I think all the "cry babies" putting their two-cents in are probably Visteon boat people thinking they are gonna open back up and give their seniority back ! That or they are pissed off their TAA tuition got them a job at Wal-Mart or having to drive 30 or 40 miles one-way for a big $12 an hour minus $100 a week for gas. Maybe some WCI/ D & M boat people to go with it. Local 2205...you're not gonna get much sympathy on this. It's like this, " Uhhh...BY GOD we lost OUR jobs now it's THEIR turn ! Besides, your pay comes from taxpayers. Taxpayers who ONCE made good money and now work for HALF that amount. Less tax dollars = CUTS. Look at Wisonsin, Their firefighters LOST their collective-bargaining priviliges. Might have taken 2 years, but aat least Urban DID sit down with ya. If it were Wisconsin ( Governor Scott Walker) you would have just been told, " OK you bastards....we are gonna SCREW YOUUUU !! Blah.

Sign me up to be a fireman.$40,000 a year to work a few days a week and have me a second job. Let me sit all day at work and when I get bored we can grill out or go wash my truck. Maybe I can have my wife or better yet...my buddy come and visit me at work. If this happened at normal jobs...most employees would be fired. It's time to save our tax money and get a volunteer dept. This has to be the easiest job there is in this area for that type of money?
You forgot to put girlfriend in there.

I'm none of the above . But spending $11,000 for a "cot" as it was put for the EMT is a bit extraordinary . A cot is for sleeping is it not ? So, the taxpayers of Connedville pay the EMT to sleep . And I am NOT Local 2205 ,nor Local 81 , I am Local 98 . A mayor looking out for the city taxpayers would close all but one fire house for efficiency . And to save taxpayer dollars that could be used to hire more full-time emergency workers , if needed . Most businesses have a sprinkler system . I know of no private residences that have that. Remember that one fire house means one building to heat one water and electric bill and one property tax and insurance payment . And all employees are together at the same place and time with all the various equiptment handy . I know that if my house ever catches fire the fire dept. will stand by as it burns as they did to the warehouse on western ave a few years back when several fire companies were called in to watch the building burn and to contain it . It pretty much burned itself out . But on the bright side the fire cleansed the property of all the nasty chemicals that were there .

The cot isn't for sleeping! It's for transporting patients in the ambulance!!! Come on. Use common sense before you post

Connersville firemen have had it made for years. Some of them because of 24 on 48 off and sometimes 72 haven't been on a fire run in months. Of the 24 on they are entitled to sleep for 8 hours. With at least 15,000 insurance cost and 35,000+ salaries and lucrative retirement it has always been the best job in town. Many of them are on the old contract with 1 dollar a year retirement insurance.

We just don't need anymore fireman, the 24 or so is enough. There is no need to let anyone go and when one retires hire another. There is no need for all this stupid overtime, we have 7 or 8 firemen on duty most of the time and when there is a fire they call everyone in anyway, so the staffing issue is a joke....

For those of you bashing i'll say this once....my man works hard at the station. So what if I stop by to see him for a few mins. He is protecting this town and keeping insurance rates low while setting a damn good example of a man that cares about his city.

He doesnt pay $12-5 a yr for ins, try $350 a month! It's a dangerous job!

?!?!?$350 a month ?!?!? And where does he get that kind of money ? Oh , from the taxpayers . And what does he do for it ? Train and wash the vehicles . The majority of the time he isn't needed . Volunteer firefighters don't get paid to train or fight fires or to wash vehicles . However they do they exact same job as paid firefighters . If he is in a union , he works for the union NOT the city .The union is contracted by the city NOT each individual union employee . If the city managers have a problem with a union employee , their union steps in . 90% of the city taxes go to the employees .The 10% left is usually wasted foolishly .The problem is there is no oversight . Nobody wants to make any changes . I say the Mayor should publicly ask the city employees to volunteer some of their time instead of getting overtime . The police are allowed to set their own schedule , this insures them that when they have a court date it is on their day off so that they get extra pay .You can gripe in topix but until you get involved and attend the council meetings and speakout , it means nothing .

Block and Tackle must be a Visteon boat person or maybe an ex IUE union official who misses getting paid to go to Mousie's on "union business". Back in the day, mayors HARRASSED police and fire. Made them do work at the park, cut trees etc because they had this "free time". Unions ONLY come in when there is a vacuum for them to fill. Good retirement ? Uhhh.....with state budget crunches all over, MAYBE they will get a pension or MAYBE they will get LESS THAN promised. This is NOT funny either. What gets my ass is why some Republican governors TAKE AWAY collective-bargaining for state workers, teachers etc, and leave those privileges IN PLACE for police and fire ? What the HELL is THAT ???? Their pay, insurance, pensions are hurting the state budgets just like teachers and others ! WHY the "special privilege" ? Is this the old Roman theory of DIVIDE AND CONQUER ?? What if a cop is married to a unionized teacher ? 9/11 was eleven years ago. "Heroes" or not unions are "supposed" to be all about equalized bargaining. HOPEFULLY....that PRICK GOVERNOR in Wiseconsin will get RECALLED next week ! Mitch Daniels himself CANNOT PROVE taking away bargaining like he did 7 years ago is saving Indiana money ! The "cuts" yeah, but he could have gotten that WITHOUT stripping state worker unions of their bargaining processes ! Governor Mitch says, " Oh...and while I'm at it....NO MORE NEGOTIATIONS !!" ( It's a Republican thing )

did you all know the "new" hires were either relatives or close friends of the fire chief or elected officials??? This is so wrong for all the young people because it's Who u know, not WHAT or hard u will work!!!! It should be a fair playing field. Many young men/women wanted this job and didnt even get a call and they are good people. Just coincidence? I dont think so.

Really, fair playing field. Maybe that's whats wrong with our society, Maybe the young people better wake up and know that life isnt fair..its damn hard. And im so sorry your one of your freinds wasnt hired. Maybe you should have done a better job at resourcing for them instead of crying a river on this scumbag website. It wasnt completely rigged there were no lunsfords or wadles. So STFU.

DAMN !! I give authorization to HIRE people, after hearing for 5 years I am a cut-throat bastard and WANT to bust the fire and city worker unions, and people STILL bitch and complain ! Hell people, these 10 are 10 that are now EMPLOYED...PAYING TAXES etc. Yea...they are two-tier as per contract but, there is just NO MONEY to just blow on whatever. As mayor, I CANNOT let city worker union presidents be the mayor more than I am. Collective-bargaining is NOT a "right", but a "privilege". Local 2205 and my staff hammered the best contract we could all things considered. THE PEOPLE are NOT best represented whenever a fire or police union official can walk in my office and be able to scare me by saying "boo" ! Not on MY watch anyway. Really, I am just DAMN PROUD of my fire guys. They do the best they can.
