I passed that way last night but the entourage I was with opted for the Fair next door... a bit better this year, with about a gazillion folks.

Sure miss the old free acts (which in the 1960s boasted some pretty big musical acts), and all the food and livestock stuff that made the original Fair so eclectic.

Yes... I once wrote an essay in Playgrounds Magazine on the old Gooding's Million Dollar Mideway that used to pass through here when I was a kid... back when the Fair was a truly major Autumn Ritual.

To get things back on topic, I was in Columbus this past weekend and went to the festival, I did not know they were having that pirate festival when I went cause I really wanted to see the museum.
The museum is excellent and very interesting and I also enjoyed the pirate thing too.

Well Lorri, I have to ask, we're you one of the belly dancers? I loved the show.

Commando, if I'd known yoy were there I sure would have stopped by, would like to meet you, and the other Topix regulars, in person one of these days.

As for where I'll be tonight if anyone wants to come catch my show and say hello, I'll be with the Shadowville All-Stars at SoHo, helping Tripp Wriggley keep his Open Mic alive.

Come out tonight for a great sampling of the "Columbus Georgia Sound"!

And great scheduling/timing, as well, being located right next to the annual Fair, the concept could be park and stroll around both events...

I was at the Pirate Festival this weekend performing. We were "Coldiron" performing on the Monitor stage inside the museum. The festival was great this year and attendance was up, but I missed the bigger pirate crew that usually come. Normally the festival is a weekend long event with crews coming in from as far south as St. Augustine, and as far north as New York. This year was mostly locals and it was condensed to a single day. It was fun, but I miss the excitment and pagentry of the larger festivals. For all that... I sang at noon and 4pm and had a blast!! It's a shame there's not a pirate attraction ,(outside of Disney World), that runs year round. I'd be there at least once a week if I wasn't singing and performing there. Haha Following, are a couple of links to Pirate Festival Performances from this past weekend.:)

Hopefully next year I'll see some of you! Thanks to Will Dockery to pointing me here!

You may want to mention to your friend a great song by Son Volt off their "American Central Dust" CD called "Sultana". It is about the worst maritime disaster in American history and it happened during the Civil War.
Seeing how that's a Civil War Naval museum and all plus it's a cool song.

Hey Sun Volt!

I'll have to look into that! We do a lot of festivals, and generally play the parties and picnics at the museum and reenactments so maybe we could do that song, or maybe you could come sit in sometime!:)

I remember Sun Volt from back in the 1990s... great band, real Americana as I recall.

Are they still around?

Veronica, speaking of Festivals... would you be interested in joining us at the World AIDS Day Concert/Festival, held annually at Cunningham Center at CSU?

We have a great time... and we need someone to sing the National Anthem as well as a few of your tunes.

The show is December 1st, let me know?

Hello and good morning, Veronia... thanks for joining us, we'll be performing from 3pm-5pm that Saturday afternoon (and the National Anthem kicks off the speaking and awards ceremony), the 5th event the Shadowville All-Stars have played the fund raiser fot Jeremy Hobbs and his Chattahoochee Better Way Foundation, the last one was the Riverwalk show at Rotary Park... just down the hill from the scene of Pirate Fest.

Here's the basic details and event page for the World AIDS Day show, and I'll post some video from previous years here to give you a look at the stage... the Cunningham Center at CSU is that new giant glass and steel building near the "Train Station" Burger King, across the way from Peachtree Mall on the Columbus State University campus:
