Conway – Two people died and a third was gravely injured in a shooting this morning at Army Barracks, a retail store on Route 16 above Conway Village.
An unnamed suspect is on the loose.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Anne Rice released the following statement in late afternoon: "The suspect may still be in the community. The public should continue to take precautions, as the suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous. The police have a description of this suspect as a white male in his early to mid twenties, blonde hair, wearing camouflage shorts, a baseball cap, and light colored shirt. The suspect is believed to be carrying a backpack. The suspect was last seen fleeing the scene. The public is advised that if someone sees a person matching this description, that person should call the Conway Police Department immediately. Do not approach the individual."
A huge contingent of armed police is still walking the roadsides in the Conway area. Helicopter and canine patrols also are continuing.
In early afternoon, before Rice's statement was released, State Police at Troop E Barracks said authorities had "detained" several people. Police also investigated an area campground where they suspect he may have been staying.
Police and prosecutors said late this afternoon that the third victim has been airlifted to the special care unit of Maine Medical Center in Portland. The names of the victims have not been released.
“I was told they were looking for someone described as wearing camouflage shorts, blondish hair, automatic weapon. That’s all I needed to shut down and lock my doors,” said Don Poulin, assistant manager of the New Hampshire State Liquor Store located across the street from the shooting scene. He and four employees remained in lockdown inside the store.
Dick Stevens, who works at Saco Canoe Rental, also located across the Street from Army Barracks, said he was outside his store this morning when he heard two shots about four seconds apart. Stevens, 77, said he turned and saw what looked like a tall, young man with “angular” features running around the north side of the Army Barracks and into the woods.

The vice president of ArmyBarracks told UnionLeader.com that a part-time employee who was refused entry to the store by police this morning saw a body inside. That company executive, Marilyn Brabents, said the store sells camping equipment, camouflage clothing and weapons such as knives, stun guns and paintball guns, but no firearms.
She said the store’s manager usually arrives before the store’s 10 a.m. opening to check inventory and do payroll. No one at ArmyBarracks has heard from him today, although his car is in the parking lot.
Residents of the area were told to evacuate around 9:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. People were milling around a neary strip mall complex, which includes a ShurFine grocery store and six other shops, waiting to get back into their homes.
Fran Duncan, who works about a mile away at the Lamplighter Mobile Home Park north of the village, said state police asked her to call all of the community’s residents and warn them to stay inside as they searched for a man with a gun in the woods. Duncan said the park has more than 200 homes. Many are second homes, about 50 or 75 are now occupied.
Several miles of Route 16 were shut down to traffic.
