Why no supervision? Teens camping on a river by themselves sounds crazy.

you're right, we went camping all the time in the summer without adults. Hell accidents happen and you can't blame this on being unsupervised. You have to let go of the apron strings at some point, but my thoughts and prayers are with the boy's family. This was just a tragic accident nobody is to blame.

why does everything have to be an issue of whether they were black or white

actually anthony was black and very much loved by family and friends. This has not been a very good year for this family, they lost his father last year after a very long illness, and now his only son is gone. please show some compassion towards this family, remember his mother lost her child right before mothers day.

We also used to go camping all the time as teens without adult supervision. Just good wholesome fun.

So sorry for the loss of this child. My prayers are with his family.

Parents should teach their children to swim as soon as they are able. It is a valuable thing to know. there is no excuse for anyone over the age of five to not know how to swim. and parents if you know your child cannot swim then why let them go camping by a river unsupervised. It is a tragic loss for this child's parents and freinds my prayers are with them.

My dad taught me to swim at age 5. And I started my daughter at age 2. I think it's VERY important for ALL people to know how to swim. I agree with you 100%. A lot of lifes could be saved if only the parents took a little time to teach them how to swim. Very sad!

stop and think, when you go to swim meets how many black low income families do you see...???? even though I had more than most, I remember going to my grandmother's for summer vacation, and the pool was miles away, there was only the bus to get there and my grandmother was working and couldn't take time off just to get me swimming lessons. Everyone does not have the benefits growing up as others, just thank God you had the parents you did and they could afford to give you the lessons you needed.

It didn't cost my mom or dad a dime to teach me to swim. If you are to busy to take an hour a week to teach your child to swim and to save your childs life, you are to busy!

This is very sad. One thing I dont understand is if the friends saw him go into the water then go under, why didn't anyone try to save him? why did they all leave to look for help instead of saving him then? Or did none of them know how to swim? Just curious.

It's very possible that those kids set up camp without the parents knowing. Maybe his Mom found out that they had been camping when she learned of his death and then she delivered that news to the media. It's also possible that none of the guys with him could swim either. Or they could've all panicked because they did not have permission to be there in the first place, and took off running, then thought better of it and went for help. It's easy as an adult to say, "Wow, someone should have stayed there to be able to identify the spot where he went under, when the rest went for help". No matter what the scenario, it is a tragic, tragic accident and a nightmare that his friends will have to live with forever. Peace and prayers to his family.
