was falling out.
after many many MANY dye jobs to see soneone tell someone else to to bleach without toning makes me sad..because if they want theirs to fall out fine..but its horrible to tell someone ELSE to do it.

if youre only dying it a color then fine..but for white i cannot stress the importance of toners.

ill give you a list of products..if you have a sally card youll save a few bucks getting them there.

ill post what i use in a bit.

OMG..... they are just kidding. LOL Do not do this! If you want to bleach her hair I would just get a box color at walmart. Can't get any cheaper than that

I've had a talk with my granny about this bleaching her hair to white, and how it would be alot harder than just doing a light blonde. She's kinda agreed that maybe it would be better for just a real light blonde instead of white. If she wants to do a light blonde, I should get the color and developer (at Sally's), and a toner?

In reference to hey.r u seriously kidding me? I can teach u a thing or 2. Honey a toner will add color to the hair. It will not tone the color to white. And using a silver shampoo with a violet base will give it a violet tone. Daaaa. You had 10 years of trial and error. Ha ha took you 10 years and you still don't know color. I'm really surprised you have any hair at all!

bleach available outside a salon tends to be a little calmer..you can also mix it to be calmer if you know what youre doing.

if your scalp is unhealthy it also causes it to burn...aswell as if its sensitive.

youre suppose to do 1oz to 1 oz..if you have the problems i mentioned try 1oz powder to 1oz developer.
