After reading the story in the newspaper about the dog found tied to a dumpster in Geneva, it made me think of how I see a lot of people here in town treat their dogs. The newspaper story was sad but had a very happy ending, and I hope the dog finds owners who will love him and take good care of him. Anyway, this story made me think of the many dogs I see around that people have, but they tie them to a dog house or outside 24/7. It makes me wonder what the point of them having that dog is? To me even if a dog has its basic needs of food, water and shelter, dogs need more than to be tied to a doghouse or outside all of their lives. They need to go inside and feel like part of the family. They need to be taken for walks and talked to, to go along for rides in the car. I just really don't understand what would make people keep a dog that they keep chained outside all of the time even if it is being taken care of otherwise. I think this is very cruel behavior, but I'm assuming it's allowed as long as the dog's basic needs are taken care of. Does anyone else find this to be sad?

Animals are God's great gift to humans. When one sees a creature being mistreated, he or she has a moral obligation to go vigilante, if necessary, and free the animal. Laws must be enacted to elevate punishment for those who in any way mistreat animals.
