I have a family member who rides with Handy Van and I have never felt comfortable with the way they operate. I guess that gut feeling in my stomach was right! Wish TV8 reported that they are being sued for $100,000 in Medicaid fraud! If they are lying and stealing from the taxpayers by taking part in Medicaid fraud, what else are they doing that would be considered illegal? Does anyone know of any othere service in town that transports people to medical appointments? I may have to start taking my grandfather to his appointments if there are no other services available. Any suggestions are welcome.

Try the senior center transportation, they are great. They will transport anyone (you don't have to be a senior to ride). They will take you for medical appointments, store, etc.... Clean and frendly people. Give them a shot

They are not being sued. Maybe you should listen to local news instead Indy BS. A former employee. Convicted of fraud and SHE has to repay the money, the company guilty of nothing. That is the true story. Don't believe me call the radio station and ask them.

Woman sentenced for Medicaid fraud

CONNERSVILLE, Ind.(WISH)- A six month investigation into Medicaid fraud led to a two-year probation sentence for 23-year-old Andrea Williams from Connersville, Ind., said U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett.

From January 2008 through May 2010, Williams used her position as the billing manager of Handy Van Medical Transportation to aid her in Medicaid fraud.

HVM transports Medicaid beneficiaries to medical appointments. Williams submitted claims falsely saying transportation was given to wheelchair bound beneficiaries resulting in Indiana Medicaid paying a higher rate.

Williams extended her lie to say most patients required another attendant to help transport them.

In May of 2010, law enforcement went to HVM with a search warrant. During the search, Williams confessed to lying. Indiana Medicaid lost over $100, 000 as a result of Williamsí scheme.

"The detection of fraud in Medicare and Medicaid is the priority of the Office of Inspector General." said Lamont Pugh III, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Region for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. "Working with our federal and state partners we will continue to defend the interests of patients and taxpayers and hold those who attack these programs accountable."

"Medicaid fraud is an offense against all taxpayers. When a wheelchair van provider fraudulently over-bills Medicaid for their own selfish ends, it diverts Medicaid dollars that are needed elsewhere to pay for other patients. The Indiana Attorney General's Office and Indiana Medicaid Fraud Control Unit work collaboratively with our federal counterparts to detect over-billing and to hold accountable the fraudsters to reimburse the public treasury," Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said.

The presiding judge over the case ordered Williams to make restitution in the full amount lost by Indiana Medicaid.

It does not say that they are getting sued. How can you judge the whole company just because the person that does the billing violated the law. That's like saying a bank is bad because an employee embezzled a lot of money. I personally have used Handy Van and liked the service my family received.

Isn't the individual being sued a member of the owners family? And as for holding a company responsible for one bad employee, yes that is what you do. It is the companies responsibility to make sure they are hiring honest, trustworthy individuals to work for them. Especially when the individual is in a position to take care of accounts.
just wondering

Get some glasses or learn how to read because the article does not say that the company or the individual is getting SUED!!!! She has to make restitution. Also if you hold the company responsible for a bad employee then lets look at your employer. I'm sure you have had to work with some bad apples so does that make your employer bad.. oh wait nevermind cause your probably on welfare.

why did the daughter of the owners of handyvan take the rap for the double billing of medicade when she works for them. the owners should be taking the rap instead of andrea, the owners are responsible for their employees action, she was over billing for the companies benefit not hers.maybe she took the fall for steve and jullie so their image wont get tarnished. it is pretty bad when you have to use one of your children to take the fall for your own responsibility.steve is the one that does the book keeping for the company not andrea, let him stand up and quit hidding behind the books---shame on you steve and julie

No you don't have to be sued in a criminal fraud case. Part of the sentence is paying back the money you took. Keep in mind the feds spent a year on this case. They know who is and isn't involved.

Well if she was over billing then the money was being paid to the company. As I see it everyone here is at fault. Wasn't like she was taking money out of the cash box on the floor!

Yes what the girl/daughter did was totally wrong. For some reason, she took full responsibility instead of her parents of operating their business. Now that this is out in the open, I am now wondering what else is to be learned of their other business they own & operate. Do they own/operate a Funeral Home? I bet their other business are most likely getting investigated as well. I am sure so are other business/non for profits/etc are also being investigated as well without their knowledge. If you are taking tax payers money, over billing, or totally stealing from the Gov't then you wouldn't like it if someone stole from you or your business so why take from us? You had a inch & you took a mile. Shame on you all for being dishonest.

Come on people, for pete's sake! Do you honestly think that if the government thought she was intentionally and maliciously defrauding medicaid, that she would have gotten off with probation? Or that Handy Van would still be operating? This was a federal investigation!
