People need to learn to swim if they're going to be in the water.

I hate to read about this loss but people need to be aware of the river as well as the rapids what can happen their what starts out as fun ends up as something bad.

Young people are all over the Congaree River on both sides, and many of them are drinking illegally while doing so.

Why isn't anyone doing anything about this? Check it out yourself.

he is an usher at my church. good kid comes from a great family. the ghetto comment was uncalled for and plain racist. Lots of people stand in water that can not swim. Yes I agree we should all take swimming lessons or wear a life vest if we are going to be in water like that.

Some people are just plain stupid! My heart goes out to the family! That can happen to anyone whether you can swim or not! I wish you guys at the top would get a life and get God! Remembereveryone has their own day and yours is surely to come with all the negative things you have to say! The victim is someone and someone's child and Im sure you are too! So stop being STUPID!

The story said he stepped into a deep part of the water and went under. My guess is, that he didn't realize how deep the water was when we stepped into it. Let's not make rude comments on here. We should all be respectful of him, his family, and friends.

How sad. RIP

My sister laughed at me when I told her I am going to get me a life jacket when I go fishing even if I am standing on the bank.

I need to definitely take swimming lessons.

I have read all comments with my heart. I don't beleive anyone was being rude or racist. All of the comments sounded to me to be out of concern. I myself would rather my grands not to go to any body of water without me. I try to be very cautious, but no matter how careful you are things are going to happens.
Much love and concern for the family.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

This is terrible! One of the four teenagers knew he could not swim and had sense enough to know his limitations, even knowing he was being left behind. The others had "tombstone" courage and made a bad decision. That is what life is about, making good decisions and bad ones. Hopefully, you survive your bad ones. The other two tried to save their friend and will never forget this. This is a terrible loss of life. My condolence to the family for their loss.

yes he was being racist. read ALL of the comments, before commenting. NOT ALL places downtown are not 'ghetto' equating something negative or black american. ANYWAY, there are more important things today than someone's racist slants. However, whenever possible I have to put 'you' in your place.

Isn't this like the third drowning in a week? Come on people. If you can't swim or can't swim good. Don't get in the water!

These rapids and areas on the water are treacherous. Strong swimmers are at risk as well. This area is DANGEROUS, should be avoided completely... but I have seen people out here, even consuming alcohol. It makes for a deadly mix. (Not saying that the deceased had been drinking, I'm just saying on a random day what I have seen)
