Gang Presence in South Carolina

Full story: WLTX Columbia

For many South Carolinians, hearing that gangs are operating in their community sounds odd.

Might not expect this comment from a black guy, but all the criminal accusations aside, i would rather live in an area with a. Warlock presence than an area with a law enforcement presence. At least my wife would be able to the store in peace.

Some if the nicest people I have ever met were bikers and yes they were complete gentelmen. If we all had family that were as dedicated to protecting one another like some of these bike clubs the world would be a better place. And it takes other non bike club people to involve the bikers into illegal activity to keep the shit going. If we all were to just worry about taking care of our own and teach right from wrong we would be better off. That's the problem these days everyone has to get into everyone else's business. I personally love bikers and believe me there are only a few that are really bad that give the rest a bad name. When I was dating a guy that rode it was the most relaxing part of my day being in that bike. If you give the bikers the same respect that you would give your friends you would get it back! Gang leader who lived here gets life in prison

NASHVILLE — A Cookeville man who was a leader in the criminal gang known as Vice Lords was sentenced in Federal Court last week to life in prison, plus five years.

Monique “Money” Smith, 41, lived on Bayview Drive here until 2011 when he was arrested by federal agents after being indicted by a federal grand jury on seven counts of drug and firearm crimes.

“He played a leading role in gang activity in this area,” Cookeville Police Major Nathan Honeycutt said last year after Smith was tried and found guilty of participating in a drug distribution conspiracy, distributing crack cocaine, and various firearms offenses.

Honeycutt said Smith had moved here from Memphis and lived in the Bayview Drive residence for some time while helping lead the criminal activities of the Vice Lords gang, a Chicago-based crime organization.

In September of 2011, Smith and 16 others, most of them from Wilson County, were indicted by the federal grand jury following an investigation by the FBI, the Lebanon Police Department, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the TBI, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Many of the 16 others indicted later pleaded guilty, but Smith chose to take his case to trial. That trial was held in Nashville in October of 2012, and Smith was found guilty on enough counts to warrant a life sentence.

His sentencing hearing was held last week before U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell.

According to David W. Boling, public information officer with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Smith was brought before the judge on February 14 and was sentenced to life plus five years for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute crack cocaine and marijuana; for being a convicted felon in possession of firearms; and for possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

After his trial last October, prosecutors said testimony had confirmed that Smith was a high ranking member of the Vice Lords and was largely responsible for coordinating the gang’s activity in Tennessee.

In addition to the charges on which he was tried and convicted, Smith also had two prior serious drug offenses, officials said at the time.

Also after that trial, U.S. Attorney Jerry E. Martin said,“The conviction of a gang member who operated largely in suburban areas like Cookeville and Lebanon should serve as notice that the U.S. Attorney’s office and our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners will bring our combined resources to bear anywhere, at any time, when gang members traffic in drugs and carry guns. The message is clear — gang crime will not be tolerated.”

Don't for get the motorcycle gang bangers that have been around for a long time. The black & white motorcycle gang bangers. They are some of the biggest dope traffickers in SC. Most don't wear their colors offen trying to keep a low profile, especially the motorcycle gangs that have been around for awhile. But, if you see their "colors" or know where any of them live if you've seen them in their "colors", you need to call the cops! No one needs that kind of people in their neighborhood.

Glad we moved away years ago because of crime and taxes is why we moved from our beloved state of SC and moved to the smoky mountains of East Tennessee where live life is beautiful all the time and cost of living is cheap. I hope you have the peace we have living in a place of gangs, crime and living in fear all the time.
