"the courts say a summons is sent after being 30 or 60 days late"...UH NO...i was 14 days late. FOURTEEN! this is yet another example of how poorly our city is run!

i received my summons less than the 30 days that the city is talking about. furthermore, did the city send a summons out to everyone who was late making a 2007 payment? NO.
why is the city being MORE STRICT on collecting a tax than the State government? why can't the mayor and the city of columbia APOLOGIZE when they make mistakes instead of trying to act like it doesn't happen??

I've had a similar unfortunate experience with the city. The lesson we learned the hard was is to pay your obligations especially taxes ON TIME because they do not mess around. Late is late, and I learned that the hard way. The rules should be the same for everyone and changing the rules for different businesses is just plain wrong. I hope that the city starts embracing our small business that give back so much to our city and community, instead of punishing the wrong people. I hate to see this happen to such a fabulous establishment.

AMEN! We all have to pay the piper! I mean it is not rocket science that it is good business to pay your taxes on time.

why does the city have 3 million in unpaid parking tickets? why don't they go rubber those people with the COPS who cheated on their test.

The hospitality tax is insane and unfair. The taxes are just passed on to us as consumers in order for the restaurant owners to be able to pay those taxes. Again, we all get screwed.

I think that what Ricky, from Mr. Friendly's, and other restaurant owners are going through is complete crap. The city imposes a new tax, adding yet another burden to small business owners, and then sends them a court notice AFTER they have paid a late fee. Why don't they go after the $3,000,000 in parking tickets? Because the city workers would have to get off of their fat behinds and work (and Bob Coble would have to miss his day job).

I think I have a solution to your problem. Pay your tax ON TIME and you won't have to put up with this!

i did pay it. and the late fee. now why aren't they honoring the 30 day late fee that is on the actual bill/payment receipt? have you ever received a summons to court for something being 14 days late in your life? no.
have you ever owned and operated restaurants? no.

i own Mr. Friendlys in Five Points and Solstice Kitchen in Northeast Columbia. For five years i have paid my taxes on time. my dec 07 tax was due on jan 20th of 08. and because we have business licenses due, insurance premium increases to meet, and various other once-a-year high bills to pay, i decided to wait a couple weeks to avoid any banking problems and pay my hosp tax late. and according to the bill that we receive, "if paid after the 21st day the penalty is 5% per month until paid in full". now tell me how you would interpret that?
The Restaurant business in columbia had it's worst year in 07 across the board. Fact. And the only reason i am jumping up and down about this is because ANY EXTRA TAX that my customers, or anyone else's have to pay when they go out to eat effects the economy. Five years ago you paid 5% tax on a bill at Mr. Friendly's (or any other City of Cola restaurant) now you pay 9%!! yes 9%! NYC pays 8.5%. come on...when are taxes going to stop???
or better yet...when are the folks who collect the tax, and all but ONE TIME in five years send it to the city on time, going to be able to see this money DO SOMETHING FOR US?
because it's not happening in Columbia.
Greenville it is. Charleston it is. Not here.

Let's see... The money has already been collected from the diners, so what's the problem with getting it paid? With the prices they charge, they can afford to pay it.

dear "opinions are like"...this matter is obviously too complicated for you to understand, but maybe thinking about it this way will help...
i could care less about my late fee, or my day in court on monday. what i care about is the fact that i would like to continue to contribute to the city of columbia for years to come and OUR CITY IS DOING NOTHING to help Columbia businesses where this tax is concerned. Don't believe me? ask ANY restaurateur in the city limits and they will laugh at this ridiculous tax. i promise. and if you were in the city limits, and you had a restaurant that you loved more than almost anything in your life, wouldn't you be a bit concerned that PEOPLE ARE EATING OUT LESS THAN EVER while taxes are going up and up and up?? that's what i have to worry about becaus I LOVE COLUMBIA. what i don't love is having to waste my time on an issue that should not exist in the first place. 1 day late, 7 days late, 29 days late...the city KNOWS they are going to get their money from me. They know where i am, they know who I am, yet instead of a phone call, or a FRIENDLY reminder about how i missed this ONE PAYMENT...i get to go to court.
I would defend ANYONE in a similar situation.
Will you??
