Once again, Connersville's Matt Howard is proving he's a legitimate, big-time college basketball player and someone all of us C'ville residents should be proud of.

Howard scored 20 points to help lead Butler to a 53-46 win over Detroit Thursday night in the 'Moter City.' Howard scored 16 of his points in the second half.

The freshman center also had 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in the Bulldogs' first Horizon League game. Howard scored a crucial tip-in late in the game to help seal the victory. Butler is now 8-0.

I've seen or played with or against every CHS 'star' since the early 60's - Jim Crone, Paul Crawford, Mr. Basketball Phil Cox, Gerald Thomas, Mike Heineman, Nick Morken - as well as all of the 'lesser-known' Spartan greats and other excellent playrs who did not play high school ball, and I have to say in my opinion, Matt Howard is the best hoopster to graduate from here.

I hope he has an injuy-free career because I honestly think he has the potential to get drafted by an NBA Developmental League team - which means he has a legitimate shot at a career in the NBA.

We should pick a home game at Hinkle Fieldhouse and a few hundred of us Connersvillites show up to watch Howard play. He deserves the support, as do the No. 13 rated Bulldogs.

To have Matt here for four years and not win a sectional is mind boggling

catman dew - My friends who go to a lot of the Spartans' games have complained for four years or more that Rodney Klein is a terrible, clueless coach.

I have no idea if they're right 'cuz I've only been to four CHS games the past few years, but many of them who go to all the games have lodged the same complaints about Klein on a consistent basis. So???

A lot of people would like to know how he could not win a championship with the talent he had on that team in the last couple of years. It is interesting how we have kept a basketball coach who can't even get up thru a sectional. You have years where you just don't have the talent, but what was last years excuse? So far this year, even with the wins, he still seems less than impressive as a coach. And if someone on his coaching staff is reading this, how about some free throw practice?

I've heard those same complaints many times, Amazed.

The people I talk to say Klein is on the "good side" of the CHS athletic director - for whatever reason - and if you're on that side, you're all right.

If you're not, you better watch your back.

That's what I've been told by some of the most ardent Spartan basketball fans, as well as at least two people who in the recent past were directly involved with CHS athletics.

That's a sad story if it's true, and the people who told me that swear it's the truth.

This community tends to idolize one good player and forgets the rest of the team members. Complaints about bias by the coaches and athletic department put a dark cloud over the whole concept. It's just high school basketball. Boo hoo to all of you 'armchair' coaches.

As far as Coach Klien I agree with all of you.He was a Decent player while at Cambridge City,As far as being in THE CLICK with the A>D> he has certainly been Rewarded by keeping his Job for not getting out of the sectional,Heck he's only won 3or4 games total in the sectionals. With our talent pool while in class 3A we possibly should have New Castles Championship banner instead of them.He needs to go NOW.Check the remainder of games and see if you can guess our overall record in late Feb??.Now lets get to Matt,I attended many games in his CHS carrer and he is without Question The best Talented Male to come out of here.April Mcdivit is as close as anyone,Male or Female to Matt's Talent. And remember he's only a FRESHMAN.Lets all get behind Matt and Butler and Demand Great Local news paper coverage as he makes his mark in the NCAA.His Grandfather,The late Henry Blommel must really be smileing from above at such a fine young man.Go Bulldogs.

OK Double Dribble, who else from last year's Connersvlle team is making a major impact in NCAA Division 1 basketball on a team rated in the top 13 in the country?

I didn't intend to make it sound like myself or anyone else "idolizes" Matt Howard, but he sure as he!l deserves all of the praise he receives for his accomlishments in high school and so far during his eight-game collegiate career. He does quite well in the classroom too, I'm told.

And yes, I realize his former teammates work just as hard as he did, but I've forgotten which one of them was on the Indiana All-Star team with him last summer. Oh yeah, none of them.

As far as any "dark cloud" that 'possibly' is hanging over the athletic department, it appears it was created by that department.

Go Matt Howard! Go Butler!!

Don't dribble that ball off your foot, it will go out of bounds.:) Take care.

We were not ignoring the other players or diminishing their roles. I know for my part I meant the combined talent Klien had over the last two years. Matt was a big factor that should have led to at least a sectional championship, but we know he couldn't do it alone. It is just poor coaching.

