Circling AROUND something is different from circling OVER something. The glider pilot circled around the facility, not over it. Also, you may pass over the facilities above indicated altitudes.

Earthquakes, tidal waves and meltdowns can damage nuclear power plants. Gliders cannot. I have no fear of nuclear power plants. I have a great fear of idiots with intentions of "protecting " me.. You are thousands of times safer in or around a nuclear power plant than you are in a doctor's office for instance. Each year, over 100,000 Americans die as a result of doctors and nurses not properly washing their hands. How many died because of gliders flying a circle around a power station? Zero.

So in your opinion a glider can't possibly damage a nuclear facility? Impossible? Really? With the state of modern explosives? Sort of like a motorboat being unable to damage an American destroyer? Heard of the U.S.S.. COLE?

The area around or above the power station in question IS NOT a prohibited Zone. It is not marked as such on the maps . The nearby Savanna River facility IS a Prohibited zone and is marked as such on the maps. That IS NOT where the glider pilot was flying. Thousands of airplanes in the USA fly over nuclear power plants every day. Do not worry about airplanes. Since 911, any pilot who wanders into a prohibited zone, a TFR ,etc, WILL be intercepted by military fighter planes and dealt with as appropriate to the situation.
The US military command structure has the authority and is fully capable of dealing with these incidents. There is no authority for or need for Darlington County SO or any other local LE to be out commandeering airports and blazing away at gliders with shotguns, pistols and rifles.

You're being obtuse TSF.YOU are aware that passenger jets fly higher than 18,000 feet. What do you think will happen if a passenger jet flies over a facility at ten thousand feet? You also seem to think that Capt.Kirk can BEAM a military jet to where its needed.IT takes TIME! Not only that, do you think they keep F-15's under every rock? Where do you think jets would come from if Houston were threatened? If Ellington Field has already been shut down, and it was scheduled for that when Bush was president, they'd have to come from SAN ANTONIO! That is, according to the Houston Chronicle, which was covering that story, not to mention the local affiliates.

That is a typical Republican generalization. No basis of specifics. I have read all of Mike's replies. Can you give a specific example? I still say the word 'semantics' is a cop out until proven otherwise. Easy way to avoid the point of the debate.

I believe you. Welcome. The person that we thought you were is vile, hateful, and if that were you, those qualities would have surfaced by now. Sorry if any of us have offended you. Maybe, too, the ones who have experienced "Gail" are just overly cautious and judgemental of anyone new coming aboard. You sound to be a very good and reasonable person. Hope you will continue to contribute. Underneath all the surface hostility, there is actually some good fun and relationships here.

Fleming was familiar with the post-9/11 notam that advises pilots to avoid flying near facilities such as power plants

Two views, though similar, the second one finally said it. The guy knew it was inadvisable to fly over. Oh wait, he's special and just one time wouldn't hurt. PS After reading the first article, you failed to mention that the guy had lost contact with the ground. The lady that owned the tow co. was asking everyone on handhelds if they knew where he was, because he wasn't responding to his radio.

Arent you the good little liberal! I have no problem with Spoon or anyone wanting to jump in the conversations but for you to coddle someone because their feelings got hurt is classic! On this thread, you have to earn your keep, no one receives a participation trophy....although it appears as if you're trying to hand one out!
