Typical race issue, created by the Ledger as always.
I wonder has mayor Tomlinson lost white support?
I have never seen her at my church or any other functions I attend.
With the black community its all about what have you done for us, not whats best for the city as a whole.

Mayor Tomlinson's legacy may yet be the start of a revitalized Southside, the Brown Avenue Bridge project and surrounding areas are much needed in that often neglected area of town.

I always figured they'd do like was done with Peabody and Baker... demolish the old apartments and build the spiffy new projects.

The issue was settled amicably. Just one block from the Liberty theater are a block of fairly new apartments built by the housing authority.
There is also the Liberty District housing that was bought for 1 million dollars and stands empty today.
The area around the Liberty Theater can be developed by anyone wishing to do so, privately, but I am sure with the blessing and support of our city leaders.
Our city government cannot build restaurants and retail stores. The city is improving the roads and putting sidewalks in to make it more desirable but again, who is going to invest in a business right next to a housing project?

Good points, and the downtown area of Broadway and related blocks have plenty of room to expand into for now... and then even the possiblity of expanding to the north might be somewhat more favorable than that of the south.
