Jackson County does NOT have a Humane Society. They dump strays at the Commerce Vet. I responded to an ad on Petfinders and traveled from SC to GA to adopt a puppy on 2/15/10. No one told me that she was a "stray". If animals are not claimed by owner, the vet can adopt and keep the fee or euthanize and get paid by state or county. They do not do proper exams on these animals. I understand that money is tight, however, a person willing to adopt would be willing to pay to hae a complete vet check. I only had my angel one day before she got sick and had whipworm ($20 fecal exam could have detected) Parvo & Corona. She was not strong enough to pull thru the ordeal of treating for Parvo and was put down. I have a $500 vet bill now and a broken heart. If anyone knows where the littermates are (2 males, blue merle shelties) please contact me by email at puppiesnminis@yahoo.com. I would love to know their fate after being in the same holding pen.

Jackson County Ga. DOES have a Humane Society, but not a shelter. We post our pets on our website, www.HSJC.com and on Petfinders.com . All our pets are housed by volunteers and are current on all shots, spayed or neutered and microchipped. I'm terribly sorry about your dog, but wanted to let you know that Jackson County Humane Society DOES exist and we are trying hard to gather enough funds for a shelter!
Commerce Veterinary Hospital does house pets (aka strays) that are brought in by Jackson County Animal Control.
Thanks Candice

I have used this clinic for years and never had a problem. Maybe it is just you.

They are uncaring and all they want to do is up sell on a sick animal. First get the animal healthy. Then worry about up selling. Strays are all over our neighborhood and brought in 3 kittens for the streets.

I have had good experiences with this practice. Dr. Fricks and Dr. Phillips are especially caring and sensitive to pet owners' feelings about their animals. They have been treating our 2 cats for over 10 years. Both are elderly now and the vets are compassionate.

Pet care is expensive, however.

Jackson County Humane Society did nothing to help me when my cat (which was a stray) had kittens. I met one of the primary people involved in the humane society while buying cat food in Kroger in 2013 shortly after the kittens were born and she gave me the phone number and told me that they could help me with fosters and everything. I called multiple times, always got an answering machine and never received a return phone call. I tried facebook, cat rescues, and did find homes for 3 of the 5 kittens. But, I was left with 4 cats, all feline leukemia positive. All of the cat rescues were full and I wouldn't take them to the flea market and give them away as I wanted them to go to good homes.. Now some well meaning family members have taken two of them away and they said it was to a vet in Commerce who agreed to take them. The only vet in Commerce denies they were taken in. My family says they can't remember the name of the person who took them. If you know of such place or vet, please let me know. I called the only vet in Commerce and they said that they don't have them. And as for Jackson Co Humane Society, thanks for nothing. I had them all spayed, neutered and vaccinated. I'm pissed off I didn't get the help I was promised, and that I don't know where they went. They were taken after I went out of town on a job assignment. Yes, my family was trying to help me find them a place, but these family members do not like cats and I am quite upset. Perhaps they did find a vet who lives in Commerce to take them, but I don't know for sure if it was a clinic or someone private and I am not happy not knowing.
