Try House of Refuge Ministries. They have a school clothing and supplies giveaway this Saturday, 7/14, from 8:00 to 12:00 in the morning. Located off Hwy. 111 across from old Bargain Barn Furniture store. Near Alpha Omega Carpets. There will be signs.

I understand teachers make about as much as i do in a year. Not to mention they get paid all year. And this is nothing to a teacher. BUT when i get a flyer that my child needs a full list plus 19 other kids same thing. I kbow when i went to school i took what i needed myself. But thwy want way more than needed.

What? Teachers don't make that much, but even if they did, they are NOT responsible for providing your child's school supplies, including tissues and the such! Why would you even think they should be?! And the misconception that they get paid all year...no, they earn a yearly salary which is divided into equal checks. They don't get paid summers off - they have already earned the money.

Silver Point Baptist Church always has a back to school bash each year. I'm not sure of the date. It could be next weekend. They give away around 400 backpacks each year to children in the area. There may be something in the paper about it too.

Life Church has a program. Also, the cheerleading team has a food closet. They don't have school supplies, but if your child needs food, clothing, or hygiene items like toothpaste etc, they will supply it and be discreet about it. A teachers hands it out. The cheerleaders do not know who receives help.

Also, this isn't against the person who needs help. That is understandable. However, people complain about having to buy school supplies, but they also complain about paying taxes to help the school. If the school won't can't buy it because they have to cut the budget, SOMEONE has to buy it. Why in the world would the teachers be responsible for providing supplies? They purchase their own supplies such as markers and pens etc. Most also supply items like kleenex and band aids. My son had a teacher who kept a jar full of pens for the kids on her desk, and she was always refilling it out of her own pocket. Do you know how much money that costs? If you are a nurse, do you supply the bandaids? If you are a waitress, do you supply the napkins? Why do people expect teachers to supply things out of their own pockets?

We all know good honest families who feel overwhelmed this time of year. Years ago my mom, who was a teacher herself, came down with cancer- and she reached out for help from the community because she had no other choice. After chemo etc. she was able to return to work for a few more years, and donated school supplies as her way of saying thank-you for the help our community extended to our family.

My advice is for anyone who feels they must defend their need for help with school supplies. You don't have to defend your need for help. People who have donated supplies WANT supplies to go to people who are simply in need. Hard-working families have lost jobs, savings, homes, and people who saved for retirement woke up one morning to find their 401k and IRA accts had lost their entire savings.
Many people close to retirement were let go because of "downsizing." The help is there for people who NEED it--if people thought everyone claiming hardship was a "whiner or a cheat" no one would ever donate. Perhaps those accepting help could keep a lookout for items on their child's list--perhaps items on sale or clearance--and donate items once/if they are financially able.

They usually ask for way too much and half of the stuff requested doesn't even get used and I understand why so many complain about having to provide supplies and all that... I mean look at all of the unused equipment and hardware these schools pad their places with... I mean really? Had to go for the top end iMacs and macbooks? Literally 1400 to 1700 a pop. Yet most get left to collect dust.... Also they get so much money and support from the government what's it gonna hurt to make another grant for school supplies for the whole county? They abuse and waste so much money over at UCDD and other branches in town.... Now they're like whining for us to cram a crapload of supplies into our children's backpacks? I mean our child will only actually USE half of what we got and the rest goes to the teacher or other students. Greedy... Nothing is never good enough...
