Top Hat Cafe, though long-defunct, should have a special Hall of Fame listing as the greatest fried chicken of all time.

Top Hat was downtown near the Greyhound Bus Station... really spicy, greasy "soul food" style fried chicken. Their breat sandwich was the breast, bones and all, between two slices of white bread served in a brown paper sack... truly nothing like it around here, delicious stuff, and they were open late at night.

Popeye's Chicken is slightly similar but there's no replacing Top Hat.

<quoted text>Now I remember!!!Yeah,That was good chicken! We got a soul food joint in Knoxville that does the rib sandwich that way, bones and all.I'm coming that way in September and I was wonderin if the new Chicken Comers was anything close to the original. If so,I can hardly wait.
And likewise I remember the old Chicken Comers well... there is a bew version of that open but I gaven't got around to trying it yet. I have to say that I've hestitated because I'd hate to be dissapointed... maybe soon, though.

Yes, gotta hit Country's at least once if in the area, I think that's required by law... heh.

You no doubt remember the Bluegrass music night Country's off Macon Road has had for many years, this is a great place to catch some of the great local music, and old friends like Rick Edwards drop by often as well.

Gosh no, they have been gone for years. Surely you remember the bouncing ball on the sing along screen?
If you have a craving for Shakey's pizza there is one in Auburn AL.

Thanks for the info, Ted. Ahh what memories.
I ate at that buffet place across from Macon road Barbeque, think it was called "Capt. Tom's", worst damn food I ever had, my stomach exploded that night in bed. Surely it MUST be closed!

Again thanks for the info. Glad to hear that about Capt Tom's.
We have several places like that here who have that all you can eat buffet garbage food but Capt Toms was certainly the worst ever.
What about Orange Julius and Taco Casa out at Columbus Square Mall?
Used to eat there and go to Memory Lane.

Columbus must have gone through some major changes since I was there last. I remember a place way over off Cusseta road that had really good barbeque, can't remember the name but it was in a terrible area of town and the building was a hole in the wall but the Barbeque was fantastic!

Sounds like Brennan Road BBQ... at one point it was owned by the person who owns Macon Road BBQ, but that may have changed.

That would be Brennan Road BBQ, don't know if they are still open or by the same owners but they did have some good BBQ.
You may want to try Smokey Pig over off off Linwood and stay away from Country's and Chester's downtown (yech)