Amazed - I'm glad to see you realize I wasn't trying to slight any Spartan player who suited up on the teams Matt Howard played on.

I wasn't even thinking about any of his Spartan teammates, I was just trying to point out that I think he's the best player to be born in and grow up in Fayette County, play at and graduate from CHS and go on to play major college basketball.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun - and as I said - I know first hand how good Jimmy Crone, my man Philip, Gerald Thomas, Larry Miller (Denny too) and all of the '72,'73 and '74 guys were, Jimmy Free, Tommy Gable ... Mike Heineman was tremendous, Chris H. was tough as nails, Richard Byrd, Morken (not a "born here" player) was invited to try out for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, surviving to the final cut ... but from what I've seen, Howard looks like he's the best.

That's just my opinion. And, I hope I'm right. I'd like to say that about a Spartan hoopster every year but I'd also like to win a $10 million, tax-free lottery, so ...

I only mentioned the coach after catman dew noted that it's "mind boggling" Connersville did not win a sectional championship with a player of Howard's caliber, and you, who - like my friends - questiond Klein's coaching, calling it poor.

And since Howard has had some excellent teammates running up and down the court with him, and you and several friends use the terms "poor coach" or "poor coaching," it sounds like the complaints about Rodney Klein might very well be legitimate.

Good luck to coach Klein and his Spartans. I hope they have a successful, enjoyable and winning season. A win over Richmond tonight would be a great step toward such a campaign.

I agree with you Media Man. Like I stated before, Matt is as good as it gets around here. Connersville has a rich tradition in hoops, and we have been spoiled when it comes to winning. News flash.........Richmond 45-Spartans 40. The reason??? Hmmmm Coach (K) told the players not to shoot from outside the arc in the 4th.Qtr. Also I've been told that they almost never practice playing Defense. I remember the days of sayings that Defense wins games,I guess thats not in Coach Kleins vocabulary. Oh well at least it wasn't a wasted road trip to the Michigan state line. Sorry K.H. Your wishful thinking of a win over the Red Devils was short lived. Everyone can see that the talent is on the floor, The coach is in the Crapper.Great effort boys,Better days are commin. Coach (K) the noose is getting tighter.

I agree with you Media Man, As I stated before, Matt Howard is the best player from here since April Mcdivit. I was told just today by someone close to the team, Coach (K) dose'nt emphasize defense.Back in my day There was a saying that a good defense will always beat a good offense. Coach Klein has had several good teams since starting his tenure here,If he could'nt win with an all star in Matt Howard in class 3A, We will never win another sectional title now that we have moved to 4A. Well Coach K did it again,Richmond45, Connersville 40. Why you ask??? The players were told not to shoot ouside shots in the 4th Qtr. Well at least it was not another wasted trip to the Michigan border. The talent is on the floor for the Spartans,It's just that Coach (K) is in the Crapper. Sorry loyal Spartan backers, We have been spoiled by our past, We are used to winning. The only way we will see Hinkle Fieldhouse Again is to go watch the Butler Bulldogs. Time for a change.

Matt Howard - great basketball player - great young man - great parents and family.

Your idea about heading to Hinkle is a great one. Wouldn't it be fun to be able to go in buses like we used to for the semi-state, etc., when we were students. We would truly honor Matt and what fun for all of us. Keep us posted about your plan. It's a great one!

Hi gypywoman. You're 100 percent correct about Matt Howard and his family. As someone else noted, I'm sure the late and great Henry Blommel is looking down from Heaven with a big smile on his face, proud of his grandson's accomplishments.

Now the bad news. I was told Friday afternoon that tickets to Butler's home games are going to be next to impossible to obtain this season. I'm not 100 percent sure that's true but it was from a very reliable source and with the Bulldogs past and current success, I can understand that.

That probably means we won't be able to get a large group of fans to go to a game together. Ticket scalping is illegal in Indianapolis and who knows if any ticket agencies have any ducats for sale, so maybe the TV will be as close as some of us can get to Hinkle Fieldhouse.

I can tell you that the Bulldogs play Florida State at Conseco Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. next Saturday, Dec. 15 in the John Wooden Classic. I don't know if any tickets are available but there might be. Purdue also plays in that Classic in the opening game but I can't remember who the Boilermakers play.

