So it's time for officials to do something? Not brush it off? How about teaching our kids to use their heads? Why is it everyone else's fault? Granted the situation is a sad one.... parents need to take responsibility for the children they raised. I am sorry for the family.. but I do not think the state is responsible for this persons death.

Not too bright. Sorry for his family but Joseph chose to do a dangerous thing. He would be responsible for his own actions.

"It's time for them to do something about it," Daryl Lathan said. "They shouldn't brush it off like it's no big thing when kids are dying over there."

All the signs and patrols in the world will NOT save people from what caused this, utter stupidity. My guess is that this is the first person to do this, and get killed. But mark my words it will NOT be the last. Right now as I write this a minimum of 10 other douchbags are thinking "I bet I can do it and live" and they will try it and some will not survive.

I don't care how religious a person is, no one can argue that Darwin was right about the gene pool being self cleaning.

The funny part is his buddy saying "I thought it was a bad idea"
I seriously doubt it. In fact if this guy had made it, you would have gone next to prove you weren't a chicken sh*t.

Sorry for what? Do you remember the crying Indian commercials about littering?
We need to get that guy out of retirement and run a new group of adds including such things as kids running 140 mph down the road and dying, kids trying to get off by trying to hang themselves, then actually dying from it. Huffing fumes and dying, and the list goes on of the stupid acts that clearly indicate a lack of common sense.

And it needs to be truthful, show the people at the funeral talking about the kid hanging himself while beating his meat, and then laughing quietly about it.

The time has come that we need to quit being polite about stupidity and facing it head on. It's become so common place that we just pass it by.

It would be one thing if this was a 5 yr old and he had a cape tied on and had gone off the roof of his house, that's sad. This kid was way to old to not have known better.

"Lathan's father wants signs or patrols to keep people away from the lighthouse."

I'm (for once) am not trying to be an insensitive @$$ but if this kid was stupid enough to jump off of the top of a light house, I seriously doubt a posted sign would have made a difference.

Now wait for the lawsuit...

Eat your veggies to grow healthy and strong, respect your elders, brush your teeth, and uh what was that other thing I was going to tell you.???

Maybe trespassing on closed property, climbing a 30 foot lighthouse and jumping into 15 feet of water with rocks, and undergrowth won't be a good idea.

Boy I'd sue the owner of the light house for sure.

Another head-in-the-sand parent. It doesn't sound like this tragedy will wake him up, either.

WOW! Are you serious? What teenager in there right mind would jump from the top of a lighthouse, who would ever do that? I feel for his family and his friends who were there and poor Bethany who was with him when it happened. My prayers are with you all. Rest in Peace Joseph

I understand the family is greiving and looking for a "reason" or someone to take blame for this boy's death, but everybody else has been correct. The young man's actions directly led to his own death, and I doubt any "stay away" signs would have stopped him.

In fact, I'm prettty sure there could have been a sign that said "Jumping off of this lighthouse is a BAD idea and you will probably DIE" and he still would have done it.

But once again instead of acknowledging that actions have consequences, some misguided family will take advantage of our society's need to control every aspect of life and overly litigious nature to push through some kind of law and get some form of settlement.

Learn to control your children. It's no own's fault but the person allowing the action and doing the action.

I'm really sorry for the loss this family is suffering, and I hope they heal quickly.

No sign, no law, nothing but good judgement would have prevented this unfortunate death.

Lets lay blame where it belongs, and that's with the young man who made such a poor choice.

It cracks me up that everyone so far is on the same page. The kid died because he made a bad choice.
But why when another young black (or white) male gets shot and killed because he's robbing someone, stealing/using drugs, is it a tradgedy? What's the difference?

AAAAAAAAAAAA HE DID USE HIS HEAD IT SOUNDS LIKE LOOKING FOR ROCKS UNDER THE WATER. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS JUMP FEET FIRST TO SEE HOW DEEP IT IS. BETTER TO BREAK A ANKLE OR LEG RATHER THAN YOUR NECK.

Sorry about the loss of suck a young life.

With that said - look at the shape of the lighthouse, it is much wider at the bottom than it is at the top. He looks old enough to know it was a stupid idea.
Why is it that parents NEVER worry about things like this until their child gets hurt - I have no doubt the father never gave that lighthouse a second thought. Then, when something happens, parents ALWAYS expect the teachers, cops, officials, neighbors & everybody else in the world to be responsible for their child & their childs actions but they never admit responsibility themselves?
Maybe the father should have taught his son about dangers, things that should not be done or tried...
Even if there were signs kids would not pay attention. Are parents willing to put their money where their mouth is? Help pay to secure it? Doubt it! Once again, it is everyone elses responsibility to keep their kids safe because they don't have the time to. Sorry, just tired of parents suddenly becoming so concerned about things that are there every single day when t is too late...
