The pharmaceutical companies combined are a multi-billion dollar industry, doling out pills like Pez. I do not knock anyone for receiving government assistance when it is genuinely needed, for in these tough times there are very valid reasons why people get aid. But some people do abuse the system and I believe a big part of that abuse entails the use of prescription drugs. Buying, selling, using... and so many overdoses of young people. I blame the government for a big part of this epidemic. They need to enforce firmer rules and regulations for those on Medicaid and the prescriptions they receive. We have this supposed war on drugs which is costing us up in the trillions of dollars, yet nothing will get resolved as long as these pharmaceutical companies and doctors keep shelling out pills like candy. Especially to our youth... What can really be physically wrong with so many people in their 20s and 30s that they need hard drugs and not just a Tylenol?! Can't doctors be held accountable for handing out prescriptions to young ones like they do...

I would guess, mind you I said GUESS, that it could very well be anyone who has to go to our ER here in town for a broken arm or just a bad head cold.

I know for a fact they tend to give you wrong meds without checking you out to the fullest first.

This article is rather lengthy but, IMO, it's worth the read. It's about time some of the enablers are called out.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/...

In case anyone doesn't want to read the article, the first and second paragraphs contain the info of a man in his 30s who gave story after story as to why he needed pain pills. Doctors ended up prescribing him 275 prescriptions over a period of 2 and a 1/2 years. "Sometimes they wrote the patient more than one prescription for the drug on the same day. In a single month, they wrote him 11 prescriptions for Percocet, totaling 734 pills."

Blows my freakin' mind!

Also, two of these doctors claimed they did "NOTHING WRONG" and are "among a small group of doctors who were the top prescribers of tightly regulated drugs in their state Medicaid programs."

I know of a great many young people who have been on medication for ADD/ADHD since childhood, and have grown out of the hyper activity that caused the diagnosis. However, they continue to get the medication and sell it on the streets. Even when I was in high school, I saw other students in the restroom selling Aderol (sp?).

Most of the young people I know who have used drugs, however, aren't prescribed them. They buy them on the streets from people twice their age or older. This may not be the majority, but the people I have heard of.

There are also a lot of elderly people who sell their medication for extra income.