And, I did see a commercial and that game will be shown on WNDY Channel 23.

Below is a link to Butler's schedule. I'll try to keep posting to let people know when any Bulldog games will be televised or if I hear about any tickets that can be obtained.

4th out of 5 - Those were great days when Spartan Bowl was filled to capacity during sectional and regional games. Students/fans from other communities could be seen walking around town between the afternoon and night sessions.

Here's something I've thought about for a couple of years. Since CHS will play in sectionals at other locations, why not hold a 1, 2 or 3A sectional or regional here at the Bowl?

The players and fans would spread the word about what a great place the Bowl is to play in and watch a game, and C'ville's economy would get a little boost because people will eat at different establishments and maybe even do a little shopping at Penneys, Kmart, Wal-Mart - wherever. The school system would generate some revenue, too, I would think.

Why let one-class basketball result in such a great venue as the Bowl sitting empty during the boys' tournament? I'd like to see our school officials pursue that opportunity, if the IHSAA even "allows" it?

The only negatives I can think of are the lack of parking facilities and possibly hotel lodging. Other than that, Connersville/Spartan Bowl is an excellent place to hold a tournament. Anyone else feel that way?

----------

Rocketrod - If what you were told about the Spartans not devoting any or much practice time on the defensive end of the court, don't expect the team to finish with a .500 or better record.

Sure the main object of the game is to put the ball through the hoop but if your team averages 65 points a game and gives up 70, it's gonna lose more often than it wins.

I hope that's not coach Kline's approach to the way the team pracices but if it is, its gonna be a long season for CHS.

Take care all.

Sorry to double post, but the game I referred to as being on TV next Saturday is Butler's 6 p.m. contest vs. Florida State, which will be on WNDY Channel 23.

However, Purdue plays No. 14-rated Louisville in the same John Wooden Classic at 3:30 p.m. in a game scheduled to be broadcast by CBS.

Get those sugar-free soft drinks and baked chips - gotta eat healthy - ready and make sure the TV is working, basketball fans.

There might be some tickets available for Butler's game, since Florida State probably will not bring many fans. Call Butler's Athletic Department or Conseco Fieldhouse for information.

Coach Robert klien is a total goof ball on or off the court. His couching abilities is a farce. Our own players from past are better than a past player from cambridge city whom couldnt even play good when he was in school and what college team did he play for? Are we his first High Scool team? I know everyone deserves a chance he has had his time to move his sorry noncoaching wanna be great coach to another town like Laurel or Cambridge if they would take their own back I doubt it. The Atheletic Director is a joke also she/he needs to go also. We need a director that does not play favorites with a Clown for a coach.

What a Loss - Actually it's Rodney Klein, but his correct first name isn't going to help his coaching ability.

So you say him 'play' at Lincoln, too, with your accurate desciption of his "game."

And "playing favorites," a "goofball" and changes needed in the CHS athletic department ... will, it seems your hammer hit the nail on the head about five or six times in your post.

Don't be a stranger to this board or the TownCow site, either. Take care.

Did anyone else who went to the game notice the crowd was way down. Normally no matter how the Spartans are playing, or what the weather is, the bowl is packed when we play both Rushville and Richmond, but not this year. Maybe it is because people are tired of watching Rodney's poor coaching style. I too heard the players were told that if they took an outside shot in the 4th, they would be pulled from the game, hit or miss. Another question is why were our two biggest bodies, Kyle Fisher and Trent Patterson on the bench in the 4th? We could have used those two big rebounders in there. Maybe if more than the coaches pick got to shoot, maybe the outcome could have been different. Before anyone jumps, I am not diminshing the roles or abilities of the guys who did shoot, but some of the others were open and weren't allowed to shoot. I had heard during football season that Rodney expected to get a lot of booing because he was going to keep the score down. Well he kept it in the 40s, he should be proud. How can you tell guys not to shoot when they are wide open? Isn't it the point of basketball to MAKE a basket, not just control possession of the ball. I don't want to see them just throwing the ball up, but some of them had a good look at the basket, but didn't shoot for fear of being removed from the game. I don't claim to be an expert, but this was just my observation from the stands and comments I heard from the FEW surrounding spectators.
