Sorry for the families. Mopeds should not be on the streets. These people using them have DUI`s, why should they be allowed to drive a moped? We as tax payers need to do something to stop this. OK, I can drink and drive...get caught...oops, loose my lience... get me a moped or a lawnmower.... no problem.....Still drink and drive.... Hello, wake up.

First of all, my condolences to the family, this is truly a tragedy. Many posting are really missing the point. They cause of the collision was failure to yeild by someone making a left turn. The fact that the driver turning left has to yield first before making the turn. That would count for other vehicles, mopeds, pedestrians or whatever. Fact is there are many other types of vehicles that have the lawful right to use the roadways. It is illegal in all 50 states to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. This is why nearly all new roads are required to have bicycle lanes with the main exception being the intestate. It is up to all of us drivers to be aware of everything happening on the road around us. I called this a collision because it would have been preventable if proper attension and/or judgement been applied. It was daylight, there are no obstructions to block the view in any direction, in fact from where the driver was turning left you can see nearly a third of a mile or better up the street to see oncoming traffic. Saying that a moped does not belong on the road is as wrong as saying that someone who can't read doesn't belong in the library when it is their lawful right to be there. As gas prices continue to rise, we will see more and more alternate transportation type vehicles on the road and need to be mindful of them.

If you want to be mindful of an "alternate transportation type vehicle" that is really annoying, wait until you get behind a golf cart loaded down with blue hairs and their pre-school age grandkids. You can safely pass a moped, but a golf cart has no turn signals and you never know when the kids are going to jump out of the thing.

I'm just waiting for the golf cart riders to start filtering in to Irmo and Lexington from the lake area. Stupidity knows not the meaning of age discrimination.

Condolences to the family of the moped rider.

They made it against the law to ride bicycles on sidewalks years ago.

Sorry to the family of this poor guy but I'm sure the lady didn't MEAN to hit him. Accidents happen. That still doesn't give people the right to CONTRIBUTE to accidents by riding mopeds in the road that can't keep up with the flow of traffic. And another thing- all these nerds in Spandex who feel like they're entitled to ride their bicycles on roads rather than the sidewalks that are RIGHT BESIDE THEM- this is what the sidewalks are for. Get off the roads! Ha- I bet this will get a nasty comment or 2, but I can't STAND traffic backing up for some jerk to ride his bicycle and I will not feel sorry when someone knocks one of their butts down. They ask for it.

Bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles all have a right to use the highways with automobiles, however common sense should tell the cycle drivers to be extra cautious. Even in a car I do not count on the other driver to see me or behave in a predictable manner. I see to many on cycles ignoring stop signs and traffic lights, acting like everyone should look out for them. I realize that was not the case this time, I'm just saying you have to watch out for yourself, be prepared for someone to not give you the right away.
The man's death is a tragedy and I feel bad for the family and for the other driver.

I was speaking of vehicles that by law have right to opearate on public roads. This does not include such things as golf carts , go carts, lawn tractors, atv's, big wheels, bobcat skidsteer loaders, bulldozers, goat drawn wagons, you get the idea

What about people who live in the City and choose to use a moped rather than a gas guzzling car/truck? People just need to be cautious, act as though they have a little human decency, and show that they possess at least one intelligent brain cell.

I do not know all of the details surrounding this "wreck", but I would guess that had it been a motorcycle rather than a moped, the outcome would have been the same. I would also bet that the driver of the car was on the cell phone.

Mr. Fletcher was going and coming to work just like anybody else trying to earn a living....... yes after retirement. Do the background and watch for the events that are sure to be exposed about the female that was driving and I am sure all of these negative comments will change. Truthfully there are two families that will never be the same. We cannot change the past but only learn from it and be thankful for each day. Today the Fletcher family grieves but it could very well be one of us tomorrow

If they're that cheap then maybe they should try the city bus system....?

SOME people on here are just so very disrespectful and inconsiderate of people's feelings. I happened to know the man riding the moped and all these negative statements calling him a jerk and fool...are absolutely uncalled for! I grieve right along with his family. He was just leaving work, making a living for his family, being a good husband and father. These people saying derrogative things about him...obviously you didn't know him at all. And to the driver that hit him...Carelessness is what got us all here today! The Fletcher family knows that they have my condolences and my prayers are to them! Somebody has to have a ♥!

I have, several times. The last time I called, I was told it would be 90 minutes before someone could respond. It's not a priority.

I even talked to my county councilman. He said that there's already been 1 attempt to introduce an ordinance similar to the one in Charleston county that would make it legal for these things to drive on secondary roads, but it didn't make it out of committee.

<Sigh> Life goes on.

You is sick. I don't understand how you would say some things like that. Did you read the Driver manual book. I think you need to reread that and get some good ol information, and i really think it's sad. my prayers goes out to the family and friends.
