My dingbat daughter traded him a 94 saturn for a piece of shit 93 something. She was barely 18 yr old. She paid on it 3 yrs and we had to put a motor in it after 3 months. We went to make a payment for her one day and found out she owed over 10.000 dollars on it at 30 % interest. I told her not to pay another dollar and called him and told him to come pick it up. He said he would sue for the diffrence we told him to go ahead we would love to go to court. We never heard from him again. We did not know what kind of deal she had made untilthen

probably hiding from so many people he ripped. You could drive by and tell his lot had nothing but pure junk trashed vehicles. He feasted on the poorest of the poor who had no other alternative,He was rumored to try and have a carlot close to a hill or incline because most cars he sold would at least make it a few hundred feet from the lot when they purchased a car.

Mr. Caldwell is no longer in business on County Farm/Pippin Road. The owner of the building he was using began eviction proceedings in April 2010 for his not paying rent for the building. Also, he did not have a business license from the City of Cookeville to conduct a vehicle repair business or to sell vehicles there. He vacated the premises (with thousands of dollars of cleanup and repair required)in November 2010 and moved his business to 701 Bill Smith Road (corner of Bill Smith Rd & Foreman Drive). However, I understand that he is no longer in business there, either.

If you want to know about Gene Caldwell, go to the court house ask about civil law suits against this man. There will be so many cases against this man that when stacked up it would be as high as I am tall (5'8). And he is a deacon of one of the largest churches in Cookeville. The hypocrisy of some people in this town makes me sick.

He used to be a deacon, but was forced to resign a long time ago. Please do not judge the church for this. As soon as wrongdoing was discovered, he was told to quit the position. No one in the church leadership, or most of the members, for that matter, would ever condone ripping people off.

I know the above to be true as I know the parties involved. It is not speculation or rumor.

I am right about one thing. I sued this man about a year ago and it went before Judge Goolsby and he had to recuse himself because he "serves on the Deacon board" with him. He did not say "served" as in the past he said "serves". I did not name the church by its name because of the nastiness that takes place on the board. There is no reason to connect the Church with him.

I appreciate your comments. However, I checked my files, and as far back as May '07 Mr. Caldwell's name does not appear in the roster, so had already resigned. Thus it's been (at least) more than 4 1/2 years, probably a lot longer, since he resigned his position in the church.

Judge Goolsby misspoke, I guess. He actually resigned as a deacon himself in 2009 over an internal dispute (nothing related to any moral issues), so he would not have meant to say what you quoted "a year ago." It's been almost three years since he left himself.

If you google his name you will find an amazing court of appeals decision NOT in Caldwell's favor concerning a dispute between him and the TN Department of Revenue, pertaining to his "creative accounting" in computing sales taxes to be collected and paid on his repo-ed vehicles. Also, he was evicted from the Bill Smith Rd site a while back, after J & S Construction got tired of him operating there for free, if you understand what I mean.

People, here's the Value Motor Company business model.

Poor folks need a car and go to VMC to buy one. VMC buys an old Chevy at the auto auction for $350. VMC charges at least $350 for a down payment, thus covering their investment in case the deal goes down the tubes. Buyer signs a note with horrific interest rates without reading it (not smart, but there's a reason why they are poop people in the first place).

Buyer happily drives the car off the lot. A couple weeks later it conks out and they call VMC, who tells them they are so sorry and will fix it, just have it towed in. VMC uses their mechanics (who themselves are of dubious reputation) to get the car running again. VMC charges much more than the normal fee for the work and tells the customer, to their delight, that they won't have to fork out any cash. But what he does is add the bill to the outstanding principal on the auto note. This happens more than once, so what you end up with is people paying for years on a piece of junk and never getting ahead. Eventually the car dies completely, the customer quits paying, and the tow truck shows up to repo the vehicle. Either the slipshod mechanics get it running again and the cycle repeats, or, VMC sells it for junk and has made far more money on this piece of junk than the Toyota dealer down the street would make selling a new Avalon.

What he does is probably barely legal, but not moral and ethical.

I have heard rumors about him doing time in prison but have not found records of this. Anyone know? His full name is David Eugene Caldwell.

In case the above link does not come through the Topix filters, it is:

theinfo (dot) org

Just merge that all together and obviously convert the "dots" to a true period.

He used to have his own lots across from the movie theater in Cookeville. Then he worked at that car lot as you go into Livingston. Last I heard he was working at the lot on Willow next to Dr. Jains office across from Wendys. I would not buy a stick of gum off the man.

Gene Caldwell and his wife just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary within the last week or so.

That's one good thing about the man.

Just so you know.
